I discovered your blog this week in the midst of an intensive book search, and I’ve been enjoying your posts. This is for your reader request ‘help me find that book please’ column.
“My mom keeps remembering this romantic suspense novel she read almost 30 years ago, and I’d really like to find it for her.
Plot, according to what my mom can remember:
After the heroine marries the hero and move to his house, they grow distant from each other. She doesn’t know it’s because he’s hiding an insane twin brother somewhere else in the house. The evil twin falls in love with the heroine, and when she does finally meet him face-to-face, she thinks it’s her husband.
When she realizes it isn’t, she rejects the evil twin.

The rejection makes the evil twin furious, and with the help of a maid he’s seduced, he tries to run away with or kill the heroine (by throwing her over a cliff?)…or something like that?
And while all this is happening, the manor also catches on fire (maybe?),

the maid saves the heroine, and the evil twin dies. When the heroine wakes up, she thinks the evil twin is the one who is alive and that her husband, the good twin, perished in the manor…but it all ends happily.
Other details: Mom would have read this book in the early 90s, and she thinks it was one of the gothic romances so popular in the 1970s, but maybe a bit less ‘pulpy’ and more along the lines of Barbara Michaels/Elizabeth Peters or Mary Stewart. Possibly a Regency-esque gothic, possibly not.
Anyone have any idea what this might be? I’ve spent three days searching for it and I’m coming up dry. Thanks in advance!”
