It’s ready!!! It looks like the book gods want to make sure to end the month off with a bang, (100+ books again)! And it started the year off with a bang too, ’cause I’ve been on reading roll. There have been some MEGA hits already, this new year!
BREAKING NEWS UPDATE!!! L.J. SHEN ALERT!!! This one JUST WENT LIVE EARLY!!! ➔ ➔ ➔ ➔ Defy (Sinners of Saint Book 2) And here is book #1 (Vicious (Sinners of Saint Book 1)) that so many went crazy for.
Emilie: i just read one book called Vicious by L.J. Shen. I just couldn’t put it down!
Shannon: Omg ..I just finished Vicious … and I want more … can u recommend similar reads until book #2 ?…lol
And here are the ones that look especially good to me, today! How to Date a Douchebag: The Failing Hours by Sara Ney (BULLY ALERT!!! I’m probably starting this one next, ’cause I GREATLY ABHORRED the star of this one, when he appeared in the first book. Ugh. The jerkiest of all jerks and I am SO IN!!!), El Diablo (he’s pure BAD GUY, and well sheeeeesh… after Michelle’s ecstatic reaction, I have to jump in!!), Good Boy (I love both these authors and the blurb had me laughing already. Hockey star and his one-night stand are stuck in a wedding together. This is gonna be fun!!), Fury on Fire (he’s moody, he just got out of prison and he’s her new neighbor and she thinks he’s RUDE!!! Plus the reviews seem to indicate he’s a real jerk and hard to connect to. YAY!!! LOL!!!), Crown of Lies (yeah that blurb just has me. She’s in love with one, but her father forces her to be with another…), Some Kind of Magic (well, heck… this one just screams “Adam Levine” to me, and if spraying herself with pheromones is going to get the hottest rock star’s attention, it just sounds like a good reading-time to me!), Becoming Mrs. Lockwood (because who doesn’t love a good “regular girl” with a “Hollywood heartthrob” story… especially when the blurb hints that “You may think you know where this story goes—not even close.”) MINE!!!, Imperfect Harmony (rock star and a potential reality show, but they want dirt and juicy footage, and he’s as stable as they come. So he decides to ask his best girl “friend” – who’s loaded in drama – to be on the show with him). Hahahah!!!
Yep, as you can see, lots of choices today, and there are PLENTY more that I highlighted below that sound right up our alley, so take a look!
P.S. Let me know if I’m missing any or if you loved any (from this list or elsewhere).

Who’s in the mood to read an “old-school” feeling “new adult” indie book, that will make you laugh out loud (over and over again), all, while making us work in that delightful slow burn way, for the romance story. If you love the college love stories like I do, THIS is one of the awesome-fun ones! I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!!!!! P.S. Here’s my 4.5 star review
Angela: This book was awesome. So funny and witty. The quotes at the beginning of each chapter were the best. And she write an outstanding male POV
Sarah: Thank you, thank you! I have been in such a book funk and one-clicked this. I read the prologue and first chapter before I had to go to work. I love it!!!
- New York Nights: A Collection of Steamy, Alpha-Male Romances by Whitney G. <— WHITNEY G BOOK BUNDLE ALERT!! “This collection includes Reasonable Doubt (Full Series), Turbulence: A Cocky Pilot Romance, and Naughty Boss.”

Cindy: “Andrew from Reasonable Doubt by Whitney Gracia Williams!! He is such a jerk that you gotta love him!”
Julie o: Another jerk that I fell in love with, just add him to my list!!!!
Sharon: I am obsessed with Turbulence! It’s so different, but has all of the qualities I gravitate to. Angst. Broody, jerk of a male character. Lots of steam. Lots of snark. It’s not ooey gooey. Love it!
Niki: Turbulence was freaking awesome!!!! I loved it!!

Fabi: I just read a great Dystopian M/M Romance. Heavier on the romance than the dystopian theme. I couldn’t put it down until I finished. It’s one of those hurt-comfort stories that get me every time.
- Make Me (The Sterling Shore Series Book 10) by C.M. Owens <— HILARIOUS “FAKE DOM” RECENT RELEASE ALERT!!! And now we’ve got some feedback ’cause Shannon recommends it!
Just finished Make Me by C.M. Owens. It was really good. Of course I LOVE all the Sterling Shore books. The whole fake Dom thing made for some hilarious scenes. They were awkward with a capital A. I was laughing out loud!

MichelleS: “El Diablo: 5 huge stars. One of the BEST anti heroes ever, Alejandro Martinez. Colombian crime boss. OMG. What a ride! ….So M. Robinson is my new favorite author. I am now checking out all her samples after that crazy ride she put me through with El Diablo. …It gave me the same “feels” as Surviving Raine and Captive in the Dark. That anti-hero you should and would hate in real life, but for some reason you are attracted to him! And let me tell you – Alejandro Martinez is as bad as they get. Totally, unapologetically a completely ruthless bast@#d. And he STAYS that way. He is not changing for anyone. And it kills me to say that I LIKED it. Ah “cariño” – this book gave me a huge book fog.
I couldn’t put this book down. If you’re in the mood for something darker, pick this one up.”

Luckily, every professional hockey player knows that you’ve got to make an effort if you want to score…” P.S. it’s a standalone even though it’s sort of… part of a series, and Fabi has loved the whole series so far She says: “It sort of follows the Him and Us books but this one is F/M. First!
There, I beat everyone else. 😛
King’s Cage, The Turn, and Born of Vengence all next week? GEESH!
Dang it Tessa! LOL!
*snort*
😛
*does victory lap*
I’m being terribly naughty and checking at work *whisper yells* and you still beat me! Did you see? There’s a bully book?? *waggles eyebrows* I hate being on book buying restriction… *pout*
Next week the bully book. Well, I might read the first book first. Because, it’s the first and everyone seems to love it.
Ooooh, is it best book of the month time yet? I’ve no clue due to the awesomeness of what I read this month, but thought I’d mention it in case anyone knows. The book I’m reading now isn’t going to be it, though I do enjoy it.
And the bully is a big part of the first book. I’m sure each one can be read as a standalone but it’s the first one that shows us how much of jerk this guy really is…
See! With that, I HAVE to read the first one.
I really liked the first book… So yes, I’d agree, read that one first. Maybe I can do my taxes and then buy books again…*snort*
Last thing for a bit. I looked and five books are up as best of the month. *shakes head* I’ll get it down to one, though!
Mine is obvious. 😉
Sure! It’s best book of the month time. 🙂 (I have to look back on mine, don’t know yet)
Ditto Tessa: “King’s Cage, The Turn, and Born of Vengence all next week? GEESH!
In the meantime I’m going to look at Justice Ascending, Good Boy and Reunited (nice random selection – lol)
oh, oh, oh *jumps up and down with hand raised*
I know Maryse’s. I know. I know!
😉
LOL!!!!!!
great, I have 8 five star books in January. how am I supposed to pick? *grumble, grumble*
This is almost a toss up. So many of these moved me. But, I think I’m going to go with In the Absence of Light by Wilder, Adrienne for the #1 spot because it moved me the most.
My problem is The Hard Count by Ginger Scott is part of that list. I just finished it last night, and I have to allow myself to really absorb before saying if it’s the best. The others include Every Wrong Reason by Rachel Higginson, The Bird and the Sword by Amy Harmon, Breath of Fire by Amanda Brouchet, and Darkest Mind/ Never Fade by Alexandra Bracken. I’ll get to the last one when I get an extension cord. My tablet is so picky about how to plug it in, since it’s kind of old, but it’s the only place to get library books downloaded.
This list looks insanely good!! I too am having trouble deciding on my best book of the month as I read quite a few great ones this month! I’m not complaining though, this month I have a feeling is going to be just as good! The Bird and the Sword, A Man Called Ove, and Under a Painted Sky are my top contenders. Maryse, Stephanie Garber’s debut novel Caraval released today too. I’m reading now and am only 17% in so far but so far SO good!! The writing is really good and I’m loving the magical aspect!
Tasha, I’m reading Caraval soonish.
Been waiting for that one.
Maryse ‘ s favorite Last Hour of Gaan.
I knew it would be.
Mine is a tie between Bitter Legacy and Wolfsong.
Maryse, you’re killing me!! How am I ever supposed to read the books in my tbr list when you keep recommending new ones? I started Mists of the Serengeti last night, and of course I finished it today! Amazing! I thought I knew what I was going to read next until you released this new list! Thanks for keeping my next read a surprise since I am going to just let you pick them from now on!!
Yay Melanie!!!!!
I’m so glad you loved it too. And now, you must tell us what your next one is, once you decide. 😀
*hug*
“Mine is a tie between Bitter Legacy and Wolfsong”
Holy crap Bev. You are determined to make me read Bitter Legacy ASAP aren’t you? LOL!!!
I can’t wait, Bev! I mean, I can wait, but I’m excited! Lol I checked to see if it was loanable so I could loan to someone when I was finished bc I just know it’s gonna be fantastic and it’s pricey, but sadly it’s not. 🙁 I’m loving this world so far, I’ll keep ya updated. I’m hoping to jump into The Failing Hours next and then my February tbr read, though I’m not sure what that will be yet. What is everyone reading for their challenge read for Feb?
No silly bev, it can’t be her favorite because Maryse and I are supposed to BR The Last Hour of Gann l for the February challenge…
Oh yeah!!! That’s right Grey! I one-clicked that one…
Yes yes yes!! *Body roll and bum shuffle* <– the official Carly happy dance.
How to date a douchebag #2
Is it bad I closed the book I'm currently reading to start this? And I was just getting into it too. Oh well.
Ooooooh and I WILL start Mists of the Serengeti tomorrow as well. Maybe. If I feel brave enough
LOL Carly. I’d like to see that happy dance!
Fantastic list Maryse. Your ALERTS always make me smile. And some of the book titles up there are funny too. Shopping For A Billionaire’s Honeymoon. Paws For Love. Wives Fiancees and Sidechicks of Hotlanta. Happy Scoops…. fine books all, no doubt. But the editors/ publishers must have a giggle sometimes.
My fav books I read in January were Exaltation of Larks by Suanne Laqueur and Deep by Susan Fanetti.
My biggest disappointments of January were Love In Lingerie by Alessandra Torre and Bound By Vengeance by Cora Reilly. Neither of them anywhere near as good as other books by those authors. :-/
How to date A Douchebag was one of my favs from last year…so #2 is a definite one-click!!!
Kinda wanting a rough alpha biker at the moment though…looking at Acer…maybe…
Ohh…and my January favs were….duh, Wrecking Ball and To Have It All!!!
Oh yeah DG Wrecking Ball was up there for me too.
My favorite was On the Island by Tracey Garvis Graves. I was so surprised by this one. Totally not what I expected!
On a side note…AMY!!!! What are your thoughts on arugula and butternut squash?
Ok, Miss Picky-Pants here hardly ever has 5-star read, but I did have one in January. Yippee!!!
Some Kind of Perfect by Becca & Krista Ritchie. What can I say about this series besides a-freaking-mazing?!? This was extended epilogue and end to series of 10 books. I am so in love with these flawed and beautiful characters that it actually hurt reading last book and saying goodbye.
Oh WOW Leslie!! Now I gotta check those out!!
If anyone hasn’t read Dark Things (Tristan & Danika #1), me & R. starting buddy read tomorrow.
Whoops..I meant Bad Things. Can’t blame that on autocorrect.
Fabi, yes I am.
They are different from each other though.
It’s just with both of them the characters lived on in my head after I was done.
With Wolfsong it was the perfect time to read it. On a snowy winters night all huddled under the covers with the power out.
I was going to start Wrecking Ball but I am having an inner battle on whether to reread my Brightest Kind of Darkness series so I can finally read the final book. Especially since I’ve hounded you about it coming out!! I hate making up my own mind. I have these inner book battles. My mind is way too overwhelmed!!
I always have those Melanie! Go with your gut. It’s probably going to point you to the book you really want to read.
Alright, after much debate, The Bird and the Sword was the best of the month. It just flowed correctly, and never felt odd or rushed. Also, to keep me engaged with a mute character who isn’t speaking in italics really says something about the author’s writing ability. Everyone who recommended it… THANK YOU!
LOL Melanie. Your cute little avatar there is doing an overwhelmed face as well.
Carly should post a video of that happy dance!!! 😉
I’m reading really slow right now, usually do during the week.
On one hand it is aggravating because I have books I want to read right now. I’ve been looking forward to Caraval for awhile.
On the other hand it’s great. For a little bit every night and morning I get to visit Grasse.
When I have to slow down and stick to one book I remember what a pleasure it is, lol.
Though this doesn’t work with every book I’m sure.
I just finished Deeper/Harder. I liked it!! West….what a hot mess he was huh? Caroline…she was pretty awesome. I loved how it all turned out, even though it was a long journey (a few parts were a little slow for me) it was a good one for me!! Yay!
Yay!
I won’t be able to read much more of Caraval until tomorrow evening. I hate when you’re so into a book and dying to know what happens, but you have to wait! Drives me crazy and I’ll think about it all day too. So far, still really enjoying it! I love her descriptive writing. It’s beautiful, magical, and I almost want to say sometimes delicious. Like it makes me hungry when food words are used. Sugary beaches and what not. LOL It’s completely unique, but if I had to pick ways to describe it so far it would be a little like Alice in Wonderland, maybe some Hunger Games too. I’m loving the potential love interest. Is he a prick, really? Or is he someone else perhaps? Or maybe this guy could play in here…..?
My best of January read is My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry by Fredrick Bachman….same author as A Man Called Ove…he’s a genius.
These lists are going to be the death of me! I’m trying to resist……but I can’t!
Best book for January, The Bird and the Sword without a doubt. Biggest disappointments, Trick and Eversea.
Leslie, you have me intrigued with Some Kind of Perfect…gotta check it out!
I’m at 60% of Mists! LOVE! I don’t want to leave this world!
Oh, another book that came out on Jan 30 is Gravity by H.J. Bellus. This is the author of Royal Atlas which I loved!
Too many books, lol.
I should finish Bitter Orange tonight. But I then have Throne of Glass and Caraval. Then Wintersong comes out on the 7th. Plus want to fit in Juniper and Mist.
Yay Jean!!!! So glad you loved The Bird and the Sword!!!!!!!! NOW THE REST OF YOU SLACKERS GET TO READING! KISSES 🙂
Oh Jennifer I just read the blurb for that since I loved Ove and it looks amazing! I’m definitely adding that to my never ending list, right up there at the top!
Um, I’m scared of your recs now Ela.
I picked the Rhys Bowen for Feb first as I have read her before and enjoy her writing.
I have no idea what I’m going to read next after Mists….I have a feeling I’ll be in a book fog….and this damn book better have an HEA or I WILL FREAK OUT!!!
bev, did Ela send you that same dark read recommendation on GR?? I think she’s lost her mind! LOL!
Did anyone figure out their February Challenge read…..I have lots of choices. I think I’ll post them to the GR Group and get everyone’s opinion.
I didn’t notice if you had it posted previously, but The Anatomy of Us (WJM Book 2) by Amelia LeFay was released January 19th. Not bargained priced but was one I was waiting for. 🙂
I have no clue what y’all are talking about! My rec’s are AWESOME! This one just happens to be quite DARK and if you like dark then I highly recommend it (mind my review)
Dang, Wintersong on Feb 7 too? *faints*
I’m finally finishing a series I started. Endure, A Defy novel by Sara B Larson. Fabi, you know this book is out, right? Also went down in price to $5.99. I have the library book. 😀
I’m with Ela. Any fantasy lover needs to read The Bird and the Sword.
If I lost my mind I’d be recommending the silly books I read like:
Boy Next Door Clark, Emma (probably the worst dark read ever)
Tabula Rasa Thomas, Kitty
The Haunted Vagina Mellick III, Carlton
The Horny Leprechaun 2 King, Nikita
Alien Penetration Morgan, Yvonne (I actually kinda liked this one)
Snowballin’: I Fucked Frosty Vierge, Auralie
Listen to Tessa people!
Fallen Woman by Stephie Walls released today, I read this one as an ARC… I gave it 4.25 stars. There’s angst, but not of the traditional romance – book trope variety… Hot smut…lol, and a good plot. It checked all my boxes haha!
I’m reading Marriage Games and waiting for Maryse, *tap, tap*
Ela, don’t even get me started about Tabula Rasa!! Ugh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Some of the names of those books listed definitely made me laugh though!!
Tessa I’ve been on the fence about that one practically since it came out. I just don’t remember a lot about this trilogy. I’d have to re-read the first two before I opened the 3rd.
The beginning has the king thinking how his mom would turn his life into a fairytale. It basically was a quick synopsis of the last two books. Due to the context, it worked without being cheesy.
Seriously with Kindle First this month? I think I’m going with Duck and Hippo :-/
I was excited about it. There’s a sci-fi in the selection that has my name on it.
I figured! It’s for the best. I don’t have time to read any more books anyway!
I read your newsletter this morning. Wonderful as always! But your Feb reading schedule looks as crazy as mine.
Thanks Fabi! I love that you read it! I think there’s maybe 3 of you who do 😀
Feb isn’t too bad. I’m inhaling The Butterfly Project as I get it and then I just have a couple more sure things. I’m still shocked I managed 8 books for January! That’s crazy for me.
Holy moly, Riotous Side of Hell is the first click of February for me because DAMN!
Sooooo, I’m going to take R’s suggestion and give myself a pass three times a year and will be going with Serengeti after Bird and Sword…which I am LOVING by the way. 😀
R…I like both arugula and butternut squash, so I would definitely try them together.
Jean! We’re reading same books back to back…how good is Bird and Sword??
I made a “salad” last night that was soooooo decadent. Arugula, butternut squash spirals, goat cheese, pine nuts… I’ll send it through GR. I don’t really like BN squash so I was shocked how delish it was!
R your salad sounds AMAZING. I would eat that right now.
LOL I almost sent it to Amy Harmon 😀
THAT is funny, LOL!!
Amy, I loved Bird and the Sword, and am totally “in love” with Mists of the Serengeti….I don’t want it to end!
I am not impressed with the Kindle First books either this month….but I didn’t really look too closely at them yet. I think last month I got The Night Bird…..haven’t even gotten to that yet!
Is anyone going to read Torn Between Two by Mia Kayla? I think I need someone to hold my hand for that one….
P.S. I don’t like arugula or butternut squash….told you, I’m really picky!
R, how do I get your newsletter? I wanna read it!!
Here Jean!! 😀 https://www.robinhillwrites.com/contact.html
If it doesn’t work let me know. I was having trouble with it last month.
Yeah I didn’t think many of you guys would be down with the arugula or BN squash. I even tasted the squash before I mixed it. I like it better raw! But it needs to be cooked for the salad. BUT, mixed with the goat cheese? OMG. Heaven.
My favorite January read – oh boy! Hard to decide. It was a crazy good month. I am ALL OVER the place with reads. How to pick? September, Wrecking Ball, El Diablo, Tell the Wolves I’m Home, Mists of Serengeti, Rhapsodic? I mean seriously???So… which one is still standing out with details and feelings? Tie between September and El Diablo. One is such an amazing love story and the other is just a crazy wild. But Tell the Wolves I’m home is RIGHT THERE in front of my eyes and in my heart. All the feels and the whole story. Haven’t forgotten a thing about it. First world problems!
Now on to February challenge: PNR/Sci-Fi. Oh Boy! My favorite. I am going to overthink it, I just know.
LOL Robin…really??? “And she dream casts Josh Duhamel in every book she reads.”
What about David Gandy, Ian Somerhalder, Channing Tatum, Vin Diesel – ALL YUM
MichelleS, I’ve heard mixed reviews about El Diablo, but I really want to read that one!
R, I signed up for your newsletter! Your blog page is beautiful and really looking forward to your first book!! You must be so excited! What is the release date?
David Gandy……yum, yummy, yumilicious!!
Ian has made the rounds. So has Alexander Skarsgard, and most recently Diego Boneta. But my go to is Joshy <3 ,<3
Ooooo, how about Dusan Susnjar…..hot, hot, hot!!
Thanks Jean! I’m pushing for mid summer. I’m a little stressed about that though LOL.
Simon IS ON SALE.
BUY IT.
READ IT.
COME ON.
If you need someone to read it in advance *wink wink*, I’m here for you! LOL!
Which Simon bev???
I’ve never had goat cheese or arugula, that I know of. (Honestly all the times I’ve ordered salad at restaurants, I probably have had arugula). I love butternut squash and pine nuts. So I guess the only thing I probably would be iffy about is goat cheese.
Oh, PNR starts today? I’ll read mine after Endure, unless I need a CR between them. I sincerely hope I like mine. I love Sandra Hill, but the beginning sounded like a kid’s picture book, so I kept running from it.
SIMON VS THE HOMOSAPIENS AGENDA.
Get your oreos and settle down for a great read.
Goat cheese is super mild Tessa. It’s like lightweight feta. Arugula is super peppery and strong. I bet you can sub spinach for it though. The recipe is also in my newsletter because it was that freaking good!
Jean, I may take you up on that! Fabi reads for me too but I’ve only sent her 4 chapters so far.
Oh shoot bev, I haven’t read about that Simon…..yet……and I love oreos!
I agree with bev *throws up in mouth* read Simon!
Jean, read read read read it.
Remember you are my favorite.
R, the more you read my recs the easier it is to say.
Not sure that’s true bev!
You’ll be on here begging for me to rec you a book.
I have too many already! Oh the stress of it all *fans self*
*giggle* bev, didn’t you have a different favorite last week???
I am not a book planner, I should really take a page from Fabi and R, and be more scheduled about these things it would probably make me a more organized reader… Although IDK, I do alright LOL!
I’m gonna tackle The Last Hour of Gann this month for PNR February!
Yeah Grey, I think Leslie is her “true” favorite! bev, I’m sorry but I don’t know if I can read that one……I need some major convincing…..
I have so many choices for PNR month that I might just draw from a hat!
Ok, I bought Simon. And I haven’t even read a sample yet to see if it’s for me, I’m going off pure faith. 😉 I think right now I’m leaning towards The Passage by Justin Cronin, since I own it and it says it’s science fiction on goodreads. Or possibly Storm Front by Jim Butcher. Both of these I’ve wanted to read for so long and now I have the challenge as a push. Maybe I’ll get lucky and I can read them both. HAH, *wishful thinking*
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory! That was the other thing I was trying to put my finger on last night when I was saying a mix up of The Hunger Games/Alice in Wonderland. I knew I’d thought of something else but couldn’t think of it. Lol. Like I said, unique but I get all those feelings…
GREY – Gann! Yippee!!! I loved that crazy long book! Stick with it. You’re gonna fall in love with lizard man.
Wow, lots of one-clicks for me!!
I finished Mists today, so I guess it can’t be my January fav. A beautifully written story. Going to go with Love In Lingerie. I love anything Alessandra Torre writes!! 😉
Now to clean up and organize my tbr list. When I have so many new books I get overwhelmed with what to read first!! Also, maybe I can finally make my top ten of 2016 list. 😉
Ah crap. When Hell Freezes Over by May Sage also releases on February 7th. I’m officially overwhelmed.
Jean.
I loved it.
MichelleS loved it.
R loved it.
It won the Morris Award last year.
The Serpent king won this year which was one of my 16 favorites.
If you don’t like it I will read any book of your choosing. Except Ela ‘ s dark read. Or James Joyce cause I tried him once and right over my head.
Bev – I don’t get the hesitation with Simon…. it was really a great read. I still remember it, which is saying something. So many just POOF right out of my brain, unless they have some amazing characters, and this one did!
But bev, if I like it, will you read whatever I suggest!? Is it YA M/M because that is what’s making me hesitate. ..?
I don’t either. Maybe the YA label?
A lot of readers are not interested in that genre as a whole.
It’s hard because I want to be like, you are missing out on great writers and hours of book joy.
But then I like that genre and so am looking through that perspective.
Also, I probably get a bit defensive when people generalize it to only certain trope, tone, and protagonist. Or I feel like that is the case, lol. Like when 50 became the poster child for romance….um no. Romance is much more varied and diverse than that.
Jean, ok. But I have like 5 books lined up after my current read, so it would have to be after those. My book anxiety can’t handle any more to that line up.
I personally hesitate because of the M/M. I have no problem with it, but it’s not something that wholly interests me in reading about. I’ve read Carry On and that’s the only M/M I’ve read and I loved it and how it was written, but at first it made me nervous. I wasn’t sure how uncomfortable I would be, but they became one of my favorite couples ever. I watched Brokeback Mountain years ago and enjoyed the romance of it, but the intercourse scene made me uncomfortable too. So, I think if I did jump into a really good one, I would love it, but at the same time it’s not my favorite genre. Same for F/F or threesomes or anything like that. Although I did accidentally by one once that was a foursome and I read the whole thing through too. Lol I still get beet red when I see it in my archives.
Tasha, because it’s YA you don’t have any explicit scenes. It’s really very sweet. I hate YA but I loved it. It’s also very smart.
I have a tie for my favorite read of January. I can’t decide between Wolfsong and An Exaltation of Larks.
For our February challenge I’m going to see if I can finish Jeaniene Frost’s Night Huntress series. I’m currently reading book 5.
Cheryl- I haven’t made my top 10 list for 2016 yet either. 😉
Tasha, if you liked Carry On I think you’d like and be comfortable with Simon.
I have yet to get into f/f either. I have one in my tbr, The Miseducation of Cameron Post.
It got a lot of buzz on a blog I read and then I think it was banned. So I was like ok I’m buying it. I didn’t know schools still did that.
I really need to read it, believe it is to be made into a movie, as they all are now a days, lol.
Oh and I think we all have books we blush at. Lol.
Ok, I like smart! And sweet sometimes, I’m gonna give it a go soon!
Yes, it was Game Misconduct by Bianca Sommerland. It was actually pretty good, too. I still remember most of it even though it was years ago when I read it. And I’ve read loads of naughty books, but something about that felt so forbidden.
Started reading Good Boy, but maybe it’s my mood (and I’ll try again) but the H was just over-the-top and a dufus. And Becoming Mrs. Lockwood got me when she said she was a senior in high school. The Do-Over seems cute, but I hate books where the MC’s don’t see each other for YEARS. *scratches head- am I pms’ing, I thought I was too old for that?!*
Now I’m starting The Monday Girl that was in my tbr and book 2 was just released today. Strong h that so far I am really liking.
Hiya! I finished Mists of the Serengeti after your review Maryse, and it was amazing! I loved the immersion in a completely different world so I’m starting the man who won the world form your list. It is set in in korea and by the reviews so far so many people love it. I am a fan of Korean dramas so I am excited to dive into this one. Has anyone else checked this out? I would love a reading buddy for this…
I love Korean horror, Grace, but I need to check this book out properly!!! Have you started it yet?
No Cheryl it’s not just you. I felt the same about Good Boy. H was totally OTT and the ‘humour’ didn’t appeal to me. I didn’t like what the h revealed about her own dodgy sexual history either. I prefer my characters to be a bit more grown-up. And I’m just not a fan of OTT obsessively over-planned weddings in books or anywhere else. I have deleted the sample.
I read 5 off my tbr in January. I felt good until I compared it to new. :/
I have like 4 pre orders coming, I wonder if I can refrain from buying the rest of the month knowing that?
Hey, Grace. That sounds like an interesting read with an unusual time and setting. Keep us updated.
Tasha- My Grandmother Said to Tell You She’s Sorry is amazing…F Bachman is so imaginative…had some of the same feels I got while reading Rainbow Rowel books…completely different plot but the feels were similar. I also read Kids of Appetite in January also a great read and different story, and the Bird and Sword and All the Ugly and Wonderful Things…January was a great book month.
Hiya Bev, I’ve started it already and will update you soon. Its 5am here… the very best time to dive into a new book. Also I’m using this as an excuse to skip morning workout. I’ll let you know how it goes.
FLT
“Nolan hated mirrors.” Working It by Christine d’Abo
I’m working my way through a few ARCs that release next week. This one is M/M romance. Releases Feb 6.
FLT:
“I had the strangest shiver of premonition rock my body the first time I heard Tristan’s voice”
Bad Things by R.K. Lilley
OMG Leslie…my heart and tummy just did a synchronized somersault when I read your first line!!! 😀
FLT
“She was so small.” ~ The Bird and the Sword by Amy Harmon
I’m almost finished but I have loved this one from the beginning!
Grace…I love it when I wake up earlier than I need to because it gives me time to read before starting my day. 😉 Reading at 5 am is GREAT!
Mine did too!
FLT:
My father taught me that the only way too ensure your subject’s loyalty is to make them fear you.
Ensure by Sara B Larson
Jennifer, it sounds like we have really similar tastes, you have me excited to read it! I’m so happy someone else read Kids of Appetite too! If I’d had read it sooner I would have said it was my favorite book last year, hands down. It’s definitely one of my all time favorites. I’m gonna have to check out All the Ugly and Wonderful Things too. I know there was a lot of hype about it a while back, but I don’t remember what it was about.
Tasha, fairly taboo due to h’s age, lots of drug references, hard childhood upbringing and mental illness, but a beautiful, emotional, moving story. I loved it…but I don’t mind taboo.
Ditto Leslie’s FLT
Oh and I read Kids of Appetite because to your favorites list…great pic!
FLT:
“Donald Bartholomew Williams, get your ass back here now!” One Grave at a Time by Jeaniene Frost Night Huntress Book 6
Oh man, reading Leslie’s FLT made my tummy flip and my heart flutter, I am sooo jealous!
My FLT…
“The morning my life changed was no different than any other.” Marriage Games by CD Reiss
R, you’re reading it as well?!?
*twirls around with head back and arms out*
One of the VERY few series I would consider re-reading.
Amy…our babies, they’re growing up so fast…LOL!
Now we just need some ladies to read Badger so we can re-live that one, too. 😉
LOL Grey!! I literally snorted and choked on my coffee! 😛
That is the only series I DID re-read! Loved and so jealous of those first-timers!
I haven’t been able to start it yet. Rum happened last night at the ole bowling alley 🙁
Which means I’m worthless to write today so may as well read!! 😀
Hope you saved some of that rum ’cause you’re gonna need it for this ride. 😉
And Vodka…..
No, I’m fairly certain I drank all of the rum last night. ALL OF IT. Oy vey. Nine pin bowling on “blind” night is a serious endeavor, folks. And now…McDonalds. Mama needs some french fries and an ice cream cone.
McDonald’s….perfect hangover food! By the way R, I loved your newsletter!
Thanks Jean! It’s hard writing a newsletter when you don’t actually have news 😀 I have to get creative.
I’m so glad Tessa and Amy read The Bird and the Sword. It’s such a unique and perfect fantasy romance.
Jean, I love R’s newsletter. I look forward to it every month.
R.! No writing?! I’m confiscating the Rum. 😉
Yes, vodka would be good. 😉
Just finished The Bird and The Sword and OMG loved it!!! *squeals and happy dances*
You are so right, Fabi. SO right!
Confiscating the rum?!? The horror, that is my favorite alcohol!
Amy, wasn’t it amazing and unforgettable?!?! Now, you have to read Mists….which is just as amazing! I freaking loved it!
I have so many ARCS from NetGalley….I really need to stop requesting them, but it’s become an obsession and if my request is declined, I take it personally!
Fabi, now I’ll be looking forward to her newsletter too!
😀 Yay, someone read my rec! Lol, now I’ll have to read yours! 😉
“that is my favorite alcohol!”
mine too, therefore the confiscation 😉
I’m starting it now, Jean!
Well, in a few hours on my lunch break. Later shifts are great when you’re trying to finish up a book. 😉
Haha Fabi, good point!
Yay Amy!
I got on net netgalley just so I could request Taylor Jenkins Reid’s new book. Lol like I’ll get that one.
I LOVE Taylor Jenkins Reid. Just sayin’ 🙂
I’m sometimes surprised by what gets approved and what gets declined. I did get All in by Emma Scott there and that was a shocker!
Sounds like I need netgalley in my life…lol
Yes Grey, you do! I think I’ve gotten over 100 books already and some haven’t even come out yet.
Everyone has me so excited over Tristan & Danika story! I’m at 29% and nothing has happened yet. I’m bracing for it though.
FLT: “You look beautiful, Alex, Lucas whispered from behind me, his voice broken and torn.” Complicate Me, by M. Robinson.
Ah, Leslie. You’re at the “Sweet” part. You have to love their relationship before it totally guts you and flays you alive.
Don’t kill me – Tristan and Danika was just a 4 star for me – I think – I sweat I can’t remember a THING from that book. Am I voted off the island now? Maybe it was timing? I need to go read a blurb so I can remember what it was about!
Nope. MichelleS stays on the island with us! ‘memmmmmberrrr that time when I didn’t love a book? But you guys kept me. 🙂
I’ll add my two cents that NetGalley IS awesome…but I do find myself stressed out if I don’t get my ARCs read quick enough. I feel like I “have” to read…and reading shouldn’t be that way, at least for me. But it ain’t like I’m gonna stop doing it, LOL
And how is it that Robin is sending out a newsletter and I know nothing about it…I shall remedy that immediately!!
Lisa, that’s how I feel with NetGalley and I don’t think I’ll ever catch up because I’m constantly buying new books at the same time! But does that stop me….no….I just can’t resist hitting that “Request” button.
Okay, all this Tristan and Danika talk had me all nostalgic and then THIS popped up on my iPhone playlist:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=hn3wJ1_1Zsg
HOLY MOLY!! The lyrics, the music, the video…it totally brings up all the feels from those books! I’ve had it on repeat and I keep watching that video while I supposed to be working. I love it!
Amy is that song gonna make me cry? I haven’t clicked the link yet. I’m ascared. You always find the crying songs.
And then…THEN!! I’m driving in he highway and what soars over my car?
A Bald Eagle.
(Those who have read Bird and Sword will understand why it made me happy ;))
Maryse that’s because we’re packpackpack…
R, R, R …….. ‘Rum happened last night’ *shakes head, laughing*.
FLT: Kyle Castillo Paxton did not wear a watch, but he knew exactly what time it was, precisely where on earth’s longitude and latitude co-ordinates (42.280826 by 83.743038) he stood and how far he was from his home (2418.4 miles).
From Juniper Smoke by Sadia Ash
Ha ha. Intrigued much? It’s a CR and I’m enjoying it.
Nope Maryse, not a crying song or video…just an emotion-eliciting one. Total T&D feels. 😉
Maryse I was just about to leave an update for bev and Amy. I’m 70% in Maryse, and there are tears in my eyes. I hardly ever cry for books but this one is tearing my heart apart. It is not sad but it feels so real. I’ve never read anything like this. It’s a completely different world. And its not horror Maryse, its romance. It’s just so different, perhaps its because of the setting and I’m already quiet familiar with the korean culture. I need to finish it then I’ll come back with full feedback. Right now i feel disoriented.
Making me VERY happy, Grace! It sounds so different.
—> “You have to love their relationship before it totally guts you and flays you alive.” And then they back up and run you over(repeatedly) and totally gut and flay you again. The feels of that series. Devastatingly beautiful.
FLT:
“To those who would love me — I offer you a warning.” The Monday Girl (The Girl Duet Book 1) by Julie Johnson. Strong h who just got her big acting break starring in a movie that reminds me of On The Island.
Gotta admit, Juniper Smoke has my attention!
I like the look of Monday Girl.
Great, Amy’s adding new songs to T&D. Remember, when the last one came out, she had us all listening to All of Me by John Legend. Which, yeah, that song summed it up beautifully.
YOU GUYS ARE SCARING ME!!!
Not sure I can take the gutting, flaying, getting run over, repeat.
*runs and hides in blankie fort*
It’s sooooooooooo good! And totally not mine! It was on the box of squash! Do you want me to email you the recipe?
Leslie, don’t be. It’s heart-breaking at points, yes. But just.. trust me that you’ll love it.
Yes, beware of being run over.
Amy is driving the car.
*sticks tongue out at bev*
Leslie, it’s SO worth all it will put you through!!
Speaking of squash, I made some not long ago where all I did was dice some butternut squash and toss it with some olive oil, salt, and chopped fresh rosemary before baking it in the oven and oh MAN it was yummy!!
I’ll definitely have to try that Amy! I’m not a big fan of the taste of BN squash, but I love how pretty it looks cooked and I bet the rosemary is perfect to cut the taste!
For my YA book buddies To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before is on sale.
This one is a bit more on the sweet side but I really liked it, loved Lara Jean the heroine.
It is a first book of three, though was going to end on the second book. So happy a third is coming out. However, not cliff hanger endings at all.
Jan, I’m really enjoying The Monday Girl so far.
Grey- The Marriage Games and Separation Games were one of my fav January reads. Angsty, crazy, steamy read.
“Right now i feel disoriented.” <——- Sure sign of a great read, Grace! 😀
Thanks bev…I've seen that one before but never clicked on it. Sale? Click!!
Amy….you caught that it’s a sweet read, right?
Tasha, I want to know all the answers in Caraval, lol.
Finished Endure and… it was alright. It seemed as if some secrets were kept WAY too long and some stubbornness was done solely to make the story last longer. *shrugs* Oh well.
Ok. February’s PNR challenge for me is Kiss of Pride by Sandra Hill. Normally I love this author but GAH! She’s writing so childishly and the jokes are bad without the humor of cheesy/campy. Just… bad jokes. I hope it changes soon.
Okay, I’m done Maryse, and bev. I finished and didn’t know what to say, so I slept on it, and I still don’t know what to say. So I’ll say this. You know that feeling when you read an amazing story and then you go about your daily life but then at random moments the characters pop into your mind and you feel this pull in your heart as though you are suffering from love, or heartbreak or a deep dissatisfaction with your life.. I don’t know how to explain this but I hope you understand. It was amazing, and it made me think, and i don’t know how much to say lest I spoil you. But its different in that there are full blown sword fights, and executions and of course the setting makes you feel like you’re in medieval Korea. But there is also a budding romance that feels like a bomb waiting to explode. I’ll stop here. Ask whatever questions you want… lol. xo
Grace, that sounds so good, I added it. 🙂 Amy, that’s the only way we’ve ever eaten butternut squash and we do it all the time in the summer. But, Robin’s salad sounds amazing, is it warm too? I think I’d like it with some grilled pork chops! Bev, I’m so jealous you finished! How was it as a whole? I’m still about halfway, I didn’t read at all yesterday.
Happy Friday, everyone! Just letting you know I’m still around. When I’m in my editing cave, the days pass, and before I realize it, it’s been 3 or 4 days since I’ve checked in. But I should get a break soon, so hopefully I can hang out here this weekend. I was so busy that I even completely missed FLT!
Oh, and I got moved back up to 1A, so I’m first in line for the next heart that matches–I’ll keep you posted!
Tasha and Amy, it really is. Reading Mists of the Serengeti and then this all in one week has drained me. I have no more emotions left to torture untill next week. I’ll be reading through the recs for what to read next. Someone try this Korean novel.. I need someone to talk to about it.
He Nay!
And to the rest of you a big hrmpfft! Why the heck did no one tell ME about Tristian and Danika? Huh? You tell Leslie…
Which makes me wonder if I was just forgotten or if something irredeemable is going to happen and you all really just had my back… Neither option sounds good :-/
He is the new hey for anyone wondering #trendsetting
We did mention it. Lol If you look at Amy’s favorite of all times, it’s on there. 😀
My Feb PNR pick is getting better. It should just stick with her POV. Her POV doesn’t have bad jokes in it.
Oh, T & D is total Marmy. Nothing to fear, though, cause I’m the one who recommended it to everyone.
I probably saw it being talked about but seriously with that title and cover I didn’t clue in. I’m not sure I’ve seen Amy’s all time list! I’ll check it out.
I love marmy. I’m scared because I’ve barely started and I’m completely invested in both characters. And totally pissed I wrote my book boyfriend blog BEFORE reading this because Tristian is super high on my list!!
Yeah, we’ve talked about Tristan and Danika A LOT! Trying to get people to read it!
I’d never even heard of it until you guys started talking to Leslie about it and I think that was on GR. I probably wasn’t paying attention though. There are TONS of books on here I’m not familiar with and unless it’s a direct rec, it probably flies over me.
Tristan and Danika…..one of my favorite series ever! You DO get very invested in them…..I loved them both, and then the rollercoaster ride begins!! Wait until you get to the next 2 books! *sigh* I’m not sure how you missed it R…..we all love it and like I said, this is the only series I’ve read twice!
Nay, best of luck to you and keep us updated!
Did everyone pick their February challenge book? I don’t know why I’m hesitating……oh yeah I do, because I can’t make up my mind I have so many to choose from!
Keep us updated, Nay!! *gentle snuggle*
R…if you think you’re invested now, just wait. Think you know how rough it’s going to be? Yeah, you’re going to wish it were that easy. 😉 But holy HELL those two are worth the beautifully heartbreaking journey.
Jean, I haven’t picked mine either but it’s going to be hard to do so no matter what after Bird and the Sword.
And all this T&D talk has had me thinking of them nonstop since yesterday. And that song up there… *sigh* Play, repeat, play, repeat, play…
Thanks, everyone! I keep feeling like the boy who cried wolf, lol. I know it’ll happen soon!
My feb book is that monster book that I STILL can’t remember the name of. Grey told me to read it and it’s by Amelia Hutchins. I DO know that!
Oh, and Amy is completely right about T&D!!!
The books is: Playing with Monsters–had to look it up…again!
R, no one was keeping secrets from you, I promise! Hee hee
I knew about Tristan & Danika as R.K. Lilley wrote Up in the Air series (one of my all time faves) and my GR buds were gushing over T&D when it came out . I never read it back then because the heartbreak scared me away.
I do recall T&D’s cameo in Up in the Air though.
Leslie, OMG. You read the Up in the Air series and you’re scared of T and D? I trusted it because I read UinA and knew the characters HAD to come back from that!
Their cameo in UItA is what made me crazy anxious to read about them!!
SAME HERE!
The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh is on sale for 1.99 from 9.99 today! I read this one a couple years ago and raved about it. It’s a beautifully written story about a foster child, now a woman, who had a rough start in life and her gift with the meanings of flowers and how she touches other’s lives in that way.
