Swathi is looking for these and I gotta say, I’m with her. THOSE are my favorite paranormal books, too.
Nothing better than a freaked-out human heroine and that slow burn as she discovers her Hero is a bad-ass protector and all the other amazing things that comes with a paranormal Hero. What a Hero indeed. *swoooooon*
Of course, what immediately comes to mind is Bella in Twilight (at least for the first few books, anyway – so I totally indulged in that feeling with her).
Also a few of the heroines (that end up becoming a Brother’s “shellan”) in Black Dagger Brotherhood (like Jane, and Mary <— one of my FAVORITES!!). I would have almost said Beth in the first book, but that’s right – she was half vampire but didn’t know it yet – but she still freaked out REALLy good!!
She asks:
Hi Maryse,
I absolutely love your blog and these days, I’m pretty much a daily visitor searching for more books.
I was hoping you could help me with some new recommendations.
I am looking for paranormal romance with a human heroine. (Preferably not a heroine who has latent powers or secretly a witch/shifter/whatever). I love it when a mundane girl suddenly discovers a whole new paranormal world and finds love there. There’s something satisfying about MCs overcoming obstacles and treading through hardships for a HEA with their significant other. Bonus points if it’s a slow burn.
Looking forward 🙂
-Swathi.
Maryse: Yay Swathi!!! Those are MY favorite paranormal books too!!!! Love when in the Black Dagger Brotherhood, the “shellan” is human and is freaked out at first. YAY!!! P.S. Here’s everything I’ve ever written on these books (including a ton of reviews). 😀
I know a few in the Christine Feehan Carpathian series (or maybe all of them) were human heroines. Those were some good freak outs too. P.S. Here are some of my book reviews of her vampires. 😉
Okay so… any specific recommendations for Swathi (and me)?
Swathi: I found one recently. It’s called “My commander”. The heroine is a human and the hero is a bear shifter. The book as funny as hell.
Lisa: On to My Commander and insanely giggling…. and annoying my grumpy husband who’s trying to watch football….reading about the SWAT team approach to buying tampons!! So silly…but entertaining.
Tessa: My Commander… *giggles insanely* The tampon scene is funny but prior, the description? ROFL Awesome.
Lauren: My Commander (Bewitched & Bewildered Book 1) by Alanea Alder …Such a great book….and hilarious too!
Heather: The Schasm Series by Shari J. Ryan and The Providence Series by Jamie McGuire are some of my favorites!
Jen: If you enjoy a mind trip, Shari Ryan’s the Schasm series… Will have your mind spinning in all the good ways.
Remi: I have to say my most favorite book boyfriend is Jared from Jamie McGuire Providence book series. Who doesn’t want your boyfriend to be a perfect angel?
Samantha: Jared from The Providence Series will forever be my favorite book boyfriend!!!!
Mandy: The Cruel Prince by Holly Black. SO good!
Grey: Okay seriously, I know I’m really late to the party but, The Cruel Prince and The Wicked King…OMG! ❤️ We are talking 5 star love for both of them, for real…
Ash: try Cruel Prince by Holly Black. … Awesome writing and unique story!!
Tessa: if you love those Holly Black, you have to read Cruel Prince, unless a bully is something you detest. 🙂
Amber: Vampires in America DB D.b. Reynolds. Great series!!
Mony: I’m reading the Vampires in America series. Absolutely loved Raphael (Book #1) – sharp writing, smart PI Cynthia Leighton, and everything you could want in a gorgeous Vampire lord. 5★. Looking forward to reading more books in the series – Duncan, who takes up residence in Washington, D.C.; and Lucifer in Montreal (cause it’s close to my home LOL). …I think Raphael (Vampires In America series) may have spoiled things for other vamp books.
Shreya: “Vampires In America”-by DB Reynolds…….its a great series based on 8 Vampire lords who control North America….(4 books are out till date)…strong characters, great chemistry between the leads, full of passion, thrill & action……..all in all a yummy package!!!! 😀
give it a shot….!!!! 😀Nicole: D.B. Reynolds Vampires in America series (this series is SERIOUSLY GOOD, like BDB in many regards, and not mentioned often enough in my opinion!)
Autumn: Eternal Rider Larissa Ione, many Lyndsay Sands books. Milly Taiden’s paranormal dating agency books. Sons of Sangue Series by Patricia Rasey.
Kristina: I Love Larissa Ione her books are simply A.MAZ.ING!!!
Melinda: I absolutely love Larissa Ione as an author and a person. I read everything she writes.
Rosalyn: I love the way Ms. Sands story telling is evolving, the intimate portion is great. But, I love it even more when there is great conversations between the characters and each individual background history is revealed; this history revealed make them the way they are, and bring these character’s to life! I just love it! …In-addition Ms. Sands story telling is starting to become to (me), action fill, thrilling with twist and turns.
Laura: What about lynsay sands whole argeneau series? They are all funny and almost always have unrequited love!!
Maryse: I LOVED Lynsay Sands when I was back in my strictly vampire romance days!! Here are all my book reviews of her books. 😀

Serena: Nightwalker (Undeadly Secrets Book 1) by Aaron L Speer
Ida: If you like a combination of romance, mystery, and paranormal try Taylor Nash’s novels – Wicked Moon, The Apparition, and Uncharted Depths all available on Amazon.
Brook: Layla by Colleen Hoover
Michele G: I read Layla early (a few months ago)… I LOVED it!! I enjoy that CoHo writes a variety of genres. This one is kind of a paranormal romance. It’s twisty and fun…although there were times I was angry with the characters and wanted to throw my ereader (I resisted of course). I read it in a day…it was addictive!
Maryse: I absolutely loved it, too! Here’s my Book Review – Layla by Colleen Hoover
Nancy: Soul Reckoning by Nancy E. Polin
Kathy: The story of son by J.R. Ward
