Joy just sent us a HUGE list of her favorites! She starts it off with her absolute top 5, and then gives us her favorites by category, and boy has she enjoyed the darker side over this last year!
If you’re in the mood for raw, gritty, dark and even… super-dark, Joy has some suggestions (and quite a few on here that I loved, too).
Joy’s Best of 2019
Hi Maryse!
I’ve lurked around your blog since 2016 and I absolutely love it! Whenever I see a post about a buddy read, I try to hop into read it too. I’m not into psych-thrillers and I know that those are your faves, so I skip over those.
I ventured to the dark side last year! I was lured in by the dark stuff!!! MC’s, Student/Teacher romances, Mafia, a bit of PNR, Captives and BDSM. I read many of the same books that were listed by others as their faves.
This time, I wanted to list books that I didn’t see on other lists, so that your followers can see other great books that may not have been very popular.
Thanks to everyone for sending you their lists because I read awesome books that I may never have known about.
My Top 5 (in order):
My husband saw my list for you and asked what my top 5 are. That was soooooo hard! I almost broke into a sweat, trying to pick the top 5, lol! I devoured just under 300 last year. I missed a lot of sleep, lol!
- The Life of Anna: The Complete Dark Story (Marissa Honeycutt),
- Dark Notes (Pam Godwin),
- The Nine Minutes Trilogy (Beth Flynn),
- The Reapers MC (Joanna Wylde), Perfect Strangers (J. T. Geissinger), Knight (The Unfinished Heroes Series Book 1): (Kristen Ashley) & The Italian by T. L. Swann are tied, and…
- The Original Sinners Series.
Books That Surprised Me:
Oh my jeebers, I only read happy ending books from 2016-2018. Reading was my escape and I only wanted love and happiness for the couples in the books I read.
I’d stalk your blog and found Dark Notes and Comfort Food in multiple lists, so I made a vow to read them and I’m so glad that I did. I came upon The Life of Anna and Her Master’s Courtesan, while searching for Comfort Food on Amazon. Each of those books, floored me! I cried, I was angry, I wanted to throw my IPad and I was hot and bothered at times.
Dark Notes was Las Vegas in July hot!
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed those types of books.
After reading those, I still wasn’t prepared for Søren, Nora and Kingsley! Sugar, Honey, Iced Tea! You can’t be faint of heart to read any of the books that I just mentioned. They will make you uncomfortable at the very least.
Tiffany Reisz took the psychology of sadomasochism, broke it down and wrapped it up in the painfully, emotionally broken, yet internally beautiful characters of Søren, Nora and Kingsley. The dominant, sadist priest (Søren) and the loves of his life! I never saw that trope coming. It’s an outstanding series! I’ve rambled enough for one post, lol.

Joy, what a list!! You must inhale books to be able to read 300.
Great list. I go thru phases where I read more MC books or mafia books and then get tired of those and go for Stephen king. Have you read the END OF INNOCENCE trilogy by Alessandra Torre? Think that would fit right in your niche. One of my favorites. Don’t wait till the end of the year to let us know about something good you are reading. I am always on the lookout to fill up my kindle more!
I haven’t read that trilogy! I’ll definitely let Maryse know of any good reads.
