Hrmmm… audiobooks, huh? I’ve always been tempted but never relented. Until now. ‘Cause… lately I’ve been noticing some awesome favorite books on sale that are in “audiobook” format appearing in my Facebook news feed. Lots of our fellow readers are audiobook fans. In fact a few insist on ’em!
I never purchased them (even on sale), ’cause I always assumed I’d drift, ya know? Having control of my own reading experience seemed to be the only way I could properly take in a book. But I’m hearing more and more about how awesome audiobooks are. The convenience (especially for those that can’t sit and read, because they’re doing something, so instead, they listen…). Why not, right? Same story, same length. All the details are there… we’re just not reading it ourselves. Someone is reading it to us. Heck… that sounds awesome!
So with all of these latest Audible audio books on sale, and the free audible trial + 2 free ebooks deal, and the fact that I can spend an entire day cleaning (which means NOT reading…) *gasp!!!* maybe I oughta give these a try. AND! You can find out which of YOUR Kindle books are available as AUDIOBOOKS AT A BARGAIN-PRICE!<—Audiobooks for ebook super-sale prices. I’m thrilled with that, and what’s fun is you can flip flop from reading it, to listening to it without losing your spot… This thing is so cool (Amazon calls it “Matchmaker“)! It’s an Amazon feature, that scans your Kindle books and will list all of the ones you have that are also available as an audiobook at a discounted price (not normal audiobook prices). This way, you can switch back and forth, seamlessly between your ebooks and your audiobooks. VERY COOL! (This is the “Whispersync” thingie and Rebecca reminds us: “check out what audio add ons you can get from your purchased ebooks…”).
Shawn: I’m not sure if you all listen to them but I actually use audible books… let me tell you it makes the experience soooooo much better!
Carrie: I have just started audio books because of the eyestrain
Cheryl: …What’s even better is that it is an audible book, so I can listen while I run!! 😉
Sheri: LOVE LOVE LOVE to listen: housework gets done & road rage is gone!!
Cindy: A thought: I travel a great deal, and joined Audible (www.audible.com). You download “books on tape” and burn to CDs (or MP3 or whatever you like). If you think READING these are fun, try listenting to them in your car! I read fast, and end up skipping things. When you LISTEN to them, you don’t miss anything. Hmmm. Let’s just say it’s fun to HEAR ‘Hallo, Kitten.’ Although I’d suggest hitting the pause button if you’re going through any drive throughs. (sidenote from Maryse: You can listen to ’em on certain Kindles and Kindle apps on your phone and iPad!)
Kim: You give the best reviews and I find that we have VERY similar taste in reading…I also belong to Audible.com and that is the ONLY way I can even begin to keep up with you and your reading suggestions…
Jenn: I play my video games when listening to them lol
Marybeth: I love to listen to audio books while I run. It’s the best!
Christin: Listening is amazing–as a momma of two it allows me to get all my housework (the mindless stuff) done while enjoying a book.
And, speaking of the “voice” reading to us, I’ve been told how sexy Phil Gigante is (especially when he plays Barrons in the Fever series). And Sebastian York is HUGE in our community. In fact, I have a whole Q & A post dedicated to him, here: Q&A with Emma Chase and her TIED audiobook narrator Sebastian York.
BUT!!! I’m a total audiobook “noob” so I wondered how I could read ’em? Er…. I mean… listen to ’em. Did I need an app for that? I found out! Amazon owns Audible, so you can listen to ’em right on your phone and iPad and computer with a Kindle app and of course, certain Kindles too… 😀
Fabi: …when I spent a lot of time one my car I used Audible and had my books narrated to me while I drove. Used earphones if I had family in the car. Audible and Amazon now have a deal where you can automatically pick up in the book with reading/listening without losing your place. It’s awesome how kindle and audible sync with each other. Seamless reading even when traveling. (I also get sick if I read in the car)
Lisa: I listen to mine on the audible app on my phone
Gamu: Yes on my kindle fire i can listen without any app
Linda: There is a separate audible app to listen to them on your phone or tablet but I don’t have a kindle device so I’m not sure about that. There is another really cool feature for audible & kindle though. If you are reading a book on the kindle app and then listen to the same book on audible it will take you to the place you left off so you can switch between listening and reading a book without having to search for where you left off. I loved that since I listened to a book on the way home from work but wanted to read it at home.
Kathy: Also with AMAzon if you own the kindle book some you can buy the audio for a lower price… It’s called kindle matchbook. The kindle will keep your place and you can switch between audio and kindle book. It’s awesome!
What about audiobook recommendations and personal experiences listening to a book?
So I asked our Facebook crew:
Maryse: Audio book fans… what are your favorite audio books? I have never listened to one yet (I once couldn’t fathom not *reading* a book myself) but when I’m doing other stuff, I think I would LOVE for a book to play for me.
Was it weird transitioning from reading to listening? Any mind wandering issues? And when you have the choice, do you choose to read or listen?
And here are what our reader/listener pros said:
Jennifer: The narrater makes the story. If it’s a bad narrater you will not be able to get into the book. I usually don’t like male readers for romance but I love Robert Petkoff reading the Imortals after dark. Try A Hunger Like No Other. By Kresley Cole. Two great Narrators C J Critt and Lorelei King who do the Janet Evanovich books.
Katie: I’ll download an audio book when I have a 5 hour solo road trip to mom’s house
Rebecca: I tend to like audio books of great series I have already read. I am really picky about the narrator. Love the following series: Outlander (Davina Porter), Sookie Stackhouse (Johanna Parker), Immortals After Dark (Robert Petkoff), and Crossfire (Jill Redfield). My favourite narrator of all time is Phil Gigante. He does Karen Marie Moning’s Highlander books. Just to add, audio books are a great way to “refresh” your brain before a new release in a long running series. I always read the book first but like to revisit a series in audio format.
Anie: Listening to books has quickly become one of my obsessions. I’d never listened to one before I listened to my own, but then I was hooked. I can listen while I do chores, drive, or even just lay in bed. They are fantastic.
Linda: Linda: It was weird to start listening to books instead of reading but it made the commute better. If you get books through audible and don’t like them you can return them for a refund or new book. The After series by Anna Todd is good. Also any Donna Grant Books in the Dark King series or The Coldest Girl In Cold Town were really good.
Jean: Listening to series thru audible bad eyes to diabetes…
Jessica: I love audio books! However, I will only listen as a “re-read”. So the books that I’ve read and loved, I seek out in audio form. If I can deal with the voice then I buy.
Nicole: I listen when I go on trips. I recently tried to listen while doing laundry or cleaning house but it didn’t work out to well. I suggest starting out with a podcast and HIGHLY recommend “Serial” on the NPR app. It was amazing. I listened on my way home for Xmas and missed my exit in two major cities because I was so engrossed!
Kim: I haven’t listened to one either. I’m tempted to clean my house while listening to a book I heard that works well.
Emily: Tarryn Fisher books the Love me with Lies series is available in audio now.
Leigh: I have a HUGE audible library!! My favorite by far is the Harry Potter series! I also really love the Cat and Bones books. How a female narrator manages to make Bones sound so sexy is beyond me!
Caren: I wish I had the time to sit and read a book but I just don’t. I have an acct at Audible.com then I get free books from overdrive library and hoopla. I listen to most of the books listed on your site. I even look up the new releases at you page them go find them on audio.
Becky: Down load audible it’s 15.00 a month you get 1 free every month and it’s great… It’s the best option when your not able to read.
Ramy: The Evanovich series about Stephanie Plum is pretty entertaining. The reader does a great job and they are very funny. It’s great to listen to because I would probably never read the books.
Sharon: Harry Potter Series . The guy who read the books on CD was GREAT
Penelope: Bad Romeo by Leisa Rayven was awesome in audio! As was Beautiful Player by Christina Lauren.
Carissa: The Outlander audio books are great! I choose to read but if I really into a book and having trouble getting stuff done an audio book helps me get off my butt.
Lauren: Oh I forgot those on my list! I love the cat and bones ones too!
Kelli: Shatter Me series by Tahereh Mafi!!
Nancy: I’m currently still obsessed with S.C. Stephen’s “Reckless” I was sooooo excited when it came out I stayed up all night after working full nursing shift and read it all before my next shift. I also downloaded it to my Audible account and have listened to it while working out. Does my heart good to see/hear Keira and Kellan finally quit punishing each other and focus on their growth and love. I can’t help but love angst
Caroline: I have a decent commute to work and listen every day. Love the narrator for the J.D. Robb series. Also love the Sherrilyn Kenyon audio books and Karen Marie Moning audios. Lisa Gardner or John Grisham also good. I find if I don’t like the narrator I can’t finish the book.
Lori: I hate audiobooks but You by Caroline Kepnes has this insanely amazing nararrator that I adored.
Vernalee: Harry Potter Series! It will blow your mind!!
Jennifer: Also the Jane Yellowrock series by Faith Hunter is great
Jen: Love Ella Frank’s Audio books!
Lisa: The Outlander series. She does an awesome job with changing her voice for different characters. It’s the only one I can listen to
Traci: I listen in my car all the time. Cut & Run Series is excellent on audio, Rock Chicks, Eleanor & Park is the best audio I’ve ever listened to. Fever Series is also great on audio
Erin: Eleanor & Park hands down the best audio book. The narrators were perfection!
bev: Maryse, I saw on your fb update that you are interested in audio. I have not really listened to any, but did listen to a David Sedaris and really enjoyed it. On another site one of the contributors said she had a hard time with fiction but found out that non fiction worked for her. Especially humorous like Tina Fey, Mindy Kaling, etc. I have a feeling this is how I would be. I love listening to podcast when cooking, cleaning, on walks. I have heard that Laura Kinsale has a narrator that people love. I’ve heard a sample that came with Flowers and he has a very nice voice and seemed to put the right inflections. Ok long post for some one who doesn’t listen, lol. But one of my challenge tasks and have been thinking of the Mindy Kaling or Amy Poehler book.
Elizabeth: Beautiful Disaster I just finished listening to the Audible book…it was my third time though and I still am in love with Travis.
Alyssa: I love Eragon on audio.
Alison: i listen to them everyday on the drive to work. not so sure about two narrators though. it throws me off.
Lauren: I listen to about 2-3 per week at work. It’s fab! Molly Harper, Kresley Cole, Anne Stuart and Karen Marie Moning have the BEST narrators in my opinion
Angie: Karen Marie Moning’s Highlander series is one of my favorites. The narrator, Phil Gigante, is perfection.
Ali: Anything by Jeniene Frost is great on audio. *sigh*
Krystal: I love audio books, I borrow them from my local library on my cell. I listening mostly at work and in the car. At home it’s mostly just books and my nook. Twilight, dark-hunter series and The Anita Blake books are my favorites
Jessica: 2 of my Fav narrators are Kate Rudd & Grace Grant.
Moxie: Fifty on Audible.com. =) My commute to work will never be the same!!
Erin: Nancy Straight’s Touched Series (paranormal) and her lasted release His Frozen Heart are my FAV to listen to!! I had a hard time listening to audio books b/c most sound ridiculous when they try and be sexy or sound like a child and my mind would wonder a bit b/c I wasn’t into it…but Nancy’s narrators are perfect!
Carrie: That’s all I do… Is audio
Author Sadie Grubor: I like Audio Books for when I’m cleaning house, driving, traveling, etc. One of my favorite narrators is Robert Petkoff – He gives good accent. Love Hollie Jackson’s narratrix voice. Now, my books are not by any means the ‘standard’ to judge if you Now, my books are not by any means the ‘standard’ to judge if you will enjoy all audiobooks. BUT… I can send you a code to download one of my books for free…just so you can try out the feel of listening. (No I’m NOT asking for anything in return….SWEAR!) Just message me and I can send you a download code.
Michelle: I can’t listen to them at all. To me reading a book means that I can envelope myself into a story and I just can’t do that if I’m concentrating on another task. It takes all the enjoyment out of it.
Teresa: The Black Dagger Brotherhood series on audio books are amazing. I also like the Gone Girl, Fifty Shades of Grey series, Deeper by Robin York and her second book Harder. Abbi Glines audio books are great too. Some of these narrators are swoon worthy.
Lisa S: I have a few. The voice of the narrator is a deal breaker. I enjoyed #GIRLBOSS, Jane’s Melody, Fifty Shades of Jungle Fever. I tend to listen at work or on a commute or at home instead of listening to music. I recommend listening to the sample first.
Stephanie: Fever series but only once Phil Gigante starts narrating.
Jenn: Doctor Who books read by David tennant are to die for. His voice is so dreamy. They aren’t romance books but still they got me onto audiobooks. Also good the Vampire Academy books by Richelle mead. Well the spin off series with the alchemist girl Sydney and the vampire Adrian. They are good and the narrator is also pretty decent. I play my video games when listening to them lol
Christin: On Dublin Street and Sweet Filthy Boy (any book with a character who speaks with an accent) took on a whole new meaning for me after the audiobook–I couldn’t capture the accent in my head. Listening is amazing–as a momma of two it allows me to get all my housework (the mindless stuff) done while enjoying a book.
Erica: Any Kristen Ashley (Rock Chick)
Mary: I love listening to audiobooks while I knit. My favorite is The Counterfeit Heiress by Tasha Alexander. The actress, Bianca Amato was amazing!
Chris: Bdb, Outlander
Tonya: The Legend series, the Outlander books, the Help, and the Werewolf series by Molly Harper are all amazing!!!
Shannon: Love Molly Harper’s Hollows series read by Amanda Ronconi. Fantastic
Penelope: I love audio books, kindle and physical books. For audio books the narrator can make the book awesome. I agree that Amanda Ronconi (who narrates for Molly Harper and a few others) is amazing.
Avery: I was just wondering this as well. I have an audible credit I need to use and the only books I’ve ever listened to were kids novels lol
Janet: Just finished The Rosie Effect – fricken hysterical narrator doing Don Tillman.
Author K Webster: The only one I ever listened to was Remy by Katy Evans. It was good when he was talking/thinking but when he did Brooke’s voice, it would get high pitched and I would cringe lol. I’ll stick to reading them and just listen to music when I’m doing other stuff. Ha!
Kate: Outlander is my absolute favorite on Audio. (Of course, Outlander is my favorite everything) I think the biggest challenge is finding a narrator you like. The woman who does the Mercy Thompson series is great. She also reads the Stephanie Plum books and is super funny. Iced by KMM was great. Cat and Bones? Not good audio. The Harry Potter series on audio is also amazing.
Miranda: I listen to a ton anything with Sebastian Cole, Four Seconds to Lose by K.A. Tucker is my favorite.
Penelope: I love audio books, kindle and physical books. For audio books the narrator can make the book awesome. I agree that Amanda Ronconi (who narrates for Molly Harper and a few others) is amazing.
Monica: Maybe Someday. I’m listening to the audible version! “Sounds” great!
Lori: Maybe Someday was awesome. Ridge is THE BEST.
Tina: I am listening to the Nightwalkers series from audible. It is awesome. The reader has great male voices and the stories are hot!
Kelli: I dearly love Neil Gaiman. He reads his own. Neverwhere , The Ocean at the End of the Lane, the Graveyard Book
Mandy: The Corps Security books on audio are amazing…even though I’ve read them all I still enjoy listening. I’m on Cooper and I can’t wait for Locke he’s my favorite!!
Cindy: My favorite series is Black Dagger Brotherhood great on audio I actually listen to all my books now.
Kathy: I loved Neanderthal Seeks Human by Penny Reid! The narrator was awesome and the book hilarious! Definitely listen to a sample before you buy to make sure that you like the narrator. Also with AMAzon if you own the kindle book some you can buy the audio for a lower price… It’s called kindle matchbook. The kindle will keep your place and you can switch between audio and kindle book. It’s awesome!
Denise: Very weird, for some reason I like regency books read in a British accent
Sheree: Undeniable Series by Madeline Sheehan
JoAnne: I get all the latest audible books from the library. It’s perfect to listen to a book while you do housework, cook or run errands. I don’t usually listen to romances, though, because hearing someone read sex scenes makes me feel uncomfortable, so I’ve been listening to thrillers like Preston and Child’s Blue Labyrinth, which was excellent!
Gamu: Fever Series by Karen Marie Moning. And the iron druid chronicles by Kevin Herne. And anything read by phil gigante or michael kramer and kate reading. My fav narrators. And i know there isnt any offical “harry potter “audios but i love the series read by stephen fry. I just love audiobooks. Now i buy physical books just to see them. I listen to them all.
Anajanette: Georgia Cates Beauty from Pain series I think is really good.
Diane: The Bridget Jones books are the only ones I’ve ever listened to but I loved them
LATEST ADD-ON AUDIOBOOK RECOMMENDATIONS (09-14-2015)
- Easy by Tammara Webber <— Trisha recommends these! “Easy by Tammera Weber AND In the Company of Killers Series by JA Redmerski are highly recommend as well. I have A 5am job, that allows for a few hours of audio each time I work that shift.”
- Killing Sarai: A Novel (In the Company of Killers) by J.A. Redmerski <— and here’s the other one Trisha loves! and Rebecca agrees with this one! “Someone just mentioned In The a Company Of Killers, which are cheap on WhisperSync if you own the ebook, and fantastic narration.”
- Beautiful Bastard by Christina Lauren <— Amy says: “Beautiful Bastard, Beautiful Stranger, etc… by Christina Lauren. All of them have GREAT narrators.”
- Throne of Glass: A Throne of Glass Novel by Sarah J. Maas <— Melanie loves these and says: “The entire series is available on audible” and Alexandria agrees: “Definitely agree with the Throne of Glass recommendation!”
- Magic Bites: Kate Daniels, Book 1 by Ilona Andrews <— And Melanie recommends these! “Also another great series on audiobook”
- Skinwalker: Jane Yellowrock, Book 1 by Faith Hunter <— Denise LOVES this series like crazy, and highly recommends it in audio!! “My all-time favorite series in the urban fantasy genre is…The Jane Yellowrock series by Faith Hunter. This series is a must. The first book is Skinwalker. It can be dark at times, but Jane/Beast can get into funny situations. The story is about a 6ft tall Cherokee women who can change into a mountain lion named Beast and when Jane is Beast, Beast talks in her head. It’s like 2 separate entities who share one body. Jane rides a Harley made from 2 different bikes that she has named “Bitsa”. Oh…and Jane is a leather wearing, gun, knife, and stake toting rogue vampire (Mithrin) hunter, (Beast has her killing claws and killing teeth and at times the comic relief). The books are set in (an alternate world) New Orleans where vamps have been “out of the coffin”, so to speak, for quite a while.
This series is also on Audible and Whispersync on Amazon. For those who don’t know what Whispersync is, you buy the Kindle book for whatever price is listed, and you can get the audio at a discount. I bought Skinwalker and got the audio from Audible… The narrator for the series is the awesome Khristine Hvam. In book one she seems to me like she is trying to find the best voice for Beast, but by book 2 she has it. Her switch from voice to voice, character to character seems effortless. I get the most out of books if I read along as I listen. Try it out, and check put Faith Hunter’s books. She is the best!” - Forty Shades of Pearl: Pearl Trilogy Series, Book 1 by Arianne Richmonde <— Lisa likes this one! “Shades of Pearl by Arianne Richmonde audiobook is really good.”
- Abducted: Lizzy Gardner, Book 1 by T. R. Ragan <— Julie recommends this one! “Rudd is one of my favorite ladies to listen to on audio books. She does the T.R. Ragan Lizzie Gardner series. Murder mysteries.(some romance too)”
- The Consequence of Loving Colton by Rachel Van Dyken <— And Julie recommends this one, too! “I loved the Rachel Van Dyken Consequences series. Hilarious romance stories.”
- A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas <— Rebecca loves this one! “A Court Of Thorns And Roses by Sarah J Maas, who also wrote Throne Of Glass (my favourite audio narrator, this is my favourite lately, sexy adult fantasy romance, a retelling of Beauty and the beast with sexy ass dark fairies).”
- Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard <— Rebecca recommends this! “Red Queen recently blew my mind, amazing narration (YA dystopian fantasy).”
WOW you guys! I had NO idea how many of you are audiobook readers. Er… listeners. 😉 LOL!!! I LOVE THIS LIST! Thank you so much! So much fun to be had, even when I can’t sit with an actual book…
I’ve listened to the edible series by Ellla Frank which was really good and I like listening to Jasinda Wilder’s books. Pipper Goodeve and Gabrielle Vaughn are awesome together. My favorite audio to date though has been The Witness by Nora Roberts though, holy crap it was so good :).
If you try one I hope you do a review of the experience.
I love audio books, I started with books on tape from the Libary, then moved to books on CD, now I have them on my phone and I can use my blue tooth headphones. Folding clothes, washing dishes was never so much fun. I always listen to a sample first some narrators really make the book, others can totally wreck the mood.
Love this post Maryse! I’ve never tried audio either but have been wanting to!
I will bev! Everyone seems to love the Eleanor book in audio like CRAZY so I think that will be my first. 😀
Jean, we should buddy-listen one. LOL!!!
Shenita – thank you for those. I’ll add ’em in!
Catherine, I’ll be listening during house cleaning too… perfect way to make it go fast. Time flies when you’re having fun! 😉
I have a 45 minute commute to and from work every day. That’s an hour and a half each day, seven and a half hours each week, that could be spent reading! But since reading while driving is generally frowned upon, I recently tried the audio book experience. I love it! Not as much as actually reading, but listening is good too. I do like to take a little sample listen before I buy it just to make sure I like the narrator. Try it, you might like it.
I am a huge audio fan-I’m really addicted to it. It’s made multitasking so much more enjoyable. I’m also an audible member. I tend to choose more quality books to listen to on audio since I always seem to find time for the lighter stuff-lol.
I really feel that books by British authors that take place in Great Britain feel so much more authentic when listened to. Two books that come to mind are Life After Life and code Name verity-both excellent. And of course, as previously mentioned, the outlander series is outstanding.
One of my favorite audio books is Attachments by Rainbow Rowell. The book is partially written in email format and I loved the audio version.
One series that I picked up pretty inexpensively was the Peaches Monroe. That narrator really makes the books-not sure I would have enjoyed it nearly as much if I had just read them.
I loved Shannon Hale’s Austenland on audio. The way they did the British accents really adds to the funniness and the sex-appeal of the characters.
I’ve listened to audio books for several years now. I have quite a commute to work so it helps pass the time. I also like to listen when I’m sewing or quilting. My favorites have been fifty shades of grey ( I’ve lstened to them twice as well as read the books) and the billionaires obsession series by j.s. Scott is really good ( the narrator does an awesome job). Also I love all the mystery romances by Kendra elliot and tiffany snow. I’ve also listened to the cut and run series and it was so good I would listen on my lunch hour at work. My husband and I have a week long trip planned in March and although he doesn’t know it yet but he’ll be listening to fifty shades on that trip. Lol
I got into listening to Audio books when a book I wanted to read through the library was ONLY available as an audio book. Eleanor and Park. I don’t read a lot of anything except Romance so I’m not sure if I would have been able to get through it had it not been audio. If it’s a book I want to read but may not like it I try to find the audio version. Many libraries have a lot of audio book options through Overdrive or Hoopla and I’m obsessed! Love the KA Tucker books, Christina Lauren, J. Lynn and Kylie Scott series are all great to listen to. Thanks for sharing all the recs!!!
Maryse I would love to buddy-listen Eleanor and Park with you. (I’m a little scared lol)! Won’t be able to start till Saturday though…. but seems like it would be perfect while I clean or shred that huge pile of paperwork I’ve been putting off!!
I haven’t listened to E&P on audio, but I love the book. I just finished re-reading Mud Vein on audio and it was FANTASTIC…the narrator WAS Senna and it made me love the book even more. I’m re-reading The Opportunist now. I don’t typically re-read books on audio (I’d rather read something new) but for some of my favorites it has been really fun. I listen while working out, cleaning, making dinner and driving. Narrators can make or break a book, but I’ll say that many times you get used to the narrator as you continue to listen so don’t give up too soon. Enjoy!
I’m so excited about E&P. Just one little plea, Maryse & Jean? If the audio is not working for you, please (see pleading) try reading it. If it had not been a library book I probably would of highlighted over half of it. Seriously, the writing is wonderful.
Ah bev you have me squirrelly about it now…. Maybe I should save that one to read like a “real” book. I wouldn’t want to be disappointed due to the audio.
Bev, I agree! It’s one of my favorite books. I don’t want the experience to be negatively altered for you in any way, although I heard the audio was good.
You have my favorite series, Outlander, shown above. I’ve also enjoyed the Troubleshooters series by Suzanne Brockmann on audio — Patrick Lawlor does the guys really good. The Tangled series by Emma Chase (at least the ones written from the guy POV) were pretty good in audio. Psy-Changeling is good in audio as well.
I cannot *not* comment on this one. I’m a addicted to audiobooks! I mean, I have a library of 120 titles, and I started the collection only a couple of years ago…
From what other readers have told you:
Phil Gigante is awesome in the Fever series. In Highlander, especially in the first books, he lacks consistency doing the voices across books, but he’s still good.
Psy-Changeling is fantastic in audio. The reader, female, makes all the right voices. When I say that, I mean you always know who’s talking. Through all 13 books, all 13 couples (and secondary cast) have a distinctive voice, tone, cadence. It’s perfect!
My favorite voice actor has to be James Marsters, though. Yes, Spike from Buffy. That James Marsters. He’s read The Dresden Files, which is Urban Fantasy instead of romance, but he’s done a few other things too and he’s *gooooood* 🙂
Best luck! Hope you’ll enjoy your first audio
Jean, it is worth getting squirrelly for. I’m not sure why it took me so long to read, besides the long library line. I just fell hard for it. Have not heard the audio and it may be awesome, sounds like it.
Sadie, read it at the beginning of last month and already know it will be one of my favorite reads of this year. Had to jump right in to Attachments afterwards, I’m not sure I could of went to another author as my mind was still on E&P.
Oh, and Nicholas Boulton is the narrator of Laura Kinsale’s Flowers from the Storm. I’m so tempted to try and listen to this just to see how he does with Christian trough out the book. Christian has a very different and distinct pov. *sigh* ~this book.
Love this topic! I have listened to audio books for a while now and Outlander is by far my favorite. The narrator is splendid!! I think I have listened to it a half dozen times now. I don’t know about everyone else but I can check out audio books from my library on-line (free) and they play on my iphone.
Sometimes, at night, if I cannot focus on my Kindle, audio is a great option :-))))
Bev, Eleanor and Park is my favorite book by her, but you should check out Landline too. It was very good! I’ve also read Fangirl and Attachments. Her characters are so quirky and real. I understand the hangover resulting from E&P… I’m on my library/overdrive waiting list for the audio version to re-read.
Hi Maryse – I am an audiobook nut, I have over 1000! I just wanted to suggest an awesome app called Hoopla Digital (app available through iTunes and Android too I think), in conjunction with your library (unfortunately not all libraries offer it). It gives you instant access to an Awesome selection of audiobook titles with no waiting! I am currently listening to Archer’s Voice by Mia Sheridan through this app – free! Check it out!
I LOVE audiobooks too! The narrator makes or breaks it. All the Rock Chick books are awesome in audio format. I also really like the Chicago Stars series by Susan Elizabeth Phillips. They are narrated by Anna Fields who really does a great job. Natural Born Charmer is especially funny. I got many strange looks thrown my way when I burst out laughing like a crazy lady on the subway :). I’m listening to the Lunar Chronicles right now and really enjoying them.
Traci, I just signed up for hoopla digital and found a bunch of audios on my tbr my library doesn’t have. YAY!!!!
Don’t forget to see how your local library operates with audio books too! That way you can virtually borrow audiobooks, for times when you don’t wish to buy that audiobook.
I have found audio books help me work out, clean house and help with long trips. I have found myself wanting to workout and clean because I will not let myself listen unless I am doing one or the other unless I am in the car driving and can’t read. My favorite authours have been John Grishams and Nora Roberts and my favorite books have been The Divergent Series, Accidentally on Purpose and Up in Flames. Love Audio books but I still love to read as well.
Agreed, I have listened to audio books for years now, allows me to escape the normal world when I need to whether it’s the home life, work life or driving. I find myself less frustrated on drives when I can listen. Unfortunately there are many books from this site that are not available….took forever for audible to get mia Sheridan’s “archer’s voice” which might be my all time favourite.
Kindle has this great new feature that searches for the audio updates for the e-books you already own! Searches your library and tells you which ones have audible upgrades available!
Thank you be!!! This is awesome news. I love the idea of being able to read a book, and switch to audiobook version right from where I left off, and back again. GENIUS!
The first book I listened to was The Girl On The Train and I loved it. The accent made it so much better. I quickly realized I could get other stuff done but still read and that excited me. I have ADHD like crazy so I thought I’d never be able to focus on the book but I actually can. The only thing I can’t do is read something while listening, not even 10 word text messages lol. I was wondering though if anyone else struggles with male narrators, specifically during steamier scenes. Every time all I can hear is Laverne Cox from Orange Is The New Black’s voice lol. I have so many books on my kindle but I just don’t have time to physically read them. And I’ve recently discovered Overdrive through libraries so free audiobooks is even better since they are more expensive than kindle/paperback.
I absolutely love audio books. I travel… A lot, 6 hours one way every week and I love how the time flies when engrossed in an audio book. The only drawback, I find, is that while new releases are available on e readers and paperback, it can take months or even years for the same book to appear in audio
