Our wonderful Nay had a BIG year this year, some hurdles and some HUGE successes and we are SO happy to have her with us here every day. We LOVE YOU NAY!!!!
“Wow! What a year 2017 was! I had a bad thing that made it my worst year and I had a miraculous thing that made it one of my best years. So with all of the activity and the stress, I ended up falling into the biggest reading slump(s)
I’ve ever been in, totaling about 6 months of my precious reading year. And although many books sounded fantastic and many of my friends were buddy reading and gushing over them, I either couldn’t bring myself to pick up my Kindle and get started, or my concentration was so bad that I just couldn’t get into them, even though I wanted so badly to achieve the escape that can be found in a book.
With all of that, however, I did read enough to have 5 favorites, and I can attribute reading them, reading anything, to all my friends here.”
1.) Mists of The Serengeti by Leylah Attar <—What can I say about this phenomenal book that hasn’t already been said? It’s on so many of our ‘favorites’ lists, and it’s one of the most captivatingly beautiful books I’ve ever read. It didn’t just make me feel—it AFFECTED me. It brought feelings to the surface that I didn’t even know I had.
And Jack? Well, he was EVERYTHING! This was my first of several buddy reads of the year, and reading it and loving it with my friends here made it all the more special.
2.) The Gravity of Us by Brittainy Cherry <—This book made someone who doesn’t ordinarily enjoy the slow burn actually LOVE it.
As I said in my review, it’s a true slow-burn romance, something that’s usually not for me, yet because it’s so masterfully written with such meaningful thoughts and actions, it was impossible for me to stop reading until I reached the end. I don’t see how anyone could not love it! And I haven’t heard of many who don’t.
3.) Drive by Kate Stewart <—The angst, the tears, the extreme pretzel tummy, the romance, the ‘throw-your-Kindle-across-the-room’ type of emotions that we all love—this remarkable book has all of that and more. The fact that it’s written strictly from the heroine’s POV only adds to the emotional rollercoaster, and I think I was crying either from anger, sorrow, or joy through most of the book.
There is also a perfect playlist that affected me so much that when I go to see the Eagles in March, I’ll think of this book (and most likely cry) when Don Henley sings “Wasted Time’.
4.) Something in the Way series by Jessica Hawkins <— It’s difficult for me to choose which one of the three books should be in my top books of the year when it’s an epic saga spanning years that are covered in the three books, so I’m lumping the entire series together.
Lots of angst with characters and situations that drive you crazy in the most wonderful ways. I waited with bated breath for each book to be released and then I proceeded to inhale them!
5.) Waiting for the Sun by Robin Hill <—I got this one in at the end of the year, and I’m SO glad I did. This book is so smart, so sexy, so quirky in just the right places, so romantic, so angsty, so ALL of it!
I loved the characters, especially Darian, I loved the way it’s written, and the story kept my rapt attention from beginning to end. There are certain books that a reader just connects with from the very beginning and for me, this is one of them. And now I can’t wait for the next one!

I just burst into tears and my husband is freaking out. OMG. Nay! <3 <3 <3 This book wouldn't be what it is if it weren't for you! Thank you and I love you to pieces!
Nay, I hope this year brings you more great reads and continued good health. I’ve read 3 of your 5. It’s a HUGE given that I’m reading Waiting on the Sun on release day, but I feel like I should add Something in the Way to my tbr since I loved the other books you read too. 😉
well, well, well… I match 4/5 with you, my dear, sweet friend. I have not yet read Brittainy Cherry’s book…although it is on my TBR list. *huggles Nay!* Thank you for sharing your list with us …and for sharing…your…*you* with us. We love you!
Mists is the only one I haven’t read yet and I totally agree on the awesome-ness that is Waiting for the Sun. 😉
I, too, had a major slump this year, but I’m enjoying a lot of reads now!
I read Mists & Gravity and both were fantastic! Can’t wait to read Waiting for the Sun (on pre order). I’ve seen Driven on too many lists now, so…. need to download at least a sample!
Aaaand…. most importantly…. I wish you good health & continued strength this new year. You’re like a heroine in the books we love. You totally got this girl!
Nay, I am so happy that you are doing so well. So freaking brave.
I have read none of these, lol. I will blame it on my slump. I do have a couple that have been languishing in the tbr.
Love your list, Nay – and love you more! I’m so glad I found you here!!!! Here’s to great health, incredible happiness, and getting out of that dreaded book slump! I’ve had a great start Waiting for the Sun and now It Ends Wth Us!!!
You know when you have a nice piece of chocolate and want to save it for when you really need it. That is what I had been doing with the Mists of Serengeti. I bought it when it first come out and have held on to it. I started it and finished it last week. I have never been a highlighter of passages but my highlighter was on fire. I know this is a book that will stay with me.
I didn’t even realize this got put up!
Thanks for all your continued well wishes. Can you believe that I’m getting ready to set up my big 1-year appointment? I can’t!
I look forward to reading a lot more with y’all this year. Love all of you!!!
Robin–your book deserves it!
Cheryl–you have to try Something in the Way! Just remember it’s a slow burn–an epic saga spanning years in their lives.
Grey–you have to read Brittainy Cherry’s book! I never expected to love it as much as I did!
Leslie–I hope you at least give Mists a try and just try to see it’s beauty even if it doesn’t grab you.
Michelle–OMG yes! You MUST read Drive! A bunch of us read it and almost all of us LOVED it!
bev–Yes! Just blame it on the slump! lol
Kathy–Wasn’t it WONDERFUL?! I’ve never read a book like it!
Nay, I’ve read three out of five (I’ll get to Mist eventually!) Seriously, they were three of the better books that have been released, which really says I have to look at the other two. 😀
Nay! The only book I haven’t read is Something In the Way!!! I’m scared! And yes, whoever hasn’t read Mists or Gravity by this point, they need their head examined! Lol!
We should have a special celebration here on the release day of Robin’s book! Loved!!!!
Here’s to your health Nay! *cheers*
Being as though *everyone* loves Brittainy Cherry’s books I am going to have to buckle to peer pressure and read them… I am scared though… it’s like when I finally caved and read TJR… LOL, I’m a weirdo, I know. *tosses glitter*
Grey, if I loved all the Brittainy Cherry books, you definitely will!
