LisafromDFW: I’ve been reading books based on all the 2017 favorites lists. The latest is Waking Olivia. It is a “forbidden” (not very forbidden ) SLOW BURN CR. The MC fight the attraction. Catnip! *glitter bomb* happy last day of August!
I can’t believe it’s almost fall!! I’ll get to wear my cute sweaters! And my hair won’t frizz. 😛
Loved Waking Olivia and Drowning Erin is great too!
I stayed up way too late last night with Fifty Shades of Greg and now I’m up early with it. Loving this guy! Unapologetically honest which I’m finding very endearing.
*another glitter bomb*
Not only is it Friday, but a long weekend and crazy heat wave gone. Oooh, had my first DD pumpkin spice coffee yesterday, going apple picking tomorrow and maybe making pumpkin pie!! *squee*
Unfortunately my book life is not so squee-worthy. I am def slumping because everything I read is making me crabby & nitpicky. I read 10 books in August and the only one that was better than just ok was The Naked Truth by Vi Keeland (4 ****).
Good morning! Happy Friday! The 2nd season of Ozark was released on Netflix today!
Leslie–sorry about the slump. I empathize because I feel like I’m in a bit of one, but I’m determined not to repeat the one I had during this time last year. I’m going to try to cull out my short stories and novellas if I have to. That way, a condensed, less drawn out story line might pull me back in and I won’t waste one of my potentially great books on my wonky reading frame of mind. But right now, I’m giving Robin’s BR book, Fifty Shades of Greg, a try, and if that doesn’t work out, I’m going to move on to the J.R. Ward ‘Consumed’ short stories.
Happy Friday and start to a long weekend. One-clicked a few from list. Thank you Maryse!! Now to pack the car for our vacation!! 😉
Update on Payback’s A Bitch. Finished it last night. It was a hate each other to love and throw in he’s her soon to be stepbrother. It was laugh out loud at times. Would say around a 3.5 to 4 star. Did not enjoy the abruptness of the ending and that there was not an epilogue. However, the author said at the end of the book there is an upcoming novella.
Leslie, I know I say it all the time jokingly, but I kind of mean it to.
I don’t meantotally flip to watching from reading like I have, but it can be a palate cleanser when you find yourself constantly unsatisfied.
I used to take a week and catch up on shows, the ones I’d missed to read, lol. A whole week of Heartland, Justified, Mad Men or…..
Also, a bit like Nay I’d read short things. But not short stories. I’d do reread of favorites but focus on favorite scenes in the book. Sometimes it would lead to a full re read. I’d find little moments I’d forgotten about or something would have new meaning going back to it.
I think I reccomend Fight My Way so much because, to me, it mirrors the books we love. It’s a good CR, just in show format. You can watch it for free on Viki. Just 16 episodes. So beginning, middle, and end. No ch or continuation to next season.
Maryse, is there a lot of humidity?
Does your hair grow 10× its size like Monica’s in that episode of Friends.
My Pippa streak was almost complete with just one book to go and Hot Heir came out today!! Ahhhhh. It will definitely be a finishing Pippa’s books weekend. And I’ve now watched To All the Boys 3 times. I think I may have a problem.
I have been in a serious book slump! I decided this week to do a “castaway” theme. I have no idea why, maybe because I recently saw the movie The Mountain Between Us. This week I’ve re-read Unseen Messages (Pepper Winters), On the Island (Tracey Garvis-Graves) and am halfway through Surviving Raine, Book 1 (Shay Savage). Next up I have Wreckage (Emily Bleeker). Do you have any other castaway-type suggestions?
Hi Mona!!
here you go (and it’s been recently updated with more recommendations). 😀
https://www.maryse.net/books/book-recommendations/what-to-read-after-on-the-island-stranded-on-a-deserted-island-romance-books.html
Happy Friday All-
Thank you Maryse; I just clicked “Best Kept Secrets” and “Accidents of Marriage”. I am currently reading Transcend by Jewel E Ann and OMG I am loving it. My head is in a whirlwind trying to figure it out as I am very early into it. Wish I could just pause life so I could get back to it!
For those in a book slump or funk as I like to call it…I have a go to book when this happens to me and it works every time. I reread “The Sea of Tranquility” That book never gets old and I find each time I read it I fall more in love with Josh Bennet…sigh.
Don’t they sound awesome Jenn??? I have a feeling I won’t be able to put them down.
Happy Friday everyone! I’m also doing the Fifty Shades of Greg BR – I haven’t been able to read as much as I’d like yet – – but I am a few “chapters/girls” in and it’s definitely an unapologetic account of things and I like it! 🙂
Michele G? Did I read that right? Greg? ‘Cause I do see a book called “Fifty Shades of Greg”
Or… did you mean Fifty Shades of Grey and OMG YOU HAVEN’T READ IT YET??! I’m so jealous of you! I couldn’t put them down (#2 is my absolute favorite and had me gasping at one point).
Bev, I have done the watch instead of read thing in the past and it helped. But if you think I am picky about books…ugh…I am just as picky about shows. 🙁
It might be time for Twilight marathon.
*tosses more glitter* oh, to heck with it, *pumps up the confetti guns and lets ’em rip* Girls! I am throwing out another 5! I know, I can’t believe it either! That’s 2 for August, after not having any in so long! The book comes out Tuesday, so not too long for everyone to wait. Josh and Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating by Christina Lauren. Loved. It. It gave me Beautiful Player-ish vibes, which obviously, is a huge plus, being as though Player is one of my Top Ten ever. But this book isn’t a copy cat, it was more of a practiced ease and style of writing, you know? I just… Loved. It. *twirls in the glitter*
Yay for you Grey!! I’ve got a hold on that one through my library overdrive account…good to hear you liked it so much!!
Nicola Moriarty’s The Other Women is on sale for 1.99 from 12.99. I’ve not read her yet, but it’s on my tbr! 🙂
Good find Tasha, that one sounds awesome!!!
Trust Leslie. Trust.
And if you hate it you can rant at me.
Anytime I bring up Kellan you can be all….”Remember that time you had me watch a Kdrama…..let’s talk about that.”
Maryse, it’s Fifty Shades of GREG. I’m loving it so hard! It’s a real life account of this guy’s dating life and it’s super unapologetic! He’s the kind of guy you love to hate, but he’s really growing on some of us!! I’ve actually cackled. CACKLED!
*starts sweeping up glitter*
Man…I take a break from cleaning my house to come here, and I end up cleaning here as well. This is NOT the day to mess with my OCDness, Grey!! 😆
*giggles* bev is at it again. Resistance is futile, Leslie.
OMG!!!! Jenn is discovering the incredibleness of the Transcend duet!!!! *throws swept-up glitter in the air*
*looks at new mess and sighs*
Dang, I need to go on vacation with Cheryl to her vacation house…
Alright Maryse, I’m going in…I’m starting Accidents of Marriage today. 😀
Jordan Marie has a new book out in her Lucas Brother Series called Cocked and Loaded. I recommend this series, they are a fun read!
Maryse-Yes they absolutely do; what’s a girl to do with all these books…YAY us and I have three whole days off from work with nothing to do but finish the Transcend duet and then I am diving in, not sure which one I will start with. HMMM…. I just saw Robin’s post and now I want to read “Fifty Shades of Greg” too. Love an Unapologetic man, well at least in my Book World!
Amy-Yes “Transcend”…. I am loving so hard on this book.
Maryse- Thank you for the castaway list!! Woohoo! I’m excited!!
Lol, Amy resist me all the time.
Hey, trying something new can help you out of a rut and be fun. Maybe she’d find something she likes or maybe not. *shrug*
Plus, new things and listening to a new language can get your brain up and firing in new ways.
I’m loving Everything You Want Me to Be. I finally have that feeling of being completely submerged in the story and not wanting to come up for air. Darn life. 😛
*plays in messy glitter*
My best new read of August was Binding 13 by Chloe Walsh. 4 stars. I really liked it. New-to-me author too. I didn’t read any new 5 stars in August 🙁 They don’t seem to crop up that often. I’m looking forward to the new Christina Lauren book. Your rec sounds good, Grey. Fingers crossed I like it too.
*holds out cocktail glass for Amy*
Drink please. I will sweep up the glitter.
Maybe a strong Amy cocktail will make me less book crabby and nitpicky.
Mona
I loved, loved, loved UNCHARTED. If you like On The Island you will too.
JulieO
Thank you for the recommendation! I’m downloading Uncharted! I didn’t know there had been a sequel! Thank you again!
I hate September, but love a long weekend.
Going to get a lot of reading done, right everybody (everybody but Leslie who is going to get a lot of drama watching done) ? Even I am going to get a lot of reading done, right self?
I finished Fifty Shades of Greg late last night and I loved it! Aside from Bring Down the Stars (which I think I picked for June, July, and now August) it’s my favorite for the month. The buddy-read was exciting to say the least. Lots of heated opinions and mixed reviews. I think everyone from here who participated loved it though! You guys check it out if you’re in the mood for something different! But read the blurb. Greg can be an a$$hat! But he is also a misunderstood romantic who will pull at your heartstrings if you give him the chance.
I totally agree with Robin. I still have a bit left, buy I’m LOVing Fifty Shades of Greg. And like Robin said, make sure you read the blurb–he gives PLENTY of honest, fair warning about what you’re about to embark upon. I really wish I’d known an unjaded Greg back when I was in the dating world.
I’m a Fabi with this as I wouldn’t be able to get past the title.
And then the feminist jokes taking up part of the blurb.
Wait, I just looked at the Amazon comments.
Are those 5 the buddy read people?
Is this someone you all know?
4 out of 5.
I’m dying.
My friend Dee read it and I kept seeing it pop up in the comments but ignored it because of the title. Finally I asked her about it and she sold me so I mentioned in my group that I was going to read it next and it snowballed from there. He’s not ‘technically’ a writer. Just a dude with an interesting dating life who decided to document his journey.
In my GR feed rather, not comments.
A new Cormoran Strike book is coming out…Yay!
And the sequel to Vicious which I’m curious about.
Grace Draven has a new one coming out too. It looks good. Where’s MichelleS?
Tessa, Sisters in the Winter Wood. Looks good.
And Josh and Hazels Guide to Not Dating. I keep stockpiling their books without reading them. But this sounds gooood.
I was reading this list
https://smartbitchestrashybooks.com/2018/09/septembers-new-releases-4/
I love that I’m feeling excited for new releases.
Speaking of the name Hazel, you know what’s funny? In high school I knew a sweetheart of a girl named Hazel, and I thought it was such an old fashioned and weird name to have.
Now? As an adult? I think the name is gorgeous.
Hazel from The True Story of Atticus and Hazel.
Hazel Grace from TFIOS.
They both had that beautiful name but HOLY MOLY, they both broke my heart!
I like all these old fashioned names coming back.
When I was younger I liked the unusual ones, but now lean more towards the classics.
Amy….don’t jinx my book.
You, Jan, and I should read it when it comes out.
It seems like it’s been a long time since I’ve really done a BR.
Even though I still think a BW would be fun.
I know we’ve discussed this before but I kind of read it with one eye because at the time, I didn’t have wood floors. Now that I do, I’m wondering if any of you recommend the Roomba or maybe a less expensive substitute?
I thought the name Jasper sounded old fashioned. I didn’t want to be one of those ppl that needed a unique name that no one else had and I don’t like really out there names. Now, I know no one with that name and it bothers me a little when ppl say “that’s different”.
I like the name Hazel. 2 of my aunt’s nieces, (on her side, not mine) just had baby girls with the names Beasley and Elowen. I think they’re the coolest names. Lol
Several on this week’s list sound good – Temptation, Hot Heir, Waking Olivia, Whole Lotta Love – all added to my TBR list.
I’ve been going through my older TBR list to look at some I’ve missed. Thinking about starting He+She. Anyone read it?
I LOVE the name Jasper, Tasha. But Hazel….hmmmmm…. my dad had an older cousin named Hazel whom I remember as very old-fashioned and fuddy-duddy with blue rinse helmet-style hair with lots of hair spray, and she always wore shiny nylon stockings and little low-heeled court shoes NO MATTER WHAT SHE WAS DOING. I can see I’m going to have to reimagine my image of Hazels.
Bev I’m totally up for a buddy read!
She sounds AWESOME Jan! I would love to read a book with a character like her. Lol
Nay
Yes to the Roomba. Had mine for 3 years and cleans my hardwood floors and carpet like a trooper at least 3 times a week. I only run it when I am home bc it has a tendency to get stuck under my couch, just the right height. Also have dogs and if perchance there happens to be a mistake made, doesn’t happen often, want to know so it isn’t smeared into carpets. Yuck! I love mine.
I LOVE my Roomba. Floors and carpets are always clean because of it. I can’t believe I used to sweep and vacuum by hand. Seriously. I have since pulled out my Dyson recently to do a “proper vacuuming” and it pulled NOTHING up. Yep. That’s how good my Roomba has been doing.
Bev
There is a sequel to Vicious? There were 4 books in series I think, is she writing another?
Would love that.
Picked WE WERE MOTHERS for kindle first pick this month. Ready for a suspense
JulieO the Vicious by V.E. Schwab?
I’m watching a show called Please Take Care of My Fridge.
Its Korean.
In these 2 eps the guest are Tayaeng and G Dragon. The show transfers their fridge(or contents) to the studio. The hosts go through the fridge. Then a panel of top chefs have, in a very short time, to make a dish that fits what the celebrity feels like. Then the celeb picks the winner based on the dish he likes. Just watched Tayaengs and now they are going through G Dragon’s fridge.
But the funny part is the looks on these Chefs’ faces when they start pulling out huge truffles, abalone, and tins of caviar, lol.
Amy, have you ever had Natto? From when you lived in Japan?
Bev I’m a little unsure about that one. You test it. 🙂 I wonder if the library will have it.
Guy in store smells so strongly of pot it actually made my eyes water, lol.
Bev
Sorry. I automatically jumped to the “Vicious” by L J Shen. One of my favorites. You got me all excited!
Thanks, Julie and Maryse. Then my decision is made. Can y’all tell me which model you have? There are several. If I don’t need all the bells and whistles of the more expensive ones, I’m good with going cheaper.
Ha ha ha Tasha. Now there’s a thought. Hazel senior might make a great secondary character, mightn’t she?
Maryse, I’m sorry for the delayed response. I saw Robin confirmed it was 50 Shades of Greg that I was reading. Alas, I burned through those Christian Grey books years ago at a rapid pace (twice)!
I guess it is a good fail safe to wake up before my alarm, but I wish my brain knew the difference between a Sunday and a weekday.
I need coffee …..and a cookie.
And I’m going to open my book and read a little bit.
bev…NO. I couldn’t get past the smell. 😕 I tried a good amount of unusual foods in Japan (and enjoyed the majority of them) but natto was not one of those things. *shudders*
Okay, it’s WAY too quiet in here. We need a bev quiz…
And as for the pot-smelling guy who made bev’s eyes water…LOL!!!!!! Were you in Portland? Because the whole damn city seems to smell like pot. 😆
OMG my fellow book loving hotties I finished the Transcend duet and I loved it so much. I want to scream it from the roof tops.
Amy-I have started “ Accidents in Marriage” is this the one your reading too? I literally just started only two chapters in. It’s hard for me to let go of Griffin and Nate so I am having a hard time focusing on this.
Finished a book. A very disappointing book …..but still. Now on to my next which takes place in the ballet world.
And it will make two off my Tasha list.
Nope. It was not Portland, lol. It was so strong. Maybe they were shut up in the car with it to be that saturated.
I don’t know that it bring anyone to the yard, a quiz. Everyone is just disappearing. Growing up. Turning 40 and moving away.
*scoffs* Well, when *I* turned 40, *I* didn’t move away. Then again, no one has ever accused me of growing up…
Jenn!! So glad you experienced the incredibleness of the Transcend duet!!! And yes, it was Accidents of Marriage I started a couple of days ago. I finished it earlier today, and MAN! I am emotionally spent. I went into it thinking I would feel one way only to end it feeling something totally different. When is it still worth fighting for, and when is it too little too late? Such a gray area. Let me know what you think of it!

I can’t even get myself to watch TV that Josh Duhamel is in. It’s a serious affliction. I know no one.

Maryse… Marry, F***, Kill
Maryse would:
M– Gong Yoo(!) Cause she knows.
F– Nikolaj Coster-Waldau Because he looks good in sweaters.
K–Chris Hemsworth Cause he’s kind of bland.
Switch F and K and we’re in. 😉 Why? I don’t know who Nikolaj is… and I’m okay with letting y’all know that. I could Google and I might change my mind, but why waste my pure innocence in the matter?
*snort* 😛
Lol.
How sweet is Maryse not to kill Gong Yoo even though he might be too much of a pretty boy for her.
This one site I visit someone was saying that he got so big after Goblin he is in all these commercials. His face is on everything.
And a couple of us were like not from were we are because nobody knows him, lol.
bev… no, really. HE IS SOOOOO CUTE!!!!
He really is. It makes me want to do a rewatch of either Coffee Prince or Goblin. But there are 3 dramas coming out this fall that, if I like them, I’ll want to watch live.
Is Coffee Prince and Goblin on Netflix or something else? Which one would be the best to watch first?
JulieO really? You want to try one?
Ooooh. If Jean wasn’t already my favorite….
Coffee Prince is an older one. It seems to be a modern classic. It was my second Kdrama. It is a slice of life romantic comedy. The hero (Gong Yoo) believes that the heroine is a man. She let’s him believe it for job reasons. Sounds far fetched, but believable. The actress absolutely inhabits this role. It’s one of my favorites.
You can find it on Viki and Drama Fever. I think Viki usually has better subs.
Goblin is fantasy. This has mixed reviews but I loved it. Its epic and cinematic. Beautiful but melancholy with splashes of humor. Great sound track. I watched it last winter and it was a perfect winter nights watch.Gong Yoo is cursed to be a goblin (because reasons) living an eternal life until he meets his The Goblin’s bride who can end his immortality. There is a huge age difference between Gong Yoo both as an actor and as the character and the actress/heroine. I didnt have a problem but many did. She is a senior in HS when they meet. In Korea I believe seniors are around 19/20.
You can find it on Drama Fever.
They might be on Netflix, so check if you have it. I don’t. I’ve heard that their subs can be kind of simplistic.
I’ve heard some people say that it can take around 2 eps until they are invested in a drama.
Let me know if you start watching.
Gah, makes me want to rewatch at least favorite parts, lol.
Bev
Thanks. I’ll try and find one or the other sometime this week. I like shows that are kind of quirky and paranormal.
Amy-FINALLY finished “Accidents in Marriage” Honestly it did not work for me. I agree with you about going in it and feeling one way only to feel something different. The synopsis really doesn’t accurately portray what this book is because I definitely did not feel the verbal/emotional abuse aspect. I did not connect at all with any of the characters and I found through the whole book I was desperately trying to feel something/anything while reading this and it really just left me empty and exhausted.
Well dang, Jenn! That stinks. 😕
I actually DID connect with the characters for the most part, and for me that is why I was emotionally worn out by the end. I can see though how it would be exhausting if you are really not feeling much for the characters in any way.
What’s next for you?
