Since it’s my birthday, I figured I’d celebrate with an old friend’s “favorite books” list, since she’s already been with me during an actual birthday or two. I have known Kira since I was 13 years old! We went from grade 8 to high school together (grade 10 or 11?), and she was one of my very best friends. We lost touch over the years, but fortunately, Facebook brought us back together again!
And I was thrilled!!! Because some of my most fun “growing memories” involve Kira.
Things I remember:
- She was always a brainiac. Straight A student/most likely to achieve type. I wouldn’t doubt it, if she was class valedictorian. Top of her class. Classy, fun, goofy, but a total “good girl” smarty-pants (she was kind of my hero…). <— OMG!! Update from Kira just a few seconds ago and she said:
“Ummm and I was valedictorian – But it was a vote – not based on marks…”
Ummm… yeah…. that’s even more awesome. By the way… I don’t doubt had it been based on grades, she would have been Valedictorian, anyway. 😉
-
She was a HUGE fan of Cowboy Junkies (I remember her singing “Sweet Jane” in the back of the bus…)
- She would help me study for tests on some mornings, in the back of that very bus.
- Now she’s a HUGE Dave Matthews fan!
- She also was constantly quoting “The Princess Bride”. She was HOOKED. And Kira… I still haven’t watched it. Eeeeeep!!
- She always had cool, trendy hair. Even when she got a perm once. She was not thrilled that first morning… but it ended up looking awesome on her once it relaxed…
- I think she played the clarinet. Or was it the flute? I played the Tuba, so I couldn’t see her past my huge instrument. LOL!! But she got me into “band” ’cause nobody chose the darn tuba, and they needed a tuba player. And heck, I’m game for anything! 😛
- She “trained” me to babysit! (I took over once or twice for her usual babysitting job).
- Her mom closed the mini-van door on my fingers once, but!!! It was a cool fancy new van with padding, though, so I didn’t feel a thing. In fact, I wriggled my fingers for her (while still enclosed in that door) to show her all was functioning! There was panic though. LOL!!! I think a few hearts stopped temporarily that day.
- She. Had. A. HOT. TUB. Well.. her parents did. But HOW COOL WERE THEY?!
- Oh! And when she’d sneeze, she’d look around and ask the closest person to her (usually me) “Did I get any on ya?” <— *snort* LOL!!!!!! 😛
Anyway, not only was I thrilled to reunite with Kira via our Facebook account, but to realize that she was “following me” because, she TOO was an avid reader. Oh… the reader part didn’t surprise me in the least. OF COURSE Kira was an avid reader. But to realize that she liked… what WE liked? Tee hee!!! I was tickled pink!!!
So what did she send over? Actually I was tagged in this a year or so ago (when I TAGGED her to list it), so perhaps she has new favorites, but this list is new-to-me gold!!!
“Quickly list my top 10 books…no particular order – and some (a lot of) cheating…here goes.”
- The Best Laid Plans (& anything else by Terry Fallis)
- Bonk: The Curious Coupling of Science and Sex (& anything else by Mary Roach)
- Anything by Martha Beck —- sensing a pattern here?
- Holidays on Ice – David Sedaris
- The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference – Malcom Gladwell
- Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling
- Scottish detective novels – Ian Rankin & Quintin Jardin
- High Fidelity – Nick Hornsby
- The Glass Castle: A Memoir – Jeanette Wallis
- anything & everything recommended by Maryse’s Book Blog <— HEY that’s me!!! 😀
This is great, not just for the recommendations, but the memories! She sounds like she was a great friend to have. 🙂 Totally agree with The Harry Potter series. The rest I haven’t read, though Best Laid Plans looks hilarious. 🙂
Wishing you a very Happy Birthday Maryse! Glad you found your childhood friend again. Awesome pic by the way!
You two look adorable. Great list! I should read a Hornby as usually a fan of the movie adaptations, lol. A Scottish detective, yes please. 🙂
Harry Potter is amazing. Me Talk Pretty One Day is probably my favorite of Sedaris that I’ve read. My favorite of his holiday stories is Six to Eight Black Men. You have to YouTube it to hear him read it live, the Carnegie Hall one. The Glass Castle was so good and moving.
LOL!!
As I was posting these books I was all… “er… I don’t know ANY of these!! *blush*” GAH!! Kira was always SO well read…
And of course this list.. right? LOL!
Okay.. yall are super cool with those comments.. but I am not…
CAN WE TALK ABOUT M’s HAIR??? LOL
Awww, I think the photo is the cutest ever.
As far as the list goes, I have to look them up in Amazon, but I don’t think I’ve read more than one or two. I’ll have lots for my favorites list. 🙂
No.
1. That’s just inviting karma to come bite you on the a$$.
2. I know how I looked at 13. Nuthin cute there.
Lol.

*sticks tongue out at Lee* 😛
Lee even made fun of me on Facebook! LOL!!!
Lee: OMG Maryse… I am so not LAUGHING OUT LOUD!!! humid that day…riiiiiiiiight!! *snort*
Maryse: LOL!!!! It was!!! Drizzling. Oh… right. HER hair looked good, and smooth didn’t it? *sigh* Well I tried. 😛
And P.S.
I wasn’t allowed to wear makeup yet. Mascara would have helped deflect from the hair. *snort* 😛
Hahahah Bev..
Hair Karma is not allowed to bite me because she owes me big time!!.. like seriously have you seen my hair?
just google – CURLY HAIR | The VandalList – the #3 picture.. that’s me .. EVERY.DAY!! No joke!

Happy birthday Maryse!! I’m a Leo too. This is great! Sweet Jane, Dave Matthews and High Fidelity, some of my faves as well

*sneaks out*
PS. Imagine it with someone white as paper, chinese eyes and black hair!
did you say yikes?? LOL!!
Um, Lee? That’s not yikes, that’s pure awesome. Can I ask what products you use on it? It must take a lot of TLC.
Some different books on her list- I haven’t read any of them, except of course for #10!!
I cannot say a word about the hair. Just suffice it to say if I only knew then what I know now about hair care products!! 😉
I’m the same! Moroccan oils, frizz ease, flat iron, s’more frizz ease, hats on days with greater than 1% humidity, wash my hair as infrequently as possible without offending people
I love the pic Maryse! Haven’t read any of these books…..gotta check them out!
Lee. I LOVE IT!!!
You two are THEE cutest thirteen year olds, EVER 🙂
Happy~Happy Birthday my bestie <3

Happy birthday, Maryse!!!!! 😀 You can eat cake to every meal today 😉 I love the picture. You ate such a sweetheart 🙂 Enjoy your day. *Hugs*

I haven’t read ANY from her list…not even the Harry Potter books. I know, I KNOW. But considering how smart she sounds, I don’t know if I could keep up with her books. 😛
That picture is absolutely adorable. You two look like what 13-year-olds *should* look like…sweet and innocent yet on the cusp of blossoming into young ladies. 😉
