A Discovery of Witches: A Novel
I am loving this. It’s true. I think I’m finally there at only 30-something percent in. But.
I wasn’t at first. Nope. Not. At. All. The first ohhh… 20% of the book is both interesting and dull at the exact same time. The story is being set up, the characters are trying to come to life, but I wasn’t feeling a thing but distracted.
I was all… “OMG, please everyone stop taaaalking around me, I can’t concentrate.”
I was all… “Dogs! Stop wiggling!! Settle down! I can’t concentrate!”
I was all… “Turn down the TV, or change it to something soothing that I can ignore. I can’t concentrate!!”
Anything and everything was pulling me away from the book. I wanted a snack. *Woops*, the book went down and off I went. “Jackass” was on, and *woops*, the iPad went into sleep mode without my noticing. I remembered I needed to brush my teeth before bed, and *woops*, off I went to tend to my hygiene, along with a deep facial and moisturizing, to go along with it. I started getting sleepy, and *woops*. I went to sleep.
People. When I am into a book, I forget to eat. I forget to shower. I forget to sleep. My husband could be watching the best loudest craziest movie at full blast, and if I’m into a book, I don’t even notice it.
This was NOT the case. And had I not known about all of the rave reviews, the insistence that THIS is one of THE BEST BOOKS EVER, I would have put it down and found a rock star to entertain me. I mean, I have plenty of them in my wish list to choose from.
But because so many of you were adamant, and because I read quite a few reviews where readers were literally contemplating “Matthew Clairmont’s” every like and dislike in your daily routine activities (I read somewhere how one reader was grocery shopping and saw smoked salmon and thought to herself, “Matthew would like that”)… I mean any vampire hero that could obsess so many of you to that extent, is one that I want to obsess over too!
So I forged on. And right about at the 22% mark, I started paying attention. Started smiling. And now. I think I’m *there*. It took me everything to pull me away to let you guys know. I had all sorts of blogging projects today. Now all I wanna do is read. That’s a good sign.
So… I think I just might shirk some of my (most of my?) responsibilities and indulge in reading all day 😉
Oh! BTW – do any of you already have a “Matthew” in mind? Links to pictures please. I found one that I like very much, but it might be fun to see what else is out there.
It took me what seemed like weeks to get fully into, when it really only took a few days of picking up and putting down….but!!!! It got waaaaaaay better about 60% in, and it was a fantastic read! Loved it!
realllllY????? I started this book but never finished because it just bored me….oh my, now I have to go back and read it!
LOL!!
Welllll…. it got real good (at least held my attention nicely) and then about almost the halfway point, it tried to make me go to sleep again with Alchemy lessons, a bit of Darwin etc etc… LOL!
So I got bored again, whined about it on Facebook (but at least, I figured, I was getting smarter even if I was a bit bored…) and THEN!
It got REAL good again (I’m at 60-something percent in) so I’m anxious to get back to it this evening. Nice and intense right where I’m at!
But now I get why the reviews for this book are all over the place. Thousands of reviews, a HUGE phenomenon it seems, so many BEST BOOK EVER reviews, and many “meh” reviews.
I get it now, but I think I’m going to be one of the “I LOVED it” reviews.
I have a feeling, anyway 😉
