2020 BREAKING NEWS UPDATE!!! This series has had an image upgrade!! All brand new covers and they are perfect!! π
Okay here’s the scoop. There are hints along the grapevine that the “hero” in this series has that “Travis-like” feel. I heard that, and said MINE! Bargain priced, too!! I’ll be reading these very soon.
Update: I LOVE THIS SERIES!!! My heart is beating out of my chest as I update this π (I added a full-on discussion about it PLUS all of my reviews for the books in this series, so far,Β at the end of this page).
Michelle:Β Oh WOW! I loooove these books. I couldn’t put them down, I sacrificed quite a bit of sleep to read them. Karina Halle is a genious! The way she writes just draws you in and makes you really love Perry and Dex. I was on the edge of my seat. I can’t wait for her to write more.
Maggie: Thank you for recommending this series!!! Iβve been devouring books 1-5 over the past few days and am at a loss about what to do with myself now. … I never would have picked these up if it werenβt for your reviews and the series now fits easily among my favorites.
Maryse: Oh Maggie Iβm SO thrilled!!! Iβve been getting that reaction a lot, via email and in our spoiler forum, and I know JUST what you guys mean. I too, hesitated thinking it was mostly going to be just βhorror/mysteryβ but the emotional angst ends up being the biggest part of the series. I LOVE THAT!!!!
A (very) mature young adult novel that is scary, sexy and relatΒable, filled with the superΒnatΒural and things that go bump in the night.Β A paraΒnorΒmal, superΒnatΒural jourΒney with two unlikely ghost-hunters who must batΒtle not only spirΒits but their attracΒtion to each other. Scooby Doo, this ainβt.
In a large, flaky nutΒshell, the ExperΒiΒment in TerΒror Series is an eight-part sci-fi/fantasy/horror series that revolves around a pair of ghost hunters. Well, aspirΒing ghost hunters, anyΒway. After filmΒing a creepy expeΒriΒence in her uncleβs dilapΒiΒdated lightΒhouse, 22-year old Perry Palomino becomes a YouTube and interΒnet star overnight. She attracts the attenΒtion of Dex Foray, a proΒducer and camΒeraΒman for a site that speΒcialΒizes in varΒiΒous webisodes, who conΒvinces her to be a host for a low-budget ghost huntΒing series.
The only probΒlem is, neiΒther Perry or Dex are entirely βwith itβ β I mean, they see ghosts, after all. And when the duo isnβt wrestling with their very notion of realΒity, theyβre grapΒpling with a workΒing relaΒtionΒship thatβs deep-cut with sexΒual tenΒsion. As the series moves on, leadΒing Perry and Dex to new locales and superΒnatΒural sitΒuΒaΒtions, their lives become more and more interΒtwined, where they disΒcover that ghosts arenβt the only things that can haunt them.
SERIES READING ORDER:

- Red Fox (Experiment in Terror #2)
- The Benson (Experiment in Terror #2.5)
- Dead Sky Morning (Experiment in Terror #3)
- Lying Season (Experiment in Terror #4)
- On Demon Wings (Experiment in Terror #5)
- Old Blood – A Novella (Experiment in Terror #5.5)
- The Dex-Files (Dex’s POV compilation)
- Into the Hollow (Experiment in Terror #6)
- And With Madness Comes the Light (Experiment in Terror #6.5)Β (EIT 6.5 – Dex’s POV)
- Come Alive (Experiment in Terror #7)
- Ashes to Ashes (Experiment in Terror #8)
- Dust to Dust (Experiment in Terror #9)
- VeiledΒ <— “Itβs a standalone paranormal romance and a spinoff ofΒ EIT. β¦ Yes, itβs about Ada Palomino (all grown up at eighteen, going to college, so itβs technically New Adult)β
- Ghosted: Experiment in Terror #9.5
- Came Back Haunted: Experiment in Terror #10 <— SURPRISE!!!! THIS ONE JUST WENT LIVE!!
Oh and some SUPER treats!! A few scenes from Dex’s POV including one of my favorite scenes (the bar/dancing scene). A little tidbit. I only read these after finishing book #3 and I actually think this was better for me, as it kept me in the dark about Dex’s thought process for a little longer. Made him extra mysterious which helped π However, SO glad I know what he was thinking… now. hehe.
- The Dex-Files β a Darkhouse excerpt (Dex’s POV)
- Dexβs POV β DarkΒhouse Excerpt #2
- Red Fox from Dexβs POV (Quick warning: DO NOT READ the first part of this page if you haven’t read book #4 yet. SCROLL DOWN halfway and you’ll see one called “Red Fox β Dex“) – only read this one AFTER you’ve read Red Fox.
- Stripsearch (Dex’s POV from the strip club scene from “Dead Sky Morning” book #3)
- Rebeccaβs letΒter to Perry (writΒten after Lying SeaΒson) (DO NOT READ THIS until you have read book #4 – Lying Season)
And the author answers this frequently asked question:
Is Book #8 the end? Like, really the end?
Yes and no. The end of the ExperΒiΒment in TerΒror Series. Is it the end of Perry & Dex? ProbΒaΒbly not, though the idea I have in mind for my favorite duo wonβt be realΒized for quite a numΒber of years. But it wonβt be the last youβll ever see of them.
Karina mentioned an EIT related trilogy in her recent interview here, and then also told me in regards to Dex:
“He’ll def be the POVΒ when I do the trilogy in a couple of years.”
And a conversation with my friend, Jackie, about the series, just to give you guys an even better idea of it, from my perspective (but if you want to go into the series completely surprised, then don’t read below. There are no real spoilers, but I explain the “feel” of it, and why):
Jackie: so will I like the Experiment in Terror series?
Maryse: YES u will like it. It has the same kind of tension that Barrons and MacKayla (Fever) had. You know… an ongoing series where each book has a “thing” to solve (sort of ) or at least investigate AND THEN there is huge sexual tension/romantic tension between the two main characters. But for a while … it remains tension (but it’s still so good) AND!!! “HE” is something to solve in himself. 5 books in and I’m still not sure what’s his “deal”, ya know? LOVE the series. And it’s in first person perspective – all her analyzing him, hurting, crushing, seeing, being afraid, being mad at him… very good stuff.
Jackie: oooh – sounds good. Is it para?
Maryse: yes, but only because they have a Youtube show where they ghost hunt, since she’s recently discovered she can see ghosts and so they partner up. But even that is exciting. As far as I know… they are both human.
Jackie Liliums Realm: love that …. “as far as i know”
Maryse: oh and i got lost in this one. Its been AGES since i’ve read a series back to back right to the end and there are still more books coming. I’d say its a great what to read after FEVER. Maybe not as “BIG” as Fever, but…. I dunno – it sort of is, at least for me
Jackie: Oh – you are so selling this to me.
Maryse: there are some “holes” every once in awhile, but again, series is not complete yet, so …. it’s not over til it’s over ya know?
Jackie: nothing hits ‘fever’ levels for me but coming close would still be awesome
Maryse: yep exactly and its not a copy or imitation of Fever either… like there are no obvious comparisons other than the “feel” of the series, the “feel” of the romantic tension. Some were worried it wasn’t romance. Its hard to explain to them if they haven’t read Fever that it IS romance, just different. Is there another term for this kind of ongoing romantic/sexual tension in a series, if not “romance”? I know it’s not typical romance but it really IS the biggest part of the series… how she feels for him…
Jackie: but you could say that about Fever. No romance at all in Fever # 1 but you know that it is with all the tension. Just clever writing- not giving you what you want yet
Maryse: EXACTLY!!!! It’s there from the getgo. At first he just gets on her nerves and ticks her off… but sh’es drawn BIG time and it just picks up speed from there.
Jackie: I will buy them now. I need a good series. Love a series I can get lost into when I’m on holiday.
Maryse: this is definitely one to get lost in…

This series is soooooo good!!! You wont regret reading them!!!!!
Once I started reading this series, I could not stop! Dex is yummy, yet so aggravating at the same time. Love him, though!
have had this on my TBR list for a bit but hadnt started since I wasnt sure if they were any good. Thanks for the recs!
Oh yes!! I highly recommend. I’m DYING to get to #3, but I feel bad not reviewing #2 first. Hehe.
But!! I read #2 before even bothering to review #1 and that didn’t hurt anything, right? I should totally read #3 like, RIGHT NOW!!!
hehe
You have me hooked on this series love it. Getting #4 now!!! Thanks again for the amazing reads Maryse!!
so now the question is….should I start reading now…. and then want to scream while having to wait for the final two books to come out…? or do I just wait til Fall when all books should be out and I can read the whole series at once?
LOL!! It’s too late for me, ’cause I gotta go in all the way now, even if I have to wait for the last couple (I heard it will be 8 books). *sigh*
But after this book (#4), after how I felt, and my excitement and anticipation while I read it… totally worth it.
Gah, we’ve just had a long weekend here in Australia and on Maryse’s recommendation, I uploaded all 5.5 books in this series onto my Kindle.I have literally just finished #5 and now gutted, gutted that I have to wait for #6! *Sigh*
What a cliffhanger… !!!
One of the best series in this genre that I have read! Absolutely brilliant!
Thanks Maryse for the recommendation! π
I am so glad you found this one Maryse. I really truly enjoyed all the books. I’m on #4 right now and it STILL has my attention. Also what I like about it, the characters are just your every day people. Perry has self esteem issues (just like most woman) and Dex is always putting up a good front (like most men). Neither one of them is so over the top that you know (always in the back of your mind) that they are fictional characters. It really seems like you are reading her blog and /or diary or something. Love it, love it, love it!!
Anita! What you said!! EVERYTHING. That is exactly why I’ve connected so deeply to this series. They are US!
I just finished Dark House and I am totally hooked! Of course, Red Fox is not available for Nook (even though Red Sky Morning, and Lying Season are). I’m dying to keep reading, but I don’t want to miss anything π
Red Fox is VERY important to the series. Integral characters are introduced, and some great character development (of course!). I’m not sure why she is having a hard time with book #2 for Nook, but if you get really anxious, you can download the Kindle app (free) for your computer or phone and read it that way?
OMG OMG OMG…. These books are sooo good! I read alot and I do mean alot! But I just cant get enough of Dex and Perry! I was sooo *spoiler* I would like to *spoiler*! Anyway.. I just had to share my feeling about these books and cant wait for 5.5 and 6….. WOW
I am on book 4 and I am so glad I started them. I was also on the fence about it, I’m not really into mysteries that much, or horror. I kept hearing the raves about the couple and all the sexual tension, and with the first book free, what did I have to lose (I also grabbed the second one when it was free for a day so I did really good). I don’t know what I will do when I am done with book 5 though…..
Love the bar scene! I laughed outloud more than once.
I started reading the series this weekend, finally. It has been waiting for my on my kindle and I cannot put it down! Loving Perry and Dex. What a great recommendation:)
Heart beating outta my chest ending book #5. Gonna go crazy waiting for October! Great books!!
Firstly, I LOVE your website. Secondly, I read Darkhouse after reading your review, and I absolutely loved it and had to keep reading. Needless to say, after sleepless nights, and daylight hours spent ignoring my children, I finished all of the books in 3 days. You’re killing me. Any possibilities of this becoming a movie?
Absolutely loved this series so far cannot wait for the rest! I have been done for a couple weeks now and miss my daily dose of Dex and Perry! And as for Karina Halle very interested in her next series coming out- Enjoy her writing totally!
I love this book im on number #3 now can’t wait i had dreams with this books of the red fox OMG!!! scarey thing in my dream and werid. π
just downloaded all of the books…. see everyone in a week!!!
I am so glad that I have found your blog. Thanks to you, I have been introduced to the Black Dagger Brotherhood, Cat and Bones, and now Dex and Perry. I absolutely love this series and am counting down the days for #6. Thank you so much for your fabulous orginizational skills and the amazing recommendations!
I love it!! So much enthusiasm for one of my absolute favorite series. Once you get going, you can’t put these down.
Oh Maryse, Oh Maryse…. When am I going to learn? I have read your review on this and thought “oh, that’s not my type of book”. I’m more of a “Black Dagger Brotherhood”, “Dark Hunter” or “Immortals After Dark” kinda girl. But then you sold me on “50 Shades”. Oh, what a ride that was. But I still didn’t listen.
Finally, after running out of things to read, I thought I would give it a try. O.M.G. I am absolutely waiting on pins and needles until Oct 23rd for the next book. I LOVE LOVE LOVE this series. Went through them all in about 6 days. I can’t believe more people are not reading this! (I know, hypocrite, right?) Anyway, shouldn’t we do a party or something in two weeks? LOL
I shall never doubt again π
*grins wickedly*
I hate to say it Tracie…. but I told you so. π
Tee hee!!!
I’m so glad you loved it. That series just *does* that to you. It was just perfect for me. It covered all of my reading needs, and then some. Plus. I LOVE Dex!
I am so ready to read these… But I am petrified of ghost stories. Will I be freaking out?
Thanks for all the wonderful recommendations!!
I am so wanting to read this, but is it scary?? I can’t do scary, especially not ghost scary so I’m on the fence.. Any thoughts?
Thanks for all the great recommendations Maryse!!
Oh man, I didn’t think my first comment worked. Sorry for the duplicates π
Katie, it’s scary, but not Stephen King scary. Way better! Because you can totally relate to the characters (Perry & Dex). Once you start, you won’t be able to stop reading!
Wow… I love the ongoing relationship and sexual frustration in this series. I think I read all these in a matter of days… literally stayed up late, read on my lunch hour (barely got in any food), and read even before work during breakfast. I also just finished the sneak peak chapters on the website. One of my new favorites, I agree much like the tension and build up in the fever series! I will be counting down the days until the release date of the next one later this month!
Discovered this series after a Facebook post from your lovely self when they were free / on sale. Now near end of book 3 and just can’t stop! This series has totally messed up my TBR, even if I try to read other Books I was excited about, I’m just drawn back to the unbelievable sexual tension between dex and perry. Book 3 has been nest of the series so far, more drunken truth and dare!
And they just keep getting better Keighley. I can’t wait to hear how you react to book #4.
Maryse you were so righta bout book 4! Loved it, though I preferred book 3 as I like Perry having Dex all to herself. 1/3 through Book 5 at the moment, finding it hard cos of the ending of Book 4, having some serious withdrawls froma certain someone… I am already dreading finishing this book and not having any more to jump into! Do you know the release date for book 6??
Also I seen your comparison with fever series, I read the first book but couldnt really get into it and felt a bit cheated at the end of book 1, but I am loving the slow burn sexual tension of EIT so I amy give Fever another try.
OMG! I am flying through this series almost done with book 5 and telling myself i need to slow down. I read these 5 books in a little over a week! Book 7 comes out in 2013! I can’t wait for it. I haven’t been this sucked into a series since Twilight. I don’t know what I am going to do when i get to the end!
Did you guys voted yet? For Karina Halle on her book Demon Wings go to GoodReads and vote
Oh and Book 6 is apparently set to come out out 11/15/12! can’t wait i hope its e-reading accesible and we don’t have to wait. totally left hanging from the end of book 5
Help! I have a Nook. I can’t find it for the Nook!!! Do you know how long it takes for them to release that format?
I am addicted, can not wait for the next book to come out. This is one of, the best series I have read. Now all of my friends are wrapped… Keep up the good work
I am having fed perry withdrawals! Can’t seem to start something new any suggestions? I’ve read bdb, midnight breed, fallen angels, imortals after dark, pys changelings etc. I really like the paranormal romance series. Help!
Ugh! Auto correct, Dex withdraws lol
I’m a little late for the party but I’m all caught up! Can’t wait for #7!
Dex is amazing! I can read scary romance but I can’t watch scary movies.
Karina Halle keeps you hanging on to every word!
Thank you Maryse for your blog, my tastes for fiction has expanded thanks to you! You also introduce so many authors that I may never would had known about! Indy authors are so talented.
So will the next EIT book go to paperback first or will it be an ebook right away? I found this series because I was looking for free books and I found the first book. Then I started buying them as fast as I could. Now I have to wait… and it feels like it will be forever until the next one comes out! I fell in love with the series and have recommended it to people already! π
Sigh! After neglecting my husband and children for the past five days I’m dumped back into reality, and it sucks! I chanced reading Darkhouse a few days ago and ‘BAMM!’ I was hooked.I read all the books cover to cover, all 9 of them in 5 days (MAJOR RECORD FOR ME) but now I’m back to day to day life pining for more Dex and Perri and sad that i have to wait! sigh! Thank you again Maryse for all the recommendations you put up. You’re never wrong! π
Maryse it is because of you that I know what I am reading next. I am super picky about my books. I have to research and carefully pick the next one cause I hate getting a dud. That being said I DO NOT like scary stories. I do not like scary movies. I will use my thumbs to plug my ears while my other fingers over my eyes. If I can still hear the music and it is freaking me out I start to hum. Yeah yeah pathetic I KNOW! But after I kept hearing about the Dex guy I had to find out what it was all about!! I not only fell completely in love with Dex I also love the series! She write so smooth. It is extremely well written. I was completely holding my breath or crying or getting pissed off or reaching over to turn my light on cause I didn’t want to read in the dark LOL. I read the whole series in one week!! Now the new one comes out in 5 freakin days!! But no I have a Nook……soooooo yeah. I will be getting it in paperback cause I can’t wait for B&N to get their crap straight! Karina Halle is an amazing author! I will do scary now because of her….well her books anyway. And you my friend are very appreciated! Thank you for all your recommendations and time you put into your blog!
Maryse, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU FOR THIS RECOMMENDATION!! I started the series a few days ago, and am currently busy with On Demon Wings.. getting a bit frustrated because so far Dex isn’t in it but I LOVE this series. I have always loved the paranormal and things that go bump in the night, and paired with the awesome characters, complex love story and each book revealing just that little bit more of the truth, I am totally hooked on this series. So far it’s right up there with my other favorites such as BDB, Twilight, and Vampires in America. I can’t wait to see where the story is heading! Karina is a very talented writer indeed, and she has given me the courage to perhaps write my own novels someday!
Maryse, I love your website, thank you soooo much! Its great to be able to get not only recommended next reads, but other peoples opinions on them. I bought a good portion of this series while it was on sale, and I am on RED FOX. I like the characters, but I don’t find myself as hooked as everyone else for some reason. I will continue to read based on the comments though, guessing I will become more invested as I go.
It’s by book #3 that you’ll be in. π I hope that helps!
I bought Dark House awhile ago but put it aside because I wasn’t sure it was for me. It sounded like it might be too scary but I finally started it…and finished it quickly. I couldn’t put it down. I can’t wait to read all of the series!
Hello Karina
I’ve just finished Darkhouse – excellent – couldn’t put it down. Thank you for writing a fantastic book.

Mandy (England)
