It’s bev’s turn and just as I expected, there are SO many new-to-us books on her list. She’s our book-adventurer. Totally into our genre… and yet totally into so many others, too! And when I look ’em up… OUR genre anyway!!!
Not only did she gives us a tidbit of why she loved it, but also her favorite quote from each!
She says:
“These were my favorite books this year. This may sound weird but I can not say these are all 5 star books as I usually do not rate my reads. For the most part I am a mood reader and this is a list of the books that were the right book for the right mood at the right time. These books made me laugh, swoon, think and yes maybe even cry. These are just listed in the order that I read them.
1. Kings Rising: Book Three of the Captive Prince Trilogy by C.S. Pacat <— I waited so long for this conclusion and it was so worth it.
Damen said to Nikandros, “Take the fort.”
2. The Last Hour of Gann by R. Lee Smith <— A completely immersive experience.
“Just so,” he agreed, and gave her a tap on the top of her freakish, furry head.
3. The Kraken King (Iron Seas Book 4) by MelJean Brook <— This was like being a part of an old fashioned action adventure movie.
She’d only wanted to a see a little danger from a distance. Instead she’d fallen straight into the clutches of the Kraken King.
4. The Darkest Part of the Forest by Holly Black <— Dark forest, magic, and fairies, who could ask for more?
Down a path worn into the woods, past a stream and a hollowed-out log full of pill bugs and termites, was a glass coffin. It rested right on the ground, and in it slept a boy with horns on his head and ears as pointed as knives.
5. Isla and the Happily Ever After by Stephanie Perkins <— This book is so swoony, I just found it very romantic. Plus, Paris, sigh.
It’s midnight, it’s sweltering, and I might be high on vicoden, but that guy -that guy right over there-that’s him.
The him.
6. Once Upon a Rose (La Vie en Roses Series Book 1) by Laura Florand <— Whimsical with a great meet cute.
“I like to call her Bouclettes,” he said grandly. It seemed possible as a nickname. All those curls.
7. I’ll Meet You There by Heather Demetrios <— Such a great read that I should have read sooner. Really, try this book.
My blood was carbonated, and I was awake and young and alive, and screw everything because this moment was mine.
8. Undecided by Juliana Keyes. This book was so fun. I loved how she played with the tropes.
“Don’t encourage him,” Kellan pleads, dragging Crosbie from the room.
“No encouragement necessary,”Crosbie says. Just before he lets Kellan win the tug of war he adds, “We’ll see you.”
That would be a first, I think, watching them go.
9. The Hating Game: A Novel by Sally Thorne <— Witty banter and great chemistry. I want more contemporary romance like this.
“I love your hair today,” Danny tells me and I duck my head flattered. It’s the correct thing to say to me. I’m ridiculously vain about my hair. My conditioner is probably worth more pure ounce than cocaine.
10. Tell the Truth, Shame the Devil by Melina Marchetta <— I need somebody else to read this book. It is a wonderful book filled with complex characters you will not want to leave.
“I don’t want to hit you when your down , Fionn,” Bish said,”but I think your generation is going to be known for being the least useful at anything except ticking likes on Facebook.”
“Cruel words, sir,” Fionn mocked. “Only this morning the nurse let me look at my Facebook page on her iPhone. I was feeling heartened by the hundred and fifty likes for the words ‘Get well soon'”.
11. Marked In Flesh (A Novel of the Others Book 4) by Anne Bishop <— Tessa, I read it!
“We will give you some time to decide to decide how much human the terra indigene will keep.”
12. The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner. What is it Amy says? Oh my heart this book.
“Seasons change. Rivers flow to the sea. Earth circles the sun and the moon circles the earth. Everything whirring and spinning toward something. And I get to be a part of it for a little while, the way I get to watch a train for a minute or two, and then it’s gone.”
Take a look at MORE of bev’s favorites!!
Thanks for the great little teaser quotes bev. An intriguing list. I’ve only read 1, 2, 6 and 8. Trying not to add more to my tbr, but I’m very tempted by some of these. And I like Melina Marchetti so I guess I have to add that to the list 😀
Great list!
Goodness, aren’t they pretty up there.
Maybe I should start collecting certain books like R does.
Than You for posting this, Maryse.
Jan, yes please add it to the list. I can’t wait to see your list as we seem to have pretty similar taste. So my tbr will be growing too.
Thanks Kandace. 🙂
Oooh, I forgot about Once Upon a Rose…that looks good. Gotta bump it up the TBR mountain.
Oh yeah Leslie. You should try Laura Florand. My favs of hers are The Chocolate Heart and The Chocolate Touch, but this one is lovely as well. Hey bev, I just looked on amazon to check Laura Florand and the 3rd book of the Once Upon A Rose series, called A Crown Of Bitter Orange, is coming out in Jan 2017 Woo-hoo. *click*
Lovely romantic CRs set in Paris and/or the French countryside, with hot Frenchmen and lots of beautiful food and flowers. What’s not to love?
She has an unique style, it’s fun. I really need to delve more into her catalog.
Just so everyone knows, I always wonder why I haven’t read Bev’s recs. She recommended a book that isn’t even out yet, and it’s my most anticipated book now for 2017.
YEAH! You liked Marked in Flesh. So much happened, right? And stuff I’ve been dying to see. Best though, is towards the end… Aroooo! That had me laughing so hard it was so cute.
I loved Hating Game. MelJean Brook is one of those authors I keep meaning to read, and for some reason haven’t yet.
The Aroo, lol. So funny but also scary.
Wintersong….can’t wait. That cover.
Another great diverse list Bev. You were my inspiration for reading Rainbow Rowell…thanks for your list…your recs are above my usual price range but I’m intrigued!
Great diverse list a Bev! You were my inspiration/ instigator for reading Rainbow Rowell…love Carry On. Most of your recs are out of my usual price range but I am intrigued.
Rainbow Rowell love her writing.
They are on the expensive side, I was lucky that many of them I picked up on sale.
This year one of my resolutions is to start using my library again.
I’ve only read 2 from your list bev! I love your diversity and recommendations!
I’ve read three of them and have 2 more in my tbr. It’s kind of funny, when you rec a book, I think hmm not really my thing, then when I actually read one of your recs, I’m all OMG SO SO SO GOOD. You figure I’d learn my lesson by now and read all you recs. :-/ Thanks for sharing your favs here and throughout the year.
Thanks Jean and Fabi.
Gaan had been on my radar but not sure I would of tackled it if the Michelles and you, Fabi hadn’t been raving about it. So I owe you guys for that read.
It cracks me up when any of you are hesitant to read one of my recs in this room full of Marmies, lol.
I should just add all of them to my TBR list because you always surprise me Bev! The Kraken King is calling out to me. Tell me I don’t have to start with book one to get to this book 4??? And the Serpent King….. I guess I’m a girl who likes her men beastly! HA!
I am so surprised by your list, Bev! There’s a little of EVERYTHING there. AWESOME>
Yes do that, MichelleS. 😉
I didn’t read The Kraken King in order, in fact the Iron Duke has been in my tbr pile for a few years. This year.
And I have read none of these…wow, will definitely check these out! LOVED how you threw out a teaser from each books!
Aside from some over which I’ve dug my heels in and not read (*cough* Simon *cough*), I have absolutely LOVED so many of your recs, bev. In fact, Undecided is on my top ten for this year!
The only other one from your list I’ve read is I’ll Meet You There, and it was really good.
*sits on hands to keep from hugging bev*
DG….none?
Undecided, definitely. It seems to be a favorite across the board here.
Amy, you know you are breaking Simon ‘ s heart? He’d hug you. If you ever read it you have to be completely and brutally honest, k? Cause R and I disagree over this. (About Fabi too).
Bev..I know …crazy, right?!? Absolutely none. So maybe I need to expand my reading selections? Looking through them I do see a couple that peek my interest, especially when you use words like swoony and fairies!!!
I’ve read The Hating Game and Undecided! And The Last Hour of Gann I think is going to be one of my challenge books!
bev, I love your list! In fact, I think I may read Marked in Flesh as one of my challenge reads too! You’re hitting all my buttons today! Thank you for an awesome list!
And, of course, no post would be complete without a shoutout to our lovely hostess Maryse, *muah!*
DG, both of those are great. I know Isla is YA but very romantic.
Grey, Yes to Gann and MiF. Jealous that you get to read them for the first time.
I love all the little snippets! I’ve only read 2 up there- The Hating Game and Undecided. Tell the Truth, Shame the Devil and I’ll Meet You There are both on my library wait list and I see several I need to take a closer look at!
If your library has them that would be so awesome.
Let me know what you think. I especially want someone else to read To Tell the Truth, Shame the Devil.
Bev, I’ve only read Undecided and have to say I loved it too! Your other fav’s have me curious! 🙂
