Okay my turn! I was tagged by Sally for the FB Book game, and it was just way too cool, so I thought I’d bring it here for all of us to play, too. Most of you already know my favorites, but I think you’ll be surprised at a few of my “other” favorites from my reading past.
It goes like this:
“In your status, list 10 books that have stayed with you in some way. Don’t take more than a few minutes and do not think too hard. They do not have to be the “right” books or great works of literature, just ones that have affected you in some way. Tag 10 friends including me so I can see your list…”
That is… if you’re on Facebook and want to carry on there. Or just post them here in the comments!
Here are mine (I’m cheating a little with some series) they are in no particular order EXCEPT the first book which affected me GREATLY!
1.) Beautiful Disaster: A Novel by Jamie McGuire <— my favorite book, because… Travis. That’s why. He is still my #1 “human” guy, and pretty much my number one book-guy of all time. Other than Zsadist, that is. 😉 All I know is that when I re-read Beautiful Disaster, I get the exact same reaction each time! It never fails. Travis puts me in a week-long love-fog. My Book Review.
2.) Twilight (The Twilight Saga Book 1) by Stephenie Meyer <— because it set me on this non-stop reading path that makes me happier than anything ever! Once I read this one, I couldn’t get enough books. I was DYING to find that feeling all over again, and boy have I ever!! My Book Review.
3.) Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret by Judy Blume <— Because it’s the book I read over and over again as a kid. I rarely re-read books (even back then) but this one never got boring for me. I LOVED it.
4.) Fifty Shades of Grey (#1 & #2) by E.L. James <— Because OMG, Christian Grey, that’s why. Seriously. I had never read anything like that before and I was blown away. Especially during a certain part in book #2. I book-died! My Book Review (#1) and Book Review (#2)
5.) Comfort Food by @Kitty Thomas <— because I had never read anything like THAT before and I squirreled it away in my “dark-closet” ’cause I couldn’t believe I could connect to something that dark. I was terrified. Of him. And my connection to that story. WHOA is all I could feel from start to finish. My first personal case of Stockholm syndrome. That stuff is powerful! My Book Review.
6.) Born in Ice: The Born In Trilogy #2 by Nora Roberts <— Back before I was a regular romance reader, this was the first book I ever read where I actually fell in love with the hero. I mean swoooooning, love fog, haze and months worth of loving *him*. I had read romances before, but this one GOT me good. I never knew we could actually “fall” for a fictional character before. HE was my very first.
7.) Lover Awakened (Black Dagger Brotherhood, Book 3): A Novel Of The Black Dagger Brotherhood by J.R. Ward <— my first “forever book-boyfriend”. Zsadist will always be my number one #1. I couldn’t believe my emotional LUCK reading that book. He knocked Edward right out of the ballpark, and I was hooked onto the more hardcore vampires for good! Mind you, Eric from the Sookie Stackhouse, and Bones from the Night Huntress series pretty much lead me to harder-core vampires (that I fell in love with), but Z? He ruled my reading world! Knocked ’em ALL out of the ball park, for me. My Book Review.
8.) Thoughtless by S.C. Stephens <— closest I ever came to falling in love as hard as I fell for Travis. Kellan and Travis were my #1’s for the longest time. Still are. This was THAT book that took me on the same level of angst and emotional connection that Beautiful Disaster took me on. I was on SUCH a search for another that gave me that same “Beautiful Disaster” rush, and when I read this one, I started my review with ” I FOUND IT!!! I fouuuuuuuunnnndd it!!!!” I was ecstatic! My Book Review.
9.) The Host: A Novel by Stephanie Meyer <— hardest I ever cried during a book. To the point my husband had to take it away from me and force me to watch a funny movie. It worked! But the minute I picked the book back up, I immediately started sobbing again. I was an absolute wreck, and usually I sob in secret, but there was NO way I could control that enough for my husband not to notice. 😉 In fact, he was in ANOTHER room altogether, but yeah… he had to come out to see what all that noise was. It was me. My Book Review.
10.) Rock Me (Ross Siblings Book 2) by Cherrie Lynn <— This is the book that officially switched me from strictly paranormal into this new “indie/new adult/tattooed bad boy world”. I read this one even BEFORE Beautiful Disaster and for awhile, I couldn’t even choose between Brian and Travis. And y’all KNOW how much I love Travis… so Brian must have been SOMETHING BIG for me. Just sayin’ 😛 In fact, I felt like apologizing to Brian when I finally chose Travis. *sigh* Brian is just THAT awesome. That book is just that romantically (emotionally) intense. My Book Review.
And a few honorable mentions:
11.) Stephen King’s “The Long Walk” <— what a nightmare!!! I mean, they had to *poop* while walking… just to stay alive!!! Or they’d get shot!!! GAH!
12.) The Heroin Diaries: A Year in the Life of a Shattered Rock Star by Nikki Sixx <— I used to be a strictly horror/autobiography kind of girl (before I discovered romance) and this one was ABSOLUTELY fascinating!!! Wow… Nikki kind of scared me once upon a time, but after this book, *whooooo*. He was my #1 bad boy book-hero of all time, but he was real. But that was before I discovered “fictional bad boys”. LOL!
13.) The Long Hard Road Out of Hell by Marilyn Manson <—- Eeeeeep!! He used to scare me big time, too (I mean… come on, right!??) LOL! But I couldn’t help but be fascinated… and I LOVED his story. And his music.
Now you go! 😀

@ Michelle loved Written in Red. I was living there long after I closed the book. I wonder if we can convince Maryse to give it a whirl some time.
I am gonna have some FUN playing in your book-lists!!! I mean if THESE are your choices, they MUST be good. Or have some serious impact. YAY ME!

Is Written in Red a standalone?
Maryse, I was surprised that there are many in your list I’ve never heard of before.
I’ll add my list when I get home or in the morning but I bet no one will recognize mine because 1. I’m new to this genre and 2. I’ve been gobbling up books for over 30 years.
Written in Red is the first book of a newer series by Anne Bishop that just sucked me in to this completely unique world. It’s my favorite paranormal read this year hands down!
@ Maryse no not a stand alone. So far 2 out and 1 comes out in march that might be the last. They do not end with cliff hangers, but , oh how to say? You know when bigger story lines carry over.
My Honorable Mention I can not forget the Kleypas. Pretty much any LK historical.
I just realized I’ve read 200 books in the last 5 months. So about 35 years of reading….Hmmm Maybe I need an intervention
Bev – there’s actually five books planned so far in the series according to Bishop’s website which imo is not enough!
OMG. Ok here goes

Twilight
Beautiful Disaster

Thoughtless
Consequences. All of them

that’s what I did bev but my fingers wouldn’t stop typing and when I finally forced myself to “just stop” I felt exactly like what you described – a betrayal – of amazing authors’ amazing works that changed my life
I much prefer Maryse’s method of a list of lists. Sooo much better to do it that way.

So many of you mention Lover Awakened which I love but Lover at Last is the one that had me rereading. I think I read it 3-4 times. Of course, there really isn’t one of that’s not great. But this one is the only I’ve re-read.
Fabi, now you reminded me of the BDB series too! Loved Lover Awakened the most because of Z but I also loved Lover Enshrined with Phury which surprised me!

Gosh, this list shows my age. (I read Vampire Diaries when it came out! Lol). I’ve always loved romance novels, even as a kid. Though, Skye O’Malley was such an OMG, especially at 14. That stuck with me for some very obvious reasons, if you read it. Thankfully, I had my sister to go to to ask a TON of questions while reading the series.
Ha! Bruce, love it.
He beat wimpy Todd any day! 😀
I was reading through others (didn’t want to be in influenced) and I can’t believe I forgot Harry Potter! So that whole series is #11. Especially 3.

Oh but Jean, when the boys finally got together in Lover at Last, after all the lead in from the other books, it was just explosive. M/M at its best imh…how can you beat two alphas? Try and Take came close but I didn’t have the investment yet in those characters as I did with the BDB boys. And yes, all the subplots got a bit annoying, but the main attraction in Lover at Last was spectacular.
Aaahhhh! When I think about the plane and the various misunderstandings and the outfits and the…that does it — gotta go reread it again. Will be a perfect escape after TTM. The he’ll with my TBR . I need a break with an old favorite.

I’ve gotten some good recs from this list – but I think you need another similar version — a top 5 books that have stayed with you this year!
I think these would be my entries for those that won’t leave me in 2014 (so far) —
-Black Lies – I so thought I had it figured out & then there was so much more!
-Play – because I love Mal. I’ll read all the sequels just for more Mal.
-Carnage 2: The Story of Me: just gah – such a good, angsty ending for this series
-Mud Vein – wasn’t my fav but I still think about it
-Driven trilogy – who knew I had such a thing for playboy race car drivers? *fans self*
Maybe it needs to be a top 10 for this year so far because I had a hard time not listing the Tristan & Danika series, Needing Moore series, Frenched, Monster in his Eyes…

I was never an avid reader until I found R L Stine in 5th grade and immediately leaped to Stephen King. My mom introduced me to Nora Roberts when I was 12 (an extremely young age, I know, but my love for reading just exploded after that.
Island of the Blue Dolphins –
Time Cat –
Cry of the Were Cat – R L Stine
Pet Semetary – Stephen King
Dance Upon the Air – Nora Roberts
Night Play – Sherrilyn Kenyon
Iron Kissed – Patricia Briggs
Dark Lover – J R Ward
Any Which Way but Dead – Kim Harrison
Undead and Unwed – Maryjanice Davidson
This definitely isn’t in a particular order. Night Play introduced me to the paranormal romance genre and is one of my go to books whenever I’m between books or need a happy cry (only we can understand what that means :P). All of these books have changed my life in one way or another and I hope you all can take a look and find a new book/series/book-boyfriend to love 🙂
So my ten faves are!
This man
Fifty shades
Untouchable
Forever trilogy
Captivated in the dark
Driven trilogy
Crossfire
Thoughtless
Filthy beautiful
Fearsom
Great great books!!!!!
Out of curiosity i’m currently reading Outlander because I saw the tv series last week and fell instantly in love with the story so I figured if the film version is this good then the book must be out of this world and I’m not disappointed at all.
I’ve laughed, cried, been scared out of my wits and im just half way through!! Brilliant story telling, these characters will stay with me for a long long time. 7 star read for me!
I could not agree more Marion. It’s one of the most beautifully written stories I’ve ever read. I’m now starting the fourth book and it has not lost any of it’s integrity what-so-ever. I just love it (too)!
Teri the actors they chose to play Jamie & Claire on the small screen are PERFECT! They got a bona fide Scotsman in the lead role complete with the red hair and blue eyes and hes gorgeous!!!! I love that in most aspects they 99% stuck to the written version.
I’m on to book two!

I am purposely leaving off my favorites that are liked by almost everyone, i.e., Outlander and The Bronze Horseman, etc. What I’m listing here are my favorites that aren’t on any of the lists above (at least I don’t think they are). Please, oh please, check these out. You won’t be sorry — I promise. Now, on to the list (in no order — that’d be too hard to do).
1. Ice Queen & Mirror of My Soul by Joey Hill (there were tears people, actual tears and I hardly ever CRY!)
2. The Man I Love & Give Me Your Answer True by Suanne Laqueur (I discovered this author this year. If you add anything to your list, please add these 2 books. Even the book titles give me a bit of the shivers…
3. The Kane Trilogy by Stylo Fantome (this one is dark and kinda crazy, but kept me turning those pages…)
4. The Siren by Tiffany Reisz (for those of you into BDSM. Holy s*it!)
5. Crimson Kiss (this is the first in the trilogy) by Trisha Baker. If you can find this gem, you’d better grab on to it. Wait until you get a load of Simon. He is the meanest vampire SOB that I’ve ever met (yet, I sorta kept rooting for him. There must be something wrong with me).
6. Never the Face by Ariel Sands — so much raw, human emotion. A bit shocking really…
7. The Missing Link by J. M. Sevilla — he’s an assassin. ’nuff said!
8. The Maker’s Song Series by Adrian Phoenix. Um, I think I bit off all of my nails while I was reading this excellent paranormal series.
9. Good Girl Gone Bad and Skin by Karin Tabke.
10. Seize Me by Crystal Spears — about a 1% MC club. This series makes the Son’s of Anarchy look like high schoolers.
I LOVE these lists!!! Keep ’em coming. 😀
Ok this is a list that covers a lot of decades since I have been reading for a lot of them ::laughing::
1. Shadow touch by Marjorie Lou. A dirk and Steele novel. Paranormal.
2 twilight because I have probably read it more times the my years alive ::laughing::
3 Doms dungeon by cherise Sinclair one of her few solo stories though I hope she will expand on it some.
4. Club shadowlands also by cherise Sinclair – club shadowlands series.
5. Something new – Cameron Dane – part of the fostered series ménage
6. Lover revealed – Jr. Ward as much as I loved the other guys there was just something about butch I can never really resist.
7. Warriors Woman – Johanna Lindsay – have loved this one since I was a teenager enough that it has stood the test of time.
8. Harper hall trilogy by Anne McCaffrey – also older and I really can’t choose one of the three since they seem to be the same book but the Master Harper and Melanie are probably two of my favorite characters of all time.
9. Rejar – Dara joy – simply because she was able to meld the mischievousness of the cat and the I tenseness of an alpha male in one body and make it yummy.
Of this list all of them minus the first one can be taken in any order of preference. The first is my ultimate favorite
It was so hard to limit it to ten because I have re-read many classics too!
1. Black Swan & Moss Rose – Day Taylor
2. Love’s Tender Fury & Dare to Love – Jennifer Wilde
3.The Thorn Birds – Colleen McCullough
4. Gone With the Wind – Margaret Mitchell
5. Flowers In the Attic Series – V.C. Andrews
6. Outlander Series – Diana Gabaldon
7. The Women of the Otherworld Series – Kelley Armstrong (made me fall in love with paranormal books)
8. Twilight – Stephanie Meyer
9. Atlas Shrugged – Ayn Rand
10.Sinners On Tour Series – Olivia Cunning (erotica – read after Fifty Shades which I loved but these I would read again too before Shades)

If I Stay by Gayle Foreman
The Fever series by Karen Marie Moning
The Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon
The Fellowship of the Rings series by J. R. R. Tolkien
Watership Down by Richard Adams

All of the In Death by J. D. Robb
Starship Troopers by Robert Heinlein
The Stand by Stephen King
The Flinx series by Alan Dean Foster
Only discovered this site recently. Lots of new books here for me to check out. Can’t wait! Thanks so much for sharing, everyone. Here are some of my favs you might like to try.
Kiss of Snow – Nalini Singh (Psy-changeling series, paranormal) This one is Hawke and Sienna’s story. Hawke is the ultimate alpha male. Whew! He doesn’t want to want Sienna, but now she’s all grown-up …
Cry Wolf – Patricia Briggs – Alpha and Omega series Book 1, paranormal. Charles and Anna are a great pairing. Oh yeah, and Charles is super hot…
Motorcycle Man – Kirsten Ashley. Tack Allen has to be one of her best ever alpha male heroes. (Seriously – who doesn’t love KA?)
The Shell Seekers – Rosamunde Pilcher. An oldie but still a goodie. Still makes me cry when Olivia finds the poetry book and the letters.
These Old Shades – Georgette Heyer. Yeah, read her to death when I was a teenager. This one is still my fave. First published in 1926. Unbelievable. I re-read it recently out of curiosity, and it’s still got it. Super romantic story. Who needs explicit sex in a book, when one look can say it all? Ah, Justin Alastair. (Swoon). GH is a legend.
Kulti – Mariana Zapata. A recent find for me – saw it praised on this website. (Thanks Maryse and gang). Loved this slow build story of two soccer stars. (And I don’t even watch soccer – what’s with that?) A definite re-read for me. Wall of Winnipeg was great too.
Beautiful Player – Christina Lauren. Hanna and Will’s story. OMG. Friends to lovers, sweet geeky heroine tames the bad boy player. Definitely the best out of the Beautiful series.
The Turning Point – Freya North. Loved, loved this slow build book. Still reeling. Older guy and older woman, both with children and baggage, from different continents, find ways to make their relationship work. Beautiful. You must read this book, all the way through to the very last page!
Heartless – Mary Balogh. Gorgeous Georgian romance with emotionally damaged hero redeemed by the love of a good woman. (Sigh) Luke and Anna’s relationship is built beautifully and convincingly. These characters are real to me. A go-to comfort book. (Balogh’s Irresistible is also an old fave with many re-reads. I’m seriously in love with Nathaniel Gascoigne.)
A Woman Scorned – Liz Carlyle. (Regency era) Loved this and all of her early books. (Sadly her recent efforts have gone off IMO.) This book is one of her best. Captain Cole Amherst. Decent, honourable, upstanding ex-soldier (and super hottie) falls for a femme fatale whose past is under a cloud. (But is she really as wicked as everyone thinks???)
YAY!! Thank you SO much for this list, Jan! I’ll feature it, soon. 😀
Oh ya, Jan130! You have several listed that I have not heard of before and I’m excited to check out. Thanks for posting the list!
