Xandory’s (er… I mean TESSA’s) Top Books for 2016
Marked In Flesh (A Novel of the Others Book 4) by Anne Bishop <— This was the action we’d all hope to see. Yet, also the heart of the characters was there, making the actions seem real and tense. Also, Aroooo!
A Court of Mist and Fury (A Court of Thorns and Roses Book 2) by Sarah J Maas <— I had to choose between this and her other series. However, unlike Empire, Court kept me guessing, not knowing what’s happening next, or what I should be rooting for. In the end, this is her best book to date.
Forget (Changing Colors Book 1) and Blur (Changing Colors Book 2) by NA Alcorn <— I love my rock star, but I’m picky with them as well. This one just jerked my emotions everywhere. Not so much Forget, but Blur. Forget sets it up, but Blur just played with my emotions in all sorts of great ways.
Born of Legend: (The League: Nemesis Rising Series Book 9) by Sherrilyn Kenyon <— I know! A sci-fi, not fantasy, on my list. However, it’s always about the characters, and Sherrilyn Kenyon has outdone herself with this one.
Wait for It by Mariana Zapata <— Slooooow Burn, with side characters that you absolutely fall for. Pure classic Zapata
A Promise of Fire (The Kingmaker Chronicles Book 1) by Amanda Bouchet <— A different storyline that kept me intrigued. Griffin and Cat are hot, but it’s more of how she lives and who she is that kept me reading.
Punk 57 by Penelope Douglas <— The story is about who these characters are and what they do to “survive” in high school. However, it’s not typical in any way. What normally happens doesn’t here.
Playing with Monsters by Amelia Hutchins <— This is dark and exciting. This does take place in the Fae world, but Lucian is no Ryder. He’s darker, and the present and his past combine in this story to deliver something that took my breath away.
Kick, Push & Coast Duet: Includes Kick, Push and Coast by Jay McLean <— My heart! *clutches* This is a sweet story told by a teenage single dad and a girl who is a recluse. It’s emotional and raw, but so many sweet moments too. Also, you’ll adore his kid.
The Trials of Apollo, Book One: The Hidden Oracle by Rick Riordan <— Yep, a kid’s book. This is the Percy Jackson’s world, but it’s Apollo’s story. He’s stuck as a human and the humor in this is off the chart. The action is fun, but Apollo and his kids kept me on my toes. It’s different than his others with more humor and a bit of an adult thought process that isn’t normally there in his books.

Alright, I did really good at reducing to ten, but this book won’t leave my brain alone.
Lady Midnight (The Dark Artifices Book 1) by Cassandra Clare <— Yeah, it’s a given by who the author is that I’m going to love it, but this one is more special to me. There is a kid in it with autism, though it’s never said throughout the story. The thing that makes it awesome is it’s real without trying to prove itself. Also, the H in this deserves a shout out. A kid raising his family without anyone realizing it just makes me love the story more. Anyone who loves Cassandra Clare should read this.

Great list! 6 of your picks are on my TBR list…I either haven’t gotten to them yet but know they will be great (Wait for It, Punk 57), or they are series I’m waiting to be complete before diving back in or continuing (Others, Thorns and Roses, and Kingmaker). Thanks for sharing.

Hey, I’ve been curious, do we need to be finished with the previous series before reading Lady Midnight? I know it’s a spinoff and I’m still a book or away from finishing the earlier one.
It introduces the characters in Lady Midnight and the backstory. I don’t think it’s needed, just is nice to know right off. They are randomly sprinkled throughout the series, but in the last book of the series is where you really get to know them.
WAIT! Yes, you have to read all of Clary’s and Jace’s story or you will have spoilers in this series.

I think Alcorn wrote the Infamous series also. Those books were a hoot! I have never laughed so much. She’s a great author!

Court of Mist and Fury was AWESOME! I love both of her series, but this was a stand out, agreed. Kingmaker Chronicles Book 1 was on my favorite list too. I am such a sucker for Fantasy novels!
I am going to have to give Lady Midnight a try. I am a total sucker for books that include characters who have autism. Even if it’s just hinted at.
You’ll really like it. The hints are how he thinks and how the H handles his little brother. I thought it was done quite intelligently. Also, I want the fidget the H made for him. 😀

Punk 57, Wait for it and Kick, Push & Coast are definitely some of my top top top reads. Although I just remembered I technically haven’t finished Coast yet.*Sigh* It’s still gonna be a fave, I can tell. I’d love to be able to experience reading those for the first time again. Especially Wait For It. That gave me the jelly belly jiggles like crazy.

Great list Tessa, I must admit, I had quite the giggle reading Maryse’s story of trying to figure out who your alter-ego was. I’ve read Punk 57, Playing with Monsters, Forget and Blur. and all were top reads for me as well. I have a several others on my TBR…I know we have very similar tastes, so they’re definitely getting a boost to the top. Thank you!!
