Good morning!
Wow! The Suicide King looks awesome. I almost would have put it on my tbr based on the title and cover alone! Now I need to peruse this huge list (because I haven’t put nearly enough books on my tbr lately). 😉
I’m finished listening to Never Let You Go by Chevy Stevens, and although the mystery was decent (and the suspense was even better), one of the narrators sounded like a robotic valley girl (there are many reviews about it, which I didn’t read beforehand); however, the main narrator was really good, so I tolerated it. I’m still giving it 4 stars–I won’t ding the author for the horrible narrator; I’m guessing she had no choice.
Now I’m listening to One of Us is Lying by Karen McManus (another one whose title and cover reeled me in). It’s YA, which isn’t usually my thing, but it’s a Breakfast Club-y murder mystery, so I’m enjoying it so far.
I remember listening to a Laurell K. Hamilton Anita Blake audiobook (wayyyyyyyyy back many years ago when I first started blogging) and the narrator was so monotonous, it sounded like I was in class with the most boring teacher, and I was nodding off… I DNF’d it and read the book instead.
Hrmm… maybe it was THAT book that made me scared of fiction audiobooks in general…?
Once you have a bad experience with a narrator, it can definitely affect your interest in audio books. I stopped listening for over a year because I got tired of spending so much money and getting terrible narration. Things are different now and an expensive Audible subscription isn’t the only game in town. Thank goodness!
A narrator can really make or break an audiobook. There are so many different nuisances that go into that medium. Inflections matter, pauses matter, variation of characters, being humorous but also having gravitas for certain parts…I could go on. If I’ve already read the book and they sound nothing like the character that makes a difference for me. I’ve had to turn off audiobooks or return them because they were just not done well or the narrator was essentially ruining the book for me. I’m glad Audible now has their Audible Escape program, I’ve gotten to listen to books I may not have tried and I’ve also been disappointed by ones I was looking forward to – either way I’ve gotten my money’s worth out it (To date I have listened to 444 audiobooks through it and that doesn’t include relistens, I keep track on goodreads). And there’s other places to get audiobook deals too – I’m glad audiobooks are getting more traction.
444? 😳 Wow! I’m in the Escape program, but I can’t stand listening to sexy romances unless the voices are true to the gender. Very few narrators can make me forget that it’s a woman doing the hero’s voice and vice versa. But if I’m listening to a mystery that has some romance in it, I do okay. That’s what I focus on with the Escape program. There are also some urban fantasies I can handle. I loved the Graveyard Queen series by Amanda Stevens!
I wish the one I just finished was in the Escape program so that you could listen to the voice I was talking about above. I couldn’t believe that the director/producer/editor–anyone! let it get by like that.
Oooo, The Graveyard Series is one of the ones I want to listen to next. I listen while I’m working that’s how I’m able to get through so many (and also anytime I’m doing yard work or stuff around the house). There’s a few people at work that listen to audiobooks (some of them found out that I listen to them and they go ‘I should do that!’).
I usually listen to a sample if I haven’t heard the narrator before. Most of the time I can tell if I’ll be able to listen to them….most of the time. However sometimes a story just isn’t going to work for me no matter how good the narrator is or isn’t.
But I do think the same thing that you said when it’s really bad! ‘HOW did anyone think that putting this out there was a good idea!?!?’ Sometimes you say ‘did anyone even listen to this before they put it out for sale?’
Exactly! And so many people on Audible have complained about how horrible the voice is.
I gobbled up the Graveyard Queen series! I love the Southern Gothic feel it has to it! I wish I could find another like it. Do you listen to any of the thrillers in the Escape program? If so, are there any you’ve loved? I also think I could also handle listening to Taylor Jenkins Reid type audio books. I noticed there are 3 in the program, but those are the exact 3 of hers that I’ve read.
I don’t think I’ve listened to any thrillers in the package but I have listened to a few suspense ones. I really liked the Web Of Lies series by Kathleen Brooks. I also liked the Search and Rescue series by Katie Ruggle.
I’ll check those out. Thanks!
Gooooooooood morning!!!
I just finished Becoming Calder/Finding Eden by Mia Sheridan and guess what??? I LOVED IT!!!!!! It was super intense, emotional, angsty, swoony and book hangover inducing. I think most of you would love it too!
Maybe I haven’t lost my reading mojo after all???
Yay, Leslie! So glad you haven’t lost your mojo! Btw, I’m still reading We Were Here, and so far so good. I’m hoping to finish it today, so I’ll let you know what I think.
We Were Here sounds so familiar. I can’t think of it off hand. 🤔
YAY LESLIE!!!!! Yes!!!! It might not be reading mojo after all. 😉
Yay!! Congrats!
Good morning! First day to explore here! I’m not up yet, but I suspect it’ll be very soon. I’m tired already, but excited. And I’m bringing along Never Have I Ever in case I get a chance to sit down. *snort*
Tasha, where are you? I cant remember.
Panama City Beach. The heat is bearable, the water is perfect temp, clear, beautiful. Not too crowded. Off to a good start!
Ooooh nice! It looks beautiful there. Too bad you didnt go further south and visit Maryse!!! 😜
YES!!!!! WHAT ABOUT VISITING ME!!????
I would love to! I’m afraid I’d be awkward in person. Or distracted. I’ve got a load of kiddos with me, we’d be annoying. Truly, they’re awful. LOL! They’d be bored and distracted, hyper and whiney. The middle is so overstimulated here, he’s driving me crazy already. Maybe in 5 years, they’ll mature a bit and not be so needy. Remember how I’m also a baby and can’t drive myself here? We’re a package deal. My Mom is coming for a few days too later in the week! I can’t wait for another helping hand.
Tasha – we go to PCB at least once a summer since it is only a 3 1/2 hour drive. Even have an invite to go down for the weekend, just not sure if we will make it due to a possible ball game. Ugh! Crossing fingers that game will be a no go.
Love getting my toes in that sugar sand!!
I love it here! I’m sending the kids back so I can enjoy it for myself. Lol! I’m kidding, sort of. It’s so much work, but we’re having tons of fun. We did the pirate cruise thing. It’s for the kids mostly, but oh my gosh, SO MUCH FUN! So well done, it was a blast. I think for the kid at heart as well. And St Andrews today, raccoons nearly got my daughter. I’ve never laughed so hard, scared the crap out of us. I want to pack in Shell Island, Camp Helen, a natural spring, and Gulf World yet. We’ve only ate out once yet, so I want to do that too. Not much. 😂😂
It sounds like a blast, Tasha!!! Well deserved, too, my friend.
Good for you, Tasha. 😊 I absolutely LOVE Florida. That’s one of the places we’re considering relocating to when hubby retires from the military in a few years.
Enjoy your well-earned vacation!
YES. PLEASE.
PLEASE!!!!
PLEASE.
Please
please. ?
I’m working on it, my friend! And then we can meet halfway and giggle it up like a couple of middle schoolers. 😀
Oh man, DG…am I ever craving Cajun food now. Mmmmm…
If you like Cajun food, Dat Cajun place on Thomas Drive is great. Has shrimp dishes and such. We tried that for the first time about a month ago. Needless to say, there are a ton of places to eat.
We never did get to cruise on the pirate ship but definitely looks cool.
Again, lack of glitter! 😛 So I bring you glitter, brought to you by fairies!
I already got Brave the Tempest because I ADORE that series, and I will get Tales and Darkness. I love the storyline in each book. However, that Dirty, Lovely, Broken…Oooooooh!
YAY Tessa!!!! Thank you!! 😀
It’s us!! I think I even see bev frolicking in there somewhere…
Big chop time. New salon.
Makes me a bit nervous. 🤞
Good luck Bev!
bev–did you get it cut?
Ooooh, big chop! How did it turn out?
I wanna know too!!!
Sorry Tessa, it’s been a rough week.
Because I’ve been slacking here is…
😁
Whoa, Watch Me by Ker Dukey and K. Webster looks…intriguing….🙈
Friendly PSA. Tomorrow is the Pick-for-Me drawing, please remember to put your name down if you want to be in it…it’s tons of fun!
bev, I wanna see the new haircut!!
It’s all good. We got glitter by fairies. When am I not happy about that? 😀
I love glitter-fairies!
So I finished Dirty, Lovely, Broken and OMG. It’s definitely dark and soooo good. Not gonna lie, hot too. 😀 Seriously though, dark readers will love this. I thought it’d be good, but it was really good.
Now, I’m torn. Dark Legacy came out. Also, Villain’s Academy 3. BOTH BOOKS ARE BULLY BOOKS AND SUPER GOOD! Gah! 😀
I thought of you the moment I saw it, Tessa!!! Good to know it was as good as that cover makes it look!!! 😀
I just came off of a KU deal on July 27th, just for the heck of it I clicked on the trial and it let me have 3 more months for free.
Oh wow Sandi!! That’s so cool!!

This one…THIS ONE! I’m loving it. LOVING it. The h is a hot freaking mess, and I’m relishing the anxiety it’s causing me with not knowing where this is heading. It’s reminiscent of Hausfrau…I’ve been wanting one like this for a long while! 😀
Sounds great, Amy! I just put it on my tbr.
So I finished both the Villain Academy book, Sinister Wizards and Darkest Legacy. Both were good, but since Darkest was the trilogy end, it had more excitement and at the end, I was grinning BIG. Still grinning. LOVED IT!
