Hero
Looks like this is “Dark Week” for me. I dunno how that happens sometimes, ’cause right now I could use a dose of swooooon and giggles and bossy-but-sweet alpha male. But it looks like that book I’ve been waiting on has just gone live on Amazon, so I can’t resist. Remember that one I mentioned a week or so ago? Where he’s a known “hero”, but by the blurb, it sounds like he kidnaps someone?
Yep. That one. I read this synopsis about a month or two ago, and had a total blurb-jolt. And then… author sent me a copy. *bites nails*
Gah!! I was soooo in the mood for normal “alpha-male romance” but… you know me and these dark temptations. *crosses fingers that I’ll love it* Actually, it’s been mentioned, (below) that it’s not that dark. Okay, that’s good. I could use a bit of “less-dark” right now, reading wise.
Calvin Parish
They call me Hero.
I defend.
I protect.
I ask for nothing in return, and that makes me good.
Doesn’t it?That which makes me the ultimate predator also feeds dark impulses I’ve learned to control—until I bring her too close. For years I’ve watched her from afar, but what started out as duty has become obsession.
Cataline Ford
I work hard.
I play by the rules.
I’m content.
My scars are quiet and invisible, and that keeps me hidden.
Doesn’t it?One fateful walk home, I’m taken by someone I didn’t know I should fear. Captive and afraid, nobody will tell me why I’m confined to this hauntingly beautiful mansion. I’m given everything; I have nothing. He takes what he needs from me, and for that I hate him. But I might have loved him once.
And just because you’re reading this doesn’t mean I survive him.
*eeeeeep!!!!* That blurb gets me every time. So while my chest is aching for super-intense, butterfly inducing romance, there’s that bad-girl bit of me that’s just tooooo tempted to read this next. *slaps hands* Bad Maryse!! You’re playing with fire again!! 😉
Hehe. I’m not the only bad girl in the bunch. *phew* Here are some comments from fellow readers that have read it…
Feifei: As for HERO, I’m really interested in seeing what you think! It’s pretty erotic lol 😉 Oh I didn’t think Hero was dark at all; it’s more erotica and suspense than anything 🙂
Nessa: SOOOOOO good Maryse!!
Amy: This one does look good!
Ann: i’m in the middle of it and it’s great!
Alyssa: I need to not let myself one click things!!!! I am still on Book 4 of outlander and oops?????? Click.
Maryse: LOL Alyssa!! 😛
So is anyone reading it? Quite the modern day “bodice ripper”. Whoa.
I just 1-clicked it Maryse! I am intrigued!
I am reading it now Maryse I am at about 80% I don’t really think this is all that dark. Imagine if Batman kidnapped you. I don’t think I would be fighting it I would have signed up for it. 🙂
Okay I’m going to discuss a bit of my thoughts on the book (I’m at 50% right now) so while these aren’t full-on spoilers, for some readers that like to be surprised as they uncover every detail (like me) it might be too much info, so skip this comment below…

Shanda… I know!! I’ve been thinking… a good mix of superhero-human/Dexter. LOL!!! But he’s a bit er…. rape-y. 😯 Gah! I hate using that word when he might potentially be “part-hero” (I guess I’ll find out more once I read on), but… just sayin’…
I know those are his dark urges and I think that’s really that factor that makes this one dark, even if it’s not as dark as some from our reading past.
So i’m in halfway. I’ve been really enjoying it up to now, but I’m needing a break from the bodice ripping I think. Of course there are no bodices here, but you get the idea… 😉
Ok, Maryse….I’m in!!. Just one-clicked. My first “dark read”…wish me luck 🙂
Maryse, are you liking it more than Her Master’s Courtesan….because I am just scared of that book (but I kinda want to read it too…heehee)!
One clicked last night Maryse but right now on second book of Fae Chronicles. Trying to stay focused. Xoxo.
Jean: Ummm… hrmmm. Yes I think so, but that might be ’cause I’m a bit “dark’d” out right now. LOL. This one is darkish (due to the kidnapping circumstances, and he’s got some serious dark urges). Like I said…a la “Dexter”. And I’m not crushing on him… yet. He’s so distant and cold that I think this lack of “crush” at this point is on purpose.
They are very different in that this one, he’s potentially “good” (I’m not going to say for sure, as I’m only halfway), and “Her Master’s Courtesan”, well, he’s just a total deviant psychopath. No remorse, no emotion (at least for a certain portion of it).
But… the sex scenes, no matter what dark-read I’m reading, always squig me out. Even this one, although tamer in darkness, than “Master’s”.
I read ’em for the psychological thriller aspect, and always have that weird hope that emotion and maybe even healing might shine through, but yep. I’m gonna need a happy, go-lucky rom-com, or a Kristen Ashley sweet/bossy alpha for SURE after this.
P.S. Master’s just got pulled from Amazon due to the content.
Linda and Wendy: Keep in touch. I wanna know what you think of this one. 😛
I “get” you which is scary in itself! Haha! No, they pulled Master’s??? Shoot, I didn’t get to 1-click it yet….WTH am I going to do now?!?!?!
Oh, I just bought it at B&N which I never do….usually use Kindle, but I didn’t want to take the chance of them pulling it before I got to it!! Thanks for the heads-up!
🙂 Good luck scaredy cat (and you have every reason to be). LOL!!! 😉
Maryse-hey thank you for your book reviews very helpful & I always look forward to your book lists each week:):) I didn’t think I was going to do it but I did,now I can’t be a chicken ugh—– Her Masters’ you get me? I’m reading hero right now very interesting!! 😉
Oh Nikki I get you!!! Boy, do I get you. 😉
I may need to borrow the manatee from you or Amy! Haha!
This one does look good! I may just have to read it! And I’m very bummed that Her Master’s Courtesan was pulled….I was debating on it, but now many need to see if someone that has it can lend it??!!
Just finished Hero and the novella. So good…
Just finished Hero last night. This wasn’t as dark as Her Masters BUT it is takes some interesting turnss and some of the scenes, I kept thinking “no, no, don’t do it” but he did. He he 🙂 This must me “dark read” week, who’s complaining? Not this gal! I’m loving all these unique stories!
I had planned on reading this after Courtesan, but now…Google the “nope octopus.” That would be me now when I see a dark read. At least for a little while. 😉
And Jean, you *will* need the manatee when you read HMC. Maryse called it and was right. You’ll have to wait to borrow it though – he’s recovering from when I bit him while reading HMC. I wish I was joking. *sigh*
LOL!! I love it!
I totally loved Hero. Make sure to read, Keep Me after. It is thier story continued after Hero.
