The Thinnest Air
<— Oh boy how I DO enjoy this author’s twisted, psychological thrilling mind. π And I especially love how I can never guess right when it comes to her stories. It was my Kindle First choice this month, so it’s not “officially released”, but if you have Amazon Prime, you can select this one, if you haven’t already!
Maryse: I needed another psych-thriller and devoured this one in pretty much 24 hours: βThe Thinnest Airβ by Minka Kent and yep!! It got me. LOL. I really couldnβt put it down. Not the craziest most shocking-exciting book ever, but had me guessing right to the end.
Tee hee!!! And then there was a twist thrown in and I was allβ¦
WHATTTTT???? And my blood ran cold.Β
I love when my blood runs cold with realization. π Er… IN BOOKS. ONLY IN BOOKS!!!!!! *blink blink*
Another one that kept me guessing to the end. I had my sights set on one – was just trying to figure out THAT particular twist – but a monkey wrench came flying into the mix and I was all… WHAAAAAAAAA??? I didn’t even see it coming!!!! And then I was dead set on that one! Was I right? Was I wrong? Heck… I couldn’t keep myself aligned long enough to be sure of any of my guesses and suspicions, but either way, my lips are sealed.
Everyone was suspect. Even her.
Her? The one that went missing without a trace? The… possible… victim? Oh yes. She was young, in love, idealistic and full of hope. But as many new adults experience, life sometimes throws a whirlwind of surprises and disappointments their way. Her eyes were suddenly open, and her thoughts, and heart, a mangled mess.
So what’s it about? Beautiful, young and idealistic Meredith meets the man of her dreams. Handsome, successful, wealthy, and sure… twice her age, but she is so in love with him… and he is just as in love with her.
I love him. I love him a million times more than I ever thought I could possibly love another human being, and I donβt expect anyone to understand, least of all my sister. Greer is convinced weβve got some sugar daddy arrangement, that itβs all for money and show, but she couldnβt be more wrong.
Deeply connected, pronouncing forever to each other,
Heβs my addiction, one I fully embrace with eyes wide shut because when you love someone, you trust the process. You fall hard. And you donβt look back. Thatβs what makes it so intense, so magical.
…he makes her his wife. And their perfect life begins.
But eventually, Meredith’s rose-colored glasses are ripped from her eyes, as personalities and expectations clash.
Iβm speechless. Officially speechless. Staring at the man I married, the man I envisioned spending the rest of my life withβbaby carriage, picket fence, and allβand I donβt recognize him.
He may as well be a stranger.
A seething, red-faced stranger.
Iβve never seen that look on his face before: pure, unadulterated rage.
Heβs looking at me as if Iβve just betrayed him…
Distraught and suspicious… Meredith takes a deeper look with her inexperienced eyes and heart. But Meredith also has her own personal issues to contend with, and well… that’s a whole other discussion.
And then she goes missing. Her car, her purse, her phone… left untouched in a public parking lot. Her step-children stranded as they wait for her to pick them up… but Meredith is… gone.
βShe was supposed to pick up Andrewβs kids from school,β I say, gaze focused on his bare feet. βNever showed. Her car was found in the parking lot of a grocery store, the driverβs door open and her purse and phone on the passenger seat. No sign of a struggle. She just .Β .Β . disappeared.β
And so the wild ride begins. A look from past to present… her life as it unfolded within her “perfect/not-so-perfect marriage” to the current investigation that goes national, as all those close to her try and find her (while all of them are scrutinized). Especially by the reader. π Oh yes. I guessed and I guessed and I guessed. Everyone is a person of interest.
Every part of me is screaming, No, no, no. This is a bad idea. Donβt do it. Donβt go down this path.
But thereβs something about human nature that makes us shameless opportunists. We stumble across a chance, experience the tiniest taste of something we want, and we canβt say no.
You’ll be surprised how far in, this one reaches.
Sometimes love is wonderful.
Other times itβs poison.
4 to 4.5 STARS <— I’m vacillating. It kept me guessing to the very end, and threw in an extra exciting surprise that had me gasping (THAT is why I’m at the 4.5 star level). If not for that extra, unexpected *oomph* that had my blood running cold, I was going to give it 4 stars because there were a few “character” holes and events left somewhat… unfinished. Reveals that I feel were for the sole purpose of intensifying our suspicions and upset, but I’m still wondering about them, now.
That said, the characters were all incredibly flawed, most even somewhat… unlikeable, but human and relatable. Mistakes and all. All had plenty of good… and bad.
P.S. I’ll think about it a bit more. π
This is no award winning book and if you read the author’s bio, she is bascially know for book sales (not awards). So bascially it’s like going to a blockbuster film that has a huge box office but will never be nominated for Oscar. It read to me like a romance novel, middle school writing level, just not interesting. While not completely predictable, you know how things will end.
