This book is a standalone but has TWO “extras” for those that desperately need more, so here’s the series reading order.
- THERAPY by Kathryn Perez<— Freebie of the week!!! And one of my BFF’s absolute favorite books!
- Clear by Jessica Park <— ONE OF MY FAVORITE AUTHORS ALERT! and one of her books is on super-sale today!! Seriously… it’s a standalone and sounds INTENSE! College student starting over and reconnecting with someone from her past: “Stella is determined to heal them both. Healing, however, is a challenge when the walls of her everyday existence collapse. And when Sam’s best friend is his worst enemy. When the line between life and death blurs.” ON SUPERSALE today (it’s a Kindle Daily Countdown deal).
- Heated Ride: Hellions Motorcycle Club (The Hellions Ride Series Book 7) by Chelsea Camaron <— BIKER BOOK ALERT! Vicki loved this one! “I don’t know if you are interested in a book that I recently read that I really loved. But will throw it out there in case. I just read Heated Ride by Chelsea Camaron and loved it. It is a story of a married couple who lose their passion. Although Ms. Camaron usually writes MC romances, this one has MC characters, but it is really more about a marriage and coming to their HEA in their marriage.”
- Night Owl (The Night Owl Trilogy Book 1) by M. Pierce <— ANOTHER ONE OF MY ALL-TIME FAVORITES is on sale today! And this is where “Manny the stuffed manatee” comes from (the one our reading crew virtually “shares” when we need to cry while reading a book – he’s been snuffled on a few too many times. His nap needs a good brushing). LOL!!!! Anyway… it’s about a moody, brooding author, and the “anonymous” woman he’s writing a book with. SO SO SOOOOOOOO GOOD!!! READ THIS!
- Commodity by Shay Savage <— SHAY SAVAGE ALERT – WOMEN ARE NOW A FORM OF CURRENCY!! *GASP*! Nancy found this one on super-sale today (Kindle Countdown deal!!) I’m thrilled with that, and what’s fun is you can flip flop from reading it, to listening to it without losing your spot… This thing is so cool (Amazon calls it “Matchmaker“)! It’s an Amazon feature, that scans your Kindle books and will list all of the ones you have that are also available as an audiobook at a discounted price (not normal audiobook prices). This way, you can switch back and forth, seamlessly between your ebooks and your audiobooks. VERY COOL! (This is the “Whispersync” thingie).
- Naked in Death: In Death, Book 1 by J.D. Robb <— CHUCK has a few recommendations for us audio-book listeners! He says: “Just want to chime in with a male perspective. I love this series and have collected audio versions (CD) thru “Concealed in Death: In Death Series, Book 38” and will soon be adding the rest. I got hooked listening to one mid series (Fantasy in Death: In Death, Book 30) and started purchasing the whole series to be able to work from #1 (Naked in Death) thru… whatever. Have listened to the first 45 once and working through a second time (it takes a while). If you are just getting started at collecting, do remember that most sources list them in a “Romance” category rather than “Crime/Detective Fiction. For those of us preferring or needing audio book, Susan Ericksen is a fantastic reader – actually, performer – who brings the character alive, right down to the most minor or incidental ones.“”

Ooo craving molly!! I love the craving series and these new ones she’s doing about the younger generation mc, I just finished the whole imp series!! It was so amazing I really loved it and the 1st book is still free on the kindle store!
Laura I loved the first book in the Craving series!! I need to continue these.
I saw quite a few here LOVING the Imp series as well! I’m so excited for these new “tried-and-true” recommendations. 😀
Craving resurrection the 3rd book in the series is amazing its my favourite so far but they are all really good! The imp was so funny but I just check its back up in price again 🙁 I also just read pucked as well it was funny! I’m also kind of liking the look of preschooled? What are u reading just now maryse?
Laura, I just finished Baller (good and funny, and a bit angsty – I’ll be reviewing tonight) and next…. I have no idea.
I’m thinking I want a psych thriller… But I DO want to check out that new series (January girl)?
Gah, woman!! Are you EVER going to read Therapy?!? Not only is it your BFF’s favorite, but now *I* am going to put all kinds of book peer pressure on you until you read it. Room 212, Written in Red…*pffftttt* the pressure put on you to read those is NOTHIN’ compared to the pressure you’re going to get to read Therapy. Why? *shrugs* I dunno…it just sounds like something to do. 😛 *throws Therapy peanut at Maryse* And so it begins…
Ooh! I clicked Preschooled a couple of days ago when it showed up in one of my Bookbub emails (that is a GREAT email subscription, by the way), and I was debating between that and The Score for my 2016 read. I know, I KNOW…The Score is crazy awesome amazing, but after Groupie I need to catch my breath a bit. I loved Big Little Lies, and I’m thinking Preschooled might have a similar feel…has anyone read it?
Soooo, I knew Jessica Park (Clear, listed above) wrote a book with Drowning in the title and I wanted to see if it was Drowning Instinct, so I looked up DI and *gasp* I had to share this ’cause I’m in between books and bored right now so I’m gonna nag y’all. But not Maryse because she’s already read DI so I’m nagging her about Therapy.
ANY-ways, look at the books I found listed under “customers who bought this also bought…”: The Man I Love, F*ck Love, Badger, Deeper, The Paper Swan, Every Wrong Reason, The Mason List, Rainfall, Room 212, Jezebel, 5 Stages of Falling in Love, Hollywood Dirt, 53 Letters For My Lover, Rush, Tight, Pure Abandon, The Tied Man, Bright Side, Marrow, Forbidden, Kulti, Wild Reckless…the list goes on but do y’all see a pattern?!? SO many of us loved SO many of those books, and that should tell you right there that you need to read Drowning Instinct. Ignore the price, just read it. Come on, it’s under $9 so it’s NOT that bad. SPLURGE A LITTLE!!!!! 😉
OMG Amazon just listed our ENTIRE list, Amy… it’s stalking us. 😛
I’m at 95% of Kulti… so I need a rec as well…
I want something super scary or mind-f**kry… I need a thrill.
Amy, The Score is light read if that’s what you’re looking for.
I looked up Drowning Instinct because I thought it sounded familiar. The first thing I saw in the blurb is: “There are stories where the girl gets her prince, and they live happily ever after. (This is not one of those stories.) ”
ummmmmm
Grey…Drowning Instinct. Or Therapy. DI will work you over in the best way (SO emotional and real and raw by the end) and Therapy will make you feel just about every book emotion possible. Can’t go wrong with either!
Fabi…*giggle*…why do you think I loved it? 😉
Maryse, right?? I kept scrolling and couldn’t believe how many of them were “our” books from here that have gotten so much love from so many of us!
Hmmmm, something scary…I came across this on a sale list a few days ago and it might be worth a shot:
https://www.amazon.com/Bell-Witch-John-F-D-Taff-ebook/dp/B00ED5QAZW/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1454110709&sr=1-1&keywords=the+bell+witch
* holding head down in shame * I just cannot get into The Man I Love. I’m barely in (5%) and, nothing. Tell me I am just being – insert adjective here – cause I feel like I am just disappointing myself. It picks up?
Im confused. The only book I could find by Jessica Park was the Left Drowning series…..or are you all talking about Drowning Instinct by Ilsa Bick??
Who’s reading Captive Prince 3 on Tuesday? Me, me me! Also excited about Morning Star and Glass Sword on the 9th.
So far Chicagoland Vampires series, I had to go back and reread some, but it’s really good and I can’t remember why I stopped reading. I might just stick with it until Tuesday.
I have to put this here. Just look at his face. His little sloth face.
https://smexybooks.com/2016/01/smexys-top-ten-january-29th.html
Whoops Lisa, I wasn’t very clear on that, was I? Drowning Instinct is by Ilsa Bick, and Left Drowning is by Jessica Park. Drowning Instinct is the one I’m pushing right now. *throws DI peanut at Lisa*
Sharon…it does pick up so try and stick with it. 😉
Oh wait…*throws handful of Jellicoe Road peanuts at Maryse* I forgot she still has to finish that one. 😛
Well… I finished book 1 of the Consequences series today and about 13% into the second one. There are really no words. At the end of #1 I sat silent for about five minutes. No tears, but a damn good thirst for vengeance! When I finally spoke my words were… “that son of a b#$tch!!!” This book was a slow burn for me, meaning I weaved in and out of the story. It was very detailed, too much at times, but in the end it made perfect sense and Wow! It kind of remained me of the Twisted series by Anna Zaires, minus the deviance factor. Indebted was sadistic, Consequences is psychotic. Claire is the poster child for Stockholm and battered women’s syndrome. I wouldn’t say it’s darker than Indebted, but it resides in the same realm. Indebted screwed with my mind because the sadism was upfront, with Consequences it screwed with me because I had no idea how it’s going to turn out. You know something is coming. You can feel it. Your tummy is twisting. You’re holding on tight to Manny. You’re biting your fingernails. I was shocked, floored, left completely and utterly speechless! Then I was spewing all sorts of sordid four letter words! I’ve never been so twistedover a guy in a story like I was Anthony Rawlings. Honestly guys, by about 50% into book #1, my attention was waning, but I stuck it out because I knew it was going to turn and boy did it ever! The end justified the entire story and I’m jumping head first into book #2. This book didn’t just mess with my mind, it beat it up and spit it out for breakfast! Holy hell!!
Michelle, I don’t have an opinion on those books as I know nothing about them but I can offer you a hug? Oh hush. I’m hormonal and emotional right now. Deal with it.
OMG Bev, I saw that on the news the other day…how freaking sweet was that?!? Sloth related…have you seen this preview? I saw it when we went to watch Star Wars, and I seriously snorted at least three times and embarrassed hubby:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=k3A_pzCUwRA
I know I’m very wordy on here sometimes. I just wish we could all get together over coffee, wine, cocktails, etc. and talk these books out. I’m feeling really needy after this one! So many emotions!
Cristina…that’s what we’re all here for! 😀 Talk it out all you want…I haven’t read those books, but I know others on here have and can sympathize with you.
Speaking of dark books…there is one I wanted to get but I’m not sure if I ever did, and I can’t remember the exact title. It’s something like Under [some kind of] Sky, and she is taken to a ranch supposedly to be his wife but he has darker plans that involve the ranch hands. Anyone know which one I’m talking about?
Amy, going WiR level on Maryse? Ooooo.
Nice Jellicoe mention. 😛
I feel like I should take a break from the peanut gallery, lol.
That movie looks great. Love a good cartoon.
Maryse, not sure if it fits or not. But I have had An Untamed State by Roxane Gay in my tbr for forever. Got all the buzz couple years ago.
Sharon… it took me awhile too. In fact, my first review says this. I wasn’t “in-in” for awhile. Then… OMG I WAS IN.
Amy the Bell Witch actually sounds pretty darn amazing!!!!!!! Sample time…
Oh never mind… it’s that bargain-priced??!! ONE-CLICK time. 😀
Y’all are making me want to play ad libs.
Amy, quick name 3 body parts & a verb.
Yeah… you guys. That’s exactly what I’ll do. Go back to Jellicoe Road.
I’m on it!!!
okay bev I’m looking that one up right now…
Sounds awesome too… downloaded the sample!
But I think it’s time to venture back to Jellicoe Road…
*rubs hands together*
Ooooh, this is gonna be fun! Let’s see…how about earlobe, neck and coc…
…cyx. Coccyx. *snort* What did you think I was going to say? 😛
Okay, seriously though we’ll go with earlobe, neck and hip, and for a verb we’ll go with startle.
More silly than good.
I never slept on my earlobe. I startled when I slept on my earlobe. Women didn’t startle. I knew this wasn’t a reality; women startled. But for me, as a woman, I was not going to be a woman who startled. So, although I used to sleep on my earlobe all the time, I trained myself to sleep on my neck or hip so I wouldn’t startle.
I just randomly took a paragraph from KA’s The Promise.
Maybe should of picked a *cough cough* scene.;-)
Maryse, excited you want to go back to it. I hope it works for you but please only keep on keeping on if you are enjoying it.
*snort* THAT could get really fun! 😛
Michelle, I’ll be BReading the last Prince book with y’all. I can’t resist a BR even though I’m growing in “this is next” for Feb.
You guys that liked Captive Prince should try Measure of Devotion. It’s different but similar. If you know what I mean. Like CP, each book gets better and better.
Ok, back to reading for me. Gah! I need to read nonstop for the entire weekend.
*growing? What?! it was supposed to be *drowning
Amy *catches peanuts with one hand while one clicking Drowning Instinct with other*…Ive just started the Dartmoor series (and loving it) so I’ll get to this one in a few books time.
Bev, forget the sloth face…look at that HOT vet! I would get nothing done all day if I worked with that so maybe it’s for the best *sigh*
Yey BR of Captive Prince 😀
How much do you think that turtle weighs?
Hey, have you ever met a sloth?
A Sloth Named Velcro (PBS…..Bev this might be your “fix” or “cure” for
Slothness…..like most babies are way cuter!
Still deep in the world of Indebted….I think I am numb like ICE. My feelings have shut down with this series. Is it strange that I am resigned to the insanity of what the Hawks think? Not surprised…nope….not me. Right at the end of book 4… Happiness …yeah it’s an illusion for these guys….*shakes head sadly* I KNOW its coming. Again, I WILL finish this series this weekend *stomping foot*. I will not dream of happy, giggly, light reads until this is done…. And when it’s done, I am diving into the best light read I can one-click!!! * bahhhhaaaa trying but failing on evilish laugh due to my pink unicorn socks*
Um, did you ladies click on the link for the article on the hot vet?
https://www.buzzfeed.com/juliareinstein/honestly-this-vet-is-just-ridiculously-hot#.jwQROqLEE
*thunk*
I’m picturing him as the vet guy from Undeniably You right now.
Damn if I can remember that character’s name though. Freaking pictures of Mr. Hot Vet fried my brain.
Hmmm. Drowning instinct. Jellicoe road. Captive prince. Dartmoor. Therapy… I haven’t read any of them. Gah!
Wtf, I’m in a rut! Idk what my problem is… I have read a bunch of really good books this month, I mean they’ve been good books, don’t get me wrong… But not…knock me out of my chair great, ya know? I feel like such a spoiled brat right now. I want to smack myself.
Amy, he is seriously hot. But I got to admit some of those pics look like they could be from Zoolander.
Time to pick my next read.
Cristina, Consequences, oh girl… Hang on, its gonna get even more crazy!
DG, Indebted, I felt the same. I actually thought book 4 the Third debt was the best book of the whole series… But then it became like a J.O.B. to get thru the rest of them. I feel your pain LOL!
Amy, coccyx… No *giggle* try again…
Mad libs with the wolf pack/bridesmaids gang… This could be fun…or illegal in 12 countries and liable to get you on an FBI watch list *snort*
Grey…join me on the Dartmoor journey. The writing is superb…so detailed with lots of reflection to past events…you get sooo invested in the characters. There is POV from three characters but its really the h’s story and mostly her POV. Plus there is about 6 books out so no fear of unresolved CHs. I think each book is about a different character within the club. PLUS there is an actual STORY. Feels like SoA but with a heart and less club ho’s! And can I say again…the writing is above par.
Whoa… That hot vet…I am pretty sure I just got pregnant. That might be a tad difficult to explain, so thanks Amy. *fans self*
Bev…Zoolander *snickers*. Ben Stiller was on the Sydney Harbour bridge this week in Derek Zoolander character Blue Steel posing.
My ovaries just exploded with that vet!! So HOT!!!
I am so in a BR for CP #3! I can’t believe its almost here!!
Fabi need to check out Measure of Devotion. It sounds pretty intense.
“I am pretty sure I just got pregnant.” <——- LOL!!!! But hey, Bev is the one who put Zoolander in our heads so if you end up with the baby at the end of the Zoolander movie then that is on her. *cackles*
Lisa, I can't wait to hear what you think of Drowning Instinct. By the way…
https://www.maryse.net/books/book-review-drowning-instinct-by.html
Ummm, my dog wants him for her Vet *blink, blink*
Omigod the pictures with the grey kitties which are my favorite…ovary explosion! I saved the link and have got to show it to the ladies at work tomorrow hehe
Grey, I’m in a book funk too, although I’ve been spoiled with recent really good reads and now I read the blurbs and meh, not doing it for me.
Maryse, it looks like The Perfect Life is now February 18th. Bummer, that blurb looks good of course. 🙁
Sharon, agreed stick with it. I read all 3 and not my usual too wordy book but it does make sense why all the details are necessary as you go.
And here I sit holding a rasberry martini wearing striped socks, a PJ t-shirt with at least 3 stains on it (including one from said martini), flannel pink plaid PJ bottoms and fluffy robe with my reading glasses on, no makeup, and my greasy hair in a top knot while I drool over pics of a young, hot vet.
I *AM* the epitome of a home-bound, middle-aged wife in the throes of her period.
I am. *nods head*
You guys!! Therapy. Therapy. THERAPY!!!!!! It’s on sale so just go click it and read it and get out of your book funks already. GAH!!!
There is just something about a hot guy who cares for animals. Just ups the hottness status for me.
hahaha Amy. You sound comfy and snuggly.
Bev and Amy both, thank you for those pictures. They sure put a happy on a crappy day.
Therapy will be next Amy… But… I started, Until You ( Fall Away #2) by Penelope Douglas, it’s Jared’s side to Bully, which was mainly Tate’s… Ooomph the feels!
Aw Fabi, I’m sorry you had a crappy day. 🙁
Hugs? *opens arms*
Oh! Correction! Therapy is FREE. 😀
*snuggles back into Amy’s arms —— and gulps a handy Raspberry Martini*
🙂
Free Therapy? Oh, I could use some of that. lol
Huggles and Manny snuggles and extra martinis for Fabi!
OMG!!! Free therapy…I didn’t even catch that, LOL!!!!
Amy, way up this thread you asked about a dark book and a girl who goes to a ranch … I think it might be by Skye Warren . I have it but I can’t remember the name of it ? Big Sky Country ? Sorry, I searched my 100’s & 100’s of books and can’t remember what the cover looked like . Hope someone else can remember the name … It has a milking machine part
We’ve all been reading like crazy and landing on some awesome books already this year. So here’s a question for everyone.
What was your favorite January read?
I’ve read 18 books this month. (well I’m finishing #18 this weekend). Many of them were 5* reads for me. But my first place winner is *drumroll*
To Love Jason Thorn by Ella Maise – an NA with loads of steam and sweet and cute
tied for first place is
The Last Hour of Gann by R. Lee Smith – a sci fi fantasy with enough world building, angst and character development to keep me glued the entire book
and third at the top of the pile is
Nowhere Ranch by Heidi Cullinan – an mm BDSM erotica romance with so much heart mine clenched and enough steam to curl the virtual pages on my Kindle.
How’s that for diversity ladies? You can’t say I’m not an equal opportunity reader. 😉
Fabi, 11 (so far) for me.
Dancing on Coals & my re-reads of Captive Prince.
The rest were mostly good but didn’t blow me away. Even The Score.
Bev, is it by Ellen O’Connell?
Yeah I’ve read 26 this month and Dancing on Coals and Rush were my only 5* reads. I’ve had a lot of meh reads. The Imp series, The Mistake, The Score and Captive Prince 2 were all 4* though.
Y’all are gonna have to tell me the authors so I can find the right books. It’s amazing how many books have the same title.
Fabi Im on 17 books, reading 18 now but its a monster (32 hours kindle tells me).
My 5 stars were:
The Play Karina Halle, Blur & Forget NA Alcorn and Written in Red.
Lots of 4 stars like:
The Offer, The Baller, The Score, Built & To Love Jason Thorn.
Thanx Amy…Grabbed Therapy….got knows I need it 😉
Hope youre feeling 100% soon.
Michelle!!! 26 freaking books! Speed reading!
I’ve read 20 books this month and my favorite was Waiting for Wyatt by S.D.Hendrickson, followed by The Score.
Geez, I have lost count as to the number I’ve read this month….ashamed to admit but I average a book a day *ducking head down*.
Favs so far….Dirty Ugly Toy, Sebring, The Score, Appealed and The Baller.
I have read 16 so far, I plan to read 2 more this weekend. I have had ZERO 5 star reads this month *pout* I’ve had (3) 4.5 star reads, Bully by Penelope Douglas, Embraced (Life of Anna book 3) by Marissa Honeycutt and Cunning by Aleatha Romig, pretty much all of the rest I’ve read have been solid 4’s, The Score, The Baller, Kulti, Masked Innocence, Big Rock…
Right now, like I said ^ up there… I am reading Until You, which is Jared’s follow up to Bully… omg… the feels… it is KILLING ME!!! I actually am loving it. It may have been just the push I needed to get me out of this blasted book rut I’ve been in!
Thank you Amy for the freebie Therapy, I snatched that sucker right up!
Yes that’s the author. I just write down the titles I read not the authors.
Think I’m going to read Keep Dancing by Leslie Wells. It is the follow up to Come Dancing. If any one wants a good rock star romance, her pov, great sense of time & place and slightly different I’d rec Come Dancing. No CH. This is the same couple but the 1st book does have an end.
Missed so much… let’s see…
1.) That vet is super hot. I may use him as the inspiration for a few characters just to honor his service to the world’s animals (***snicker***)
2.) Bev…. calling Bev….. yoohoo….. I have your next read. Seriously. You know how I wanted a “Simon vs HSA” type feel? Well this it it. times 100. Which leads me to my next subject, my top reads for January starts with this one….
3.) Top January reads: No Not Why, by H. Johnson. Laugh out loud, so smart and funny and sweet. He’s 22, takes a job at a Hobby store to meet chicks. Struggling with his weird attraction to the owner, a 25 year old man, not a chick at all. I love this book. BEV….. must. read. now.
No Not Why, Captive Prince 1 and 2, The Score, Shadow and Bone, Siege and Storm
I only read 11 books in January. That’s how little I’ve been able to read lately. I feel like I am falling behind. 🙁
4.) Yes, definitely reading Captive Prince #3. I’m all in now.
Gutted. I am gutted over this line.
“I didn’t forget to breathe. I just didn’t want to anymore.”
*dead* oh the pretzel tummy angst feels of Jared and Tate. I need Manny and wine stat!
*pours a glass of wine for Grey* Here you go. That was one of the best reverse POV I ever read. Almost all of it is different scenes. Only the important moments are repeated. It gutted me.
I’ve read 29 books so far this month. Of them, NA Alcorn’s Blur is probably number one. I love my rockstars, but that one was pure, believable rock life. The first one was really good, but more of a set up for the second.
Second place would go to The Dirt on Ninth Grave by Darynda Jones. Ir was the perfect follow up to the eighth book and gut wrrenching moments that hurt ONLY if you read the eighth book. 🙂
That vet. Wow. I believe it when they said he was a model. Let’s really just stare and think about how smart he is too with all those looks. *swoon*
MichelleS, I’m not finding it on kindle?
It would have to be after CP. I’m doing 3 old books to every 1 (sometimes 2) new books. Feels good to get through my tbr. Sebring was new to me so starting over on the 3 from my tbr.
Hi guys! Been such a busy week, including cleanup at our shore house! Just catching up on all the comments!
Best book I’ve read this year, The Law of Moses! So great! Can’t stop thinking about it weeks later! Also, special shout out to Jellicoe Road and I’m reading Rachel’s Peril trilogy right now which is AMAZING! It is the spinoff to The Thompson Sister series which I read a long time ago by Charles Sheehan-Miles. Non-stop action and all of the sisters are throughout the entire series. What a tangled web!
Oh and I got Therapy, of course! Didn’t want to deal with the wrath of Amy!
MichelleS I can’t find the No Not Why by H. Johnson on Amazon or GR. Help! Lol
Ditto. MichelleS quit being such a tease. hahaha
Keep those Jan favs coming ladies. I’m taking notes. I’m debating between a spreadsheet and a GR book category. It’ll be Maryse’s Blog Buddies Jan ’16 favorites. I know Maryse has at least one five star this month, I have to go look if there’s more. Unless Maryse wants to create the list. 😉 Then I’ll just bookmark it. lol No, I’m not putting more work on you Maryse. You know me and my ideas, they never stop.
Jean, was the damage horrible at your shore house? *hugs* That’s awful you have to deal with that.
UGH, after a massive clean-up/re-do of my kindle app on laptop- DON”T ask amazon for support- let’s just say had to do some major damage control after getting their “help”. Didn’t think that’s how I would be spending my saturday!
So far I have read 17 books and 5* reads would be Blur/Forget and The Score.
Yeh, MichelleS teasing us with a made up title/author!! 😉
Jean-how’s your shore house?
Is it Blur by Steven James or Blur by Kristin Middleton?
Amy & Jean…..it looks like Jellicoe Road has been paved over. Maryse is taking a new road a Low road.
Jean I hope the damage was minimal.
And I found it. First 5 star read of the year! Until You by Penelope Douglas. I absolutely loved it!!!
I really liked Bully…but getting Jared’s take on it was even better!! I’m gonna read Madoc’s story Rival now.
We were lucky and didn’t get water in the main part of the house, but the porch and sun patio which were both carpeted got water. It is messy! Could have been worse though..some houses lost everything and it’s all on the curb!
Fabi- it’s Blur & Forget by N.A. Alcorn. 🙂
Maryse, you were looking for a thriller and this one just came across my email. I’m not a huge fan of thrillers, but sometimes one catches my eye.
Miracle Man by William R. Leibowitz
Eep! I’m just glad that you didn’t have to much damage in the end. It sounds like it could have been major.
Fabi, Blur/ Forget is by NA Alcorn. Forget is the first book. 😀 I think it was Lisa who first recommended it? *goes off to search*
LOL. It’s KNOW Not Why, by Hannah Johnson.
Cracks me up. “And it’s not like she looks appalling without it or anything, but…wow, Maybelline really gets it done.” “Kristy smiles st both of us, the kind of smile that makes Julie Andrews look like a jaded crack whore.”
And it’s only 1.99, so maybe Maryse will add it to her “finds”.
So I am reading Keep Dancing. And if remember right I think like the first book better. But it is a good read. Some quibbles and not in love with it, but still. I’m sticking to it, interested in where it is going and it is turning out to be a quick read. Then.
Then I just read a scene that is a total WTF. Its an intimate scene and it manages to be both gross, crude, and total over the top purple AND flowery prose. I was waiting for a punch line.
Totally startled me out of the story, lol.
So glad a few if you are loving on Blur & Forget. I did recommend it to Tessa I think….but it was on someones top book list first which is why I read it.
I agree the second book was better…way more angst but the first book sets it all up so beautifully.
Finished.
Going to stick with rock stars and read Louder than Love. I just re read Maryse’s review and sounds just right. And I know Lisa loved it. 😉
Oh I LOVED that one bev!!!! She’s a GREAT writer!
After spending a big chunk of the day re-doing and organizing my kindle, I wish there was a way to synch my Amazon wish list into a kindle collection in order of when they release. Need to make a spreadsheet, or maybe just simply print out my wish list. ;>
Cheryl, I agree I need date order.
Mary Elizabeth had 2 books free on Amazon
So I really, really did not expect to get soooo emotional at the end of Indebted 6!!! Jeez *sniff, sniff – reaching for tissue* Seriously! Six books and not one tear…and now have red swollen eyes from the stream of tears. Guh! I so can’t handle letters from loved lost ones! Uh! Guh! And so grateful that it wasn’t a one and done once the “bad” guys were dispatched. No one enjoys a quickie ending….one clicked Indebted Epiolgue. Despite the crazy long length of this series….I liked it…every frustrating, stomach dropping, heart pounding, silently sobbing, darkly insane moment!
Oh Bev thank you, thank you. I harp on about that book so much..I’m so excited that someone is reading it. I just loved it so much and still think about it. The characters resonated with me, maybe because they are grown ups with grown up concerns rather than the usual college aged characters.
God I hope you like it.
Writing about Louder than Love made me think about those books that just stay with you.
At the time of reading they may be enjoyable and ranked as 5 star reads but really the true test for me is if I remember the story and characters months, even years later.
I can can put books into three catagories:
A) Instantly forgotten – cant even recall the storyline much less the characters. (And there are a few of these in my ‘Read’ file.)
B) Can vaguely remember the story but couldn’t name characters in a pop quiz if my life depended upon it.
And C) can clearly recall entire passages of the book, the feels it gave me and the characters – who I miss like absent friends.
How about the rest of you??
I’m the SAME way Lisa.
For me what surprises me is when I rank a book lower after I’ve finished, but a year or so later, crave to read a book LIKE it, and can tell you every single thing about it still. And I realize I’m recommending it to people… that’s when I want to backtrack and UP the rating to 5 stars (or at least 4.5). 😉
One example that stands out in my mind right now would be that creepy psych-thriller called You by Caroline Kepnes. I gave that one 3.75 stars, but truly, it’s at least 4 or 4.5 stars to me now. I can’t WAIT for the second book to come out.
Lisa, I feel exactly the same way! I actually like Bully MORE now, after reading Jared’s take in Until You. *sigh*
DG, yep, I felt the same way about Indebted!
Cheryl, I’m gonna give you my amazon sign in and let you organize my books, k? *grin*
bev, rock stars,,,,mmm, I love rockstars, I may just follow you on that path once I finish this book that I’m reading!
What’s everyone else up to on this quiet Sunday?
Lisa I have the worst book amnesia. But it always makes re-reads fun, lol.
When I was reading Act Like It I really liked it. But I wasn’t sure if I loved it as much as others. Then I finished and wanted to read another like it or by the same author. Except that was her first book. Its not angsty, or any mind games, but straight up fun CR. Great heroine and wonderful flirting/banter.
I swear that must be hard to write, dialogue. Especially flirty and quick witted. But dang I love it. And chemistry. Like a movie the characters need chemistry.
Lisa I agree with the categories. Maryse, me too! Then I have to strain to remember why it wasn’t a 5* when I first read it.
I’m curious. How did you ladies find the blog and then start posting?
I used to read the Amazon discussion boards. They would have long threads of book recs. I first saw At Peace, Beautiful Disaster, and Eyes of Silver Eyes of Gold mentioned there. When I got my first ereader of course had to check these books out. I want to say it was through looking up KA, also how I stumbled onto Scandalicious book reviews, that I first found Maryse. But it could of been BD, too.
Talking of At Peace and my book amnesia. I do very clearly remember snuggled in, basically reading under the covers and starting that book. I remember that whole first scene of Vi going to tell Joe to turn the music down. And him and “Buddy”, lol.
I thought it would be a bad neighbor type book.
Anyway I lurked for a long time. One or two random comments. Then MichelleS, I’m pretty sure, asked about LK. Then I just started chatting.
Bev, I couldn’t find my next book to read. So I was Googling for good PNR books and Maryse’s blog was high on the result set. I was too busy going through all her lists to comment at first. But I doubt it took me long since I’m such a blabbermouth. :-/
I have Beautiful Burn hot on my Kindle. But I think Ibwant to read Shep’s novella first. I haven’t gotten to that one yet.
MichelleS, I squirreled away from what I was reading to your rec, Know Not Why. It’s so darn cute. Howie keeps noticing appealing things about Artie’s face and he’s just so annoyed. “… this guy needs to STOP HAVING A FACE.”. lol right?
Did any of you ladies read this?
It is so right on and made me laugh.
https://www.scandaliciousbookreviews.com/why-im-taking-a-breather-from-contemporary-romance/
YESSSS!! I didn’t have to read anything beyond point #1 which I’ve harped about on here before. Authors read this, learn this. Thanks for posting Bev so true and funny.
How did I find this blog? I had just gotten back into pleasure reading vs. reading for vet school until my eyes bled, and wanted to find more current recs. I was mostly reading paranormal/fantasy and historical then with some contemporary thrown in. I just kinda jumped in too. Read the blog for a few days and then posted. Love coming here to chat and find fabulous recs 😀
Lisa – I am the same also. I truly feel guilty that I have a ton of books that I don’t even recall what they are about….kinda like I wasted my one-clicks. *deep sighs*. And there are the ONES that I loved, remember, reread, and stay with me. I even made a collection on my kindle app of books I would recommend…
Bev – I found Maryse’s blog after googling to find books similar to one I just finished – think it was Beautiful Disaster. And for the longest did not comment but then there are those books that you are in the middle of and you want to gush, rant or share about…so ladies ya’ll get me better than most when it comes to book addiction…yes, totally admit it…I am a book addict. *grinning*
*waves to everyone* Sunday so hopefully an easy day. I’ve been on a huge paranormal kick. I’m on the fourth Jane Yellowrock book. 🙂 Thank goodness for libraries. At 8 dollars each, I’d hate to pay for them.
That link, I just want to say one word. YES! I love the ‘And FYI—A motorcycle club prez who moonlights as a dom trying to climb in his step-sister’s britches is so far inside the box, it ain’t even funny.’ Worse. I saw that book! *snickers* And the whole rape thing, seriously! I feel bad thinking, yeah she was raped, but I still hate her! :/ Also, OMG covers! Yes, no other words are needed beyond covers. Every point she made, yes.
Finding this blog? I was looking for a book blog, honestly. However, I wanted a paranormal blog. I’d click, look at this site, see the contemporary, and run away. I did that for a few months. Then I saw a “What to read after 50” and thought, hrm. I already liked other BDSM books. So I looked at it, and saw a series I hated. lol I ended up closing it again. Then, went back and saw the review for Up in the Air. *sighs* That’s one of my favorites for a reason. Read it, but stayed silent still. I started reading others goodies, but not because of here, but just books I’d find and got curious about. Then, I saw those books were on here, so I finally got hooked. I still didn’t comment until someone recommended FCH and that blew me away enough to actually say something. I haven’t shut up since.
DG lately I’ve been wondering if its the sheer quantity of (short) books we read now that affects our memory of the stories inside those books.
I remember following a series like Clan of the Cave Bear for years (maybe even a decade?) and always being super excited about the next release without any memory lapse of the previous book.
But back then I was reading maybe a couple dozen books a year. Now, I can’t even remember which ones are my unfinished series. In the dozens of series I’ve started in the last couple of years, its impossible to remember. I also find it impossible to stay as committed to the characters as I used to.
IMHO its too many short books and not enough original plot lines.
In the end, though, that’s what separates the average writer from the greats. Creativity. It’s rather easy (comparatively) to do your own twist on a story that’s currently popular. To think of something new that no one else has takes a lot of time and thought. It’s not ‘Oh, everyone likes a stepbrother story? Here’s mine.’ It’s thinking about a story in your head that no one else has thought of. Something that you sat thinking, ‘What do I want to read? What’s really going to be different?’ Think about the books that you truly love and think, what like it came before? So, yeah. You’re going to get regurgitated same theme. 🙂 It’s inevitable if you read more than one book a year.
Fabi, you are so right! Not enough unique plots. That’s probably why I look for ones that has something that stands out….definitely have to read a sample prior to one-clicking. Kinda like Amour, Amour – to me it was different. Would have liked a little longer ending but overall it had a uniqueness to the story.
Looking for unique HEA stories…..so ladies night what is the most unique story you have read this past year?
DG, contemporary romance-wise, I’d say Diamonds by KA Linde. 17 “mean girl” type who falls for a much older man and lies to him about her age. It’s a simple premise, but the uniqueness of the MC and the relationship and lies in itself kept me on my toes. Honestly though, most of the most unique stories for me were in Paranormal or fantasy last year.
erm. Just remembered. Diamonds is not HEA. The second half, Gold, is the HEA.
Landline & Carry On by Rainbow Rowell.
Landline the MCs are married. During a crisis point in their marriage she realizes that the phone in her childhood bedroom allows her to talk to her husband in the past.
Carry On is the name of the Fan fiction that the heroine in Fan Girl writes. Its that story basically.
Her writing and premises are great. Seriously I will go back and randomly read whole passages.
I agree with Fabi….the sheer quantity of books I get through makes it impossible to recall every book.
And Tessa…I agree too. Not enough unique storylines that make books stand out from the pack.
Bev I found Maryse and all of the lovely ladies here by literally searching google for ‘what to read after Thoughtless’. I lurked for a while before building up the courage to comment. It didn’t take long to realize I’d stumbled upon a whole community of book addicts.
DG Books I’ll never forget from last year….Badger for CR even though its not really a romance.
And Illuminae for Paranormal/fantasy. Unique in every way including how its presented.
Thinking I might need to start a spreadsheet also…..I’ll add those to my list to check out. Maryse’s lists are awesome because she also gives a tidbit about what the book is about.
For paranormal (which I don’t usually read a ton of), A Court of Thorn and Roses. This is my first Fae read.
For CR, Chasing Memories by Ellie Wade (unique plot for me). Seems like I remember a comment when it came out that there was another book similar by another author. Anyone know the title of the other book?
Any CP fans, Anne posted a link to the first chapter of the new book. Its over on Sunday’s post. And …..gah…..want.
Won’t be able to start til Tuesday after work.
Bev, that link was so spot on!! #3 is what we were just discussing about the cover models. LOL! Nikki definitely doesn’t hold back with what she thinks. No cleaned up language there. 🙂
Hmmm, I’m trying to remember how I found Maryse’s blog. I think it was when I was looking for what to read after Fifty Shades and Bared to You. I am so happy it brought me here. I thought those were good reads, but they don’t compare to the exceptional reads I’ve found because of Maryse and you ladies!! 😉
DG, I liked her Assassin books more. The series that’s complete that I LOVED was CL Wilson’s Tairen Soul series. We can all thank MichelleS for making sure we knew about that wonderful series. 😀
PHEW!!!! I finally got caught up on all of the comments…so much I want to reply to so I hope I don’t leave anything out. Y’all had some great topics going the last couple of days! 😀
From waaaaaaayyyyy up there…thank you, Jenny!! It’s Big Sky by Kitty Thomas. She’s taken there supposedly for a job (not to be his wife), and I do remember hearing something about a milking machine. Good lord, that’s going to make me squirm right out of my chair when I read it. And I WILL read it!
Jean! *squeezes Jean in a bear hug* I’m so glad it wasn’t as bad as you had feared it would be. And I’ll withhold my wrath from you right now since you’re in recovery mode. 😉
Lisa…YES to those book categories!
Another thing I have found is that certain books which affected me strongly at one point probably wouldn’t affect me the same way now because of how my “book needs” have changed over time. One book that comes to mind is Flawed by Kate Avelynn…when I read it 3 or 4 years ago, I remember being GUTTED by it. Now though, compared to other books I’ve read and what I need from a book as far as the storyline, plot or even writing style, I think it would make me sad but I wouldn’t be gutted. I think it’s that I need *more* from books now, and certain things irritate me now which didn’t a few years ago, ya know?
OMG Bev! How many times have we said most of those things from that list here?? Maybe the authors will start listening to the readers soon…
Alright, last thing…how I found this blog. I remember googling some titles of books I had read or wanted to, and I would repeatedly see this blog pop up in the results. I ended up sending Maryse an email because I was trying to find a book title – and it seemed like she was a book guru 😉 – and her response was so sweet considering I was just a random person asking a question…but that’s our Maryse, welcoming and a sweetheart to anyone and everyone who swings by or stays here. And that’s exactly WHY I ended up coming back around and staying here, because of her interaction with people who commented. I hadn’t really seen that on other book blogs I had come across. Add to that the love of nail polish and makeup around here, the weekly release posts, and the fact that SO many of the books I read prior to finding this place were talked about here, and I was HOOKED! 😀
Just reading all these comments. How did I find this blog? I think I was looking for something contemporary after 50 Shades, and had no clue. The first book I read that was a Maryse rec was Backstage Pass. I hadn’t read a rock star romance, so that was seriously hot. So I came back for more. I found Sweet Dreams, then went and hid for months reading every single KA novel ever. I don’t remember when I started commenting. Somebody probably mentioned Rhage or Ram or Jamie Fraser or Adam Black or something! LOL.
Bev – that article was hilarious. I agree with all of those points. A couple of years ago I would probably have loved a bunch of what is turing me off now. Just overdone. Maybe these 99 cent Indie books have worn out that part of my brain? I need better writing. Period. Some plots have been pretty good but the writing was just mediocre at best. The books I have liked this last year had better writing. Maybe that’s why so few CRs made my list? I want to go back to my roots too! Historicals, PNRs, Fantasy.
HOLY MOLY MichelleS You’ve been with me from the start of my indie-obsession!!! 😀
Yes, Maryse… Years… And have enjoyed it immensely. I swear 90% of what I read comes from your blog.
I love you guys!!!!!
It took me a day or two to get to it, but here is the Jan Fav list. I was going to make a shared Google doc, but it’s small enough that I think I can just paste in here. (Not sure the formatting will hold though)
I find it interesting that so many of us read so many of the same books, yet the favorite of the month seems to be different for most of us, there are only a couple of repeats. I think I have almost every one of these on my tbr. 🙂
I wanted to add Low as Maryse’s fav but I’m not sure if it is truly the Jan fav. Also, Amy and some others are missing. If anyone wants to add or update anything, feel free. Just a fun start to 2016.

🙂
Fabi!! Well done. Thank you for doing that for us.
Awesome!!! Thanks Fabi!!!
Oooooh, my favorite from January was Hausfrau by Jill Alexander Essbaum. I’m *still* thinking of that book. 😕
Awesomeness. I’ll add you to my spreadsheet!
