Our fellow reader Harper is in the mood for shifter books (she’s just started reading them) & she’s looking for a very specific feel.
While we already have a few favorite “shifters” and paranormal favorites lists on the blog, I thought perhaps we could come up with a special list just for her (and for others here that are in the mood for what she’s looking for, too).
P.S. You can scroll down past our conversation to see all of our recommendations.
Harper: I decided to give the shapeshifters a chance and I’m reading a few books of the genre for the first time (I read Twilight, of course, a long time ago). Any recommendations?
So far I read The Wildflower Series by Rachelle Mills, Becoming His by Albany Walker, Feral Sins by Suzanne Wright (tried the second book, but it was super tiresome) and now Im reading Bitten by Kelley Armstrong.
I read almost all of the shifter/paranormal romance genre recommendations the girls gave me and many others.
I liked Patricia Briggs but it’s a love triangle and it doesn’t have much of a romance. I was looking for something more steamy.
Of all of them, the best is The Wildflower Series. The first book is awesome (made me cry and had a really good romance story). The second is good too, but not as good. The third I DNF. The h was weak and the H clearly wasn’t into her.
I’m still looking for a favorite in the genre since none of them had everything I’m looking for (really good romance story, steamy, badass h, well written, original plot).”
Maryse: Okay what is (or… are) your absolute favorite books in the genre that did blow you away? I’ll include them in the examples of what we’re looking for (more like…. “this and this”)?
Harper: I started reading paranormal romances just two weeks ago, so I still don’t have an absolute favorite.
Mercy Thompson (Patricia Briggs) was a truly badass h and that’s what I loved about the first book. She didn’t need any men protecting her and was very smart and independent. I liked her story with Adam too, but there wasn’t much of a romance, only in the last couple of pages.Wildflower Series (Rachelle Mills) was really well written and the romance was truly believable. There was a lot of chemistry between the couple. The author took her time developing their story, so when it was time for the bonding and claiming part it made sense and truly moved us. You could feel the pain the h felt on the first book and how her character developed into a stronger and more confident woman.
I can’t say that I liked any other. The stories are always very similar. There is always a couple fighting for the pack (or the equivalent) and the H is trying to protect the h. They are both extremely powerful.
I guess I want to find a story where the focus is more on their relationship (like Wildflower). There can be some action too to enrich the story, but not the whole book. The steamy scenes have to be well written as well. There are so many books that they just put the sex scenes there for the sake of it, but they are just wasted because they fail to make you feel anything and don’t strengthen the bond between the couple.
I guess I want something between Clayton and Mercy Thompson with a bit more of a steam factor (like the menage scene in Feral Sins by Suzanne Wright).
DO YOU HAVE A RECOMMENDATION THAT MIGHT BE JUST WHAT SHE’S LOOKING FOR? 🤔
Lani Lynn: Just a side note but, Patricia Briggs’ Mercy Thompson series doesn’t stay a love triangle. It’s that for maybe a quarter of the book, but not even that. Check out Nalini Singh or Jeaniene Frost. Oh, and Patricia Briggs also has an Alpha and Omega series that has a more romance vibe to it. Charles is lovely.
Jan: I know what you’re saying about Mercy Thompson. It’s quite a long series and the romance element gets stronger (with Adam) in later books in the series. The romance is more up front in the Alpha and Omega series by Briggs. (Im in love with Charles). But yeah, Mercy Thomson is perhaps a little more urban fantasy rather than pnr.
Mony: I agree that the Mercy Thomson series is great. Finished book #5 and will be reading the next one soon. Adam, the H, is a great alpha in this slow burn series. He reminds me of Curran (also a fantastic alpha of his pack) in the Kate Daniels series. Both series are really good.
Harper: I saw on gd the sequels for Mercy Thompson and everyone agrees with you. I think I will keep reading it later. It was very well written and I’m not ready to give up on the series.
Melissa: Nalini Singh too!!
Kim: Nalini Singh’s Psy Changling series. Or Eve Cole’s series that’s coming out in August.
Nicola: Nalini Singh’s psy-changelings is my fave
Alison: Jeaniene Frost definitely
Angie: Jeaniene Frost – Night Huntress series! If you like vamps, you won’t be disappointed.
Elizabeth: one of my ultimate favorites
M.L. Gabrielle: Suzanne Wright’s Dark in You Series might be a good fit, but it’s not a shifter romance per se. There are some shifter demons in the story though – think hellcats & hellhounds. If you’re open to non-shifter romances, I have a bunch of recos. Happy reading!!
Harper: I read Burn already. After that, I tried Slave to Sensation (Psy-Changelings, Book 1) because everyone was saying it was similar but with a more well-developed story and it really was.
I think I’m being too judgmental, I don’t know. But they all are okays reads for me, but none of them I wish to continue with the series or read again in the future. That’s how I usually review all the books I read.
Christy: Wolf Tales series by Kate Douglas is exactly what she is describing!
Allison: I just finished Kate Douglas’s Wolf Tales’ Series I need something new and can’t figure where to go next….
Lori: Wolf Tales series by Kate Douglas. Its more Erotica though. Very good series.
Michele G: It’s not werewolves…but if you’re going paranormal, I really enjoyed the Dark Elements series by Jennifer L. Armentrout….gargoyles & demons primarily. Another series I enjoyed (shapeshifter-wise) is Dannika Dark’s Seven series. Also, I enjoyed the first couple of Hettie Ivers books in the Werelock Evolution series. Also, the It’s You duet by Katy Regnery (writing as K.P. Kelley) was really enjoyable.
Lori: Christine Feehan Dark Carpathian Series is awesome, Leopard series and The Ghost Walkers. Mac Flynn Werewolf Shifter (lots are on Unlimited) and Terry Bolryder an older series but really good.
Kristi: An oldie but goodie is The Demonica series by Larissa Ione. It was STEAMY. (Very explicit and not for faint of heart.) One character (I think book 2 is his book but he’s in each throughout series) is a shifter but all books in series I devoured in paperback years ago!!!
Maryse: I loved ALL of them too!
Mony: Just wondering if you had a chance to look at Dragon Bound…don’t let the poor book cover fool you…While not a series, an excellent read…writing is good, steamy, good story, bad ass H and h… 🙂 …my all time favourite book in this genre… I’m thinking it’s time to do a re-read. 🙂
Nancy: AND, of course, Kristen Ashley!!
Angie: …The Three series by Kristen Ashley (another favorite author). If you haven’t read this series I highly recommend it. The first one is about a vampire, the second book is about a werewolf, and the third is about a vampire/werewolf hybrid who all three together will save the world. 🌎
Carissa: I love Kristen Ashley Fantasyland series
Angie: I’m a huge Kristen Ashley fan. I think I’ll have to pick the book The Golden Dynasty (Fantasyland Series). It’s so wrong, but so right at the same time. I highly recommend this book if your looking for something to read.
Diana: I LOVED The Fantasyland and The Three series. LOVED.
Carrie: Rochelle Paige has a couple different shifter series, and she & Elle Christensen have a new shifter series as Fiona Davenport. They’re short & steamy, all alpha & all romance!
The Love at Stake series by Kerrelyn Sparks is about Vampires & Shifters. I second the Sherrilyn McQueen (Kenyon) rec – her Dark-Hunters & Weres are a forever favorite!
Lisa: Maybe I’m dating myself lol, but I loved Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark Hunters series, especially the old ones. Theyre so good! Sunshine and Talon are my favorite.
Carrie: 100% my favorite!!
Maryse: YESSSSS!! I LOVED Kerrelyn Sparks and Sherrilyn Kenyon LIKE CRAZY when I was strictly paranormal. Super-steam, and romance, and huge excitement in all of them at all times. Both series with very different feels (Kerrelyn’s has a lighter funnier side), while the Dark Hunters have depth and intensity but both VERY HOT and addictive.
Jolene: Alanea Alder’s Bewitched and Bewildered series is really good. Kim Harrison’s The Hallows series is also good, not really steamy per say but very well written
Virginia:
- Saranna DeWylde’s Woolven books
- Heather Long’s Wolves of Willow Bend
McKenzie: The Riley Jenson series by Keri Arthur was good.
Christina: New Species by Laurann Dohner
Michelle: the New Species books are sexy entertaining fun!
Lori: New Species… Love this series!
Kate: Elena Aitken’s Bears of Grizzly Ridge!
Nancy: Darkness series by Katie Reus is excellent.
Melissa: Rebecca Zanetti’s Dark Protectors
Jeannie: Dark Protectors series by Rebecca Zanetti… Very good series!!
Lisa: This is one of the best vampire books I’ve ever read, well, her and Tessa Dawn. Just phenomenal
Laura: Oh I really liked the dark protectors 1st book kind of had a psy/changeling feel to it even thought it’s vamps!!
Ann-Theres: T.J Klune; The Green Creek series. It’s M/M; but still one of the most beautiful books I’ve red. I re-read it a couple-three times a year still!
Teri: I just finished Wolfsong and I couldn’t go without posting something about it. What a brilliant book! I loved Klune’s BOTK series but This surpassed even that. It’s been a long time since a book wrenched such emotion out of me. I was pretty much crying from page one. Not because it was sad but because it was so spectacularly beautifully written. Sigh……
DG: Just to say – Wolfsong was a five star for me. Abso-freaking-lutely FLOVED it. Would have never even glanced at it if it wasn’t all the raving comments from you ladies.
Also «In this Iron Ground», by Marina Vivancos. Oh the feels…. I cried a lot during that one; though it is a kind of a happy book as well. Shifter book, m/m…. But the m/m is kind of in the background; the main theme is family; loneliness; an finding somewhere to belong. Oh; and wolves!
Nicole: To many to share
Alison: TS Joyce (all her series is in kindle unlimited and it all goes together definitely follow the reading order)
Kandi: Laurel K Hamilton, Kresley Cole, JR Ward is my fave!!
Olivia: Suzanne Wright’s The Phoenix Pack
Summer: Definitely Suzanne Wright.. cant recommend enough!!
Erica: I second Suzanne Wright’s Phoenix Pack. The first book is one of my favorite all time reads.
Maryse: YES!! She actually DID read that one, which prompted her asking us for more, last week. That’s an excellent recommendation.
Laura: Shelly Laurenstons The Pride Series also The Magnus Pack and the Honey Badger Trilogy love them all!!!
Autumn:
- Lora Leigh‘s Breed series is one,
- Lord’s of Deliverance series by Larissa Ione.
- Donna Grant‘s Dragon King’s series,
- Patricia Rasey Sons of Sangue but their vampire
Michele G: It’s not werewolves…but if you’re going paranormal, I really enjoyed the Dark Elements series by Jennifer L. Armentrout….gargoyles & demons primarily.
I enjoyed Bitten….but as I do with any long running series…I lost interest after a few books (it’s a me thing…short attention span). I think maybe I could go back to them now though….hope you enjoy!!
Another series I enjoyed (shapeshifter-wise) is Dannika Dark’s Seven series. Also, I enjoyed the first couple of Hettie Ivers books in the Werelock Evolution series.
Jennifer: Seven series by Danika Dark
Kristin: Every book by Dannika Dark
Jan: I also really liked the Seven series by Dannika Dark. And for sexy, spicy shifters, Cherise Sinclair’s Wild Hunt series is good, but, menage alert in case that’s not your thing. It’s not usually my thing either, actually, but I did like the first two books.
Kelly: The best is Charisse Sinclair Wild Hunt series. The first book is Hour of the Lion.
Doris: I loved this shifter series of all that I have read.
Jan: …Wild Hunt Legacy series. Well written shifter series, but somewhat *ahem* saucy if it’s anything like the others. I’m assuming it’s gonna be MMF like the other books. Not my usual reading matter, but I’ve liked this series…
bev: Well, if you want to try I am enjoying the Charlie Adhara Big Bad Wolf series. The first I think is on KU.
- Briggs doesn’t really go for steam, but many say that the spin off with Charles and Anna is much more romantic.
- Ilona Andrews tells great stories maybe not enough romance.
- Many of us cut our PNR teeth on Kenyon and Feehan. Both of their series became too long and jumped the 🦈 for me, but the beginning books are fun.
- If you like sort of slapstick humor Katie McAlister has a humorous take that is definitely inspired by Feehan’s world.
- Oh, and of course their is Nalini Singh’s series. She has a changeling one and an Archangel one.
- And Kresley Cole has a hugely popular series.
bev: Darn. There was a recent one that many enjoyed that was reminiscent of Twilight, but I can’t remember what it was.
Harper: Bev, the book you were trying to remember is the Wildflower Series by Rachelle Mills. And the changeling one is Slave to Sensation. I also read a hunger like no other by Kresley Cole.
I’ll try these new ones you guys recommended. Thank you for the patience. I love how you all know so many books and the kindness you show everyone here.
bev: It is a different one. This one: Crave (Crave Series Book 1) by Tracy Wolff
Harper: Wow it does look a lot like twilight! After I saw it all goes down in Alaska it was on. hahaha I’ll add it to my list today
Harper: Bev, I was looking for this book you recommended and found The Coldest Girl in Coldtown by Holly Black. It’s a YA, so there are no steamy scenes, but it was soooooo perfect! The character development is off the charts and the whole story is beautifully written. I loved it so much!!! Now, I’ll start Crave .
Natalie: I just added 5 books to my TBR list!!!
Looking for more? Check out all of the blog posts on my blog that have been tagged “Shifters“ (all sorts of shifters!! From reviews, recommendations, series reading orders, reader questions, they are all here. 😀
I am very picky about shifter books, most are way too short or not angsty enough (zero conflict). But I absolutely love Beneath the Blue Moon by Alana Sapphire. She usually writes MC books but wrote a couple of shifter stories that blew me away!
Lacey Thorn Awakening Pride Books.
WOWWW! So many amazing recommendations! Thank you all for sharing your favorites with me. I`ll be reading as much as I can this weekend =)
